Mostar - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The heart of Herzegovina Mostar is

definitely a place not to be missed. Theoriental old town, the old bridge, mosquesand churches, and the turquoise blueNeretva River will mesmerize you.

    Sarajevo Old Town

Its amazing how quickly visitors feelat home and begin to think of ways toprolong their stay. To venture into theBaarija (old town) is to walk through theancient Ottoman past. Shopping, drinking

Turkish coffee, or just strolling through thecraftsmens quarters is a pure delight.

    Bjelanica Mountain

The highland villages on this range offeran authentic peek into old-world Europe.Traditions dating back hundreds of yearscan still be found as part of daily life here. The highlanders are extremely friendlyand usually make foreign guests rethinkthe true meaning definition of hospitality.Hiking and walking here is some of the

    best in the country.

    Kravica Waterall

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country ofmountains and water. Kravica is a remarkable

waterfall on the Trebiat River. Its a greatspot for a picnic and a swim and is only a shorthop from Meugorje, Ljubuki, and apljina. Ifthats not enough, you can go on a canoe safarion the Trebiat just a few clicks down the road.

    Jahorina

For Olympic-style skiing at truly low prices, nothing beats Jahorina. The lifts are old andsome of the hotels are from socialist timesbut the new infrastructure and well-groomedslopes with no queues represent one of

the best (and least publicized) bargains inEuropean skiing.

    Lukomir

The mediaeval highland village of Lukomir is thehighest (1,469m) and most isolated permanent

settlement in the country. Here is a last chancepeek at old-world Europe and the way thingsused to be. Its an amazingly beautiful sight, high on the ridge of Rakitnica Canyonliketraveling to a place time has forgotten.

    Sutjeska National Park

Slightly off the beaten track, Sutjeska is hometo the last primeval forest in Europe. Here you

will find a true wilderness adventure withbears, wolves and other wild things in thisnatural wonderland.

    Meugorje

A quarter of a century ago, six teenagers

walking in the hills surrounding the village ofMeugorje had an apparition of the MotherMary. Despite skepticism from official circles, the visions continued. Meugorje has grownto be the second-largest Catholic pilgrimagesite in the world. Millions of the faithful,

curious, and even skeptics have visitedMeugorje. Believer or not, this holy site issomething to experience.

    Blagaj

This is one of the best examples of the wayHerzegovinas cultural and natural heritageis interwoven. On a mountaintop in Blagaj

are the ruins of an ancient Illyrian fort. TheRomans added to the original structure, andby the Middle Ages it had become the castle ofthe ruling noble family. The Ottomans addedyet more to the large fort, and the ruins standwitness to four civilizations that have madeHerzegovina their home. The tekija dervishhouse at the base of a 200-meter rock face

at the source of the Buna River is a magicalplace. Try the fresh trout at Norfish too itsthe best around.

    Una River rating

The Krajina locals treat the Una River like amember of the family. It is the best cared-for river in the country, and many of theregional traditions revolve around (and on)this gorgeous river. Rafting and kayaking on

the Una is an unforgettable experience, andif you manage to conquer the falls at StrbakiBuk, youve conquered some of the toughestin Europe! The Neretva and Tara are just asthrilling but Strbakis 24-meter waterfallis tops!

    Here are the must-see

Walking and HikingWalking and TrekkingHundreds o kilometers o unspoilt trails

    Trekking

We can advise you on the right clothingand outdoor equipment needed for ourchangeable climates.

    Summer brings hot central European

temperatures in Bosnia, and an evenhotter Mediterranean climate inHerzegovina. Sturdy boots are a must, asmany of the trails are not well-maintainedand loose rocks or roots could mean anankle injury.

Spring and autumn bring vibrate colors tothe natural flora but with it more rain, sogood waterproof gear is recommended.

Winter hiking is also an amazing

experience in BiH. You can avoid thestrenuous snow hiking in some partsof Herzegovina but be prepared forone-meter plus snow falls above the1,000-meter mark during the coldestmonths.

The Dinaric Alps extend right through the heart of the country.Bosnia is a mountainous land and although the wilderness areas

arent heavily populated, there are several eco-tourism operatorswho offer professionally guided hiking. The advantage of hikingin BiH is the existence of truly untouched wilderness and the widearray of treks available, from leisure walks in the hills to extremelychallenging climbs for the hard-core mountaineers.

    Bosnia and Herzegovina

    inherited hundreds of

    kilometers of hiking and

    walking trails from the former

Yugoslavia. This traditionalnetwork of trails, dating back

    to Austro-Hungarian times,

    has created a magnificent

    grid of high quality hiking

    and walking routes.

    The Dinaric Alps

Dinaric Alps extend from the northwestfrontiers near the Una River all the wayto the Montenegrin border at SutjeskaNational Park. This mountainous terrainis one of Europes truly untouchedwilderness regions, offering an arrayof treks and walks throughout thecountry. Hill walking is most popular in

the northwest, whereas the heart of theDinarics is a compact configuration ofthe countrys most stunning peaks, withover a dozen 2,000m + summits. Beingthe natural borderline between theMediterranean and Alpine climate zones,BiH offers more diverse landscapes thanmost mountainous countries 10 times

    its size.

    Sutjeska National Park

Is one of Bosnia and Herzegovinas

oldest parks, with 17,500 hectares ofmagnificent wilderness. Hidden belowBosnia and Herzegovinas highest peek,Maglic Mountain, is Perucica primevalforest. Beech trees tower over 180 feethigh and black pines sprout from therocky faces that protect the ancientforest. A hike through the heart of thesewoodlands is an unforgettable and awe-

inspiring experience. The park offersthe best hiking in the country with awide range of walks and treks for bothbeginner and pro. Sutjeska is also home

to a large population of European brownbears as well as wolves, deer, eagles andchamois found on Zelengora Mountain.

Prenj, Cvrsnicaand Cabulja MountainsAre sometimes called the HerzegovinaHimalayas. Starting on the northern

edge of the Mostar county line, thisrange sprawls north all the way to Konjic. This area is well known for its numerouswildflowers only found in this region ofthe world. Cvrsnica Mountain is the mostaccessible of the three mountains forhiking, with many excellent trails startingin the valley of Diva Grabovica. Just northof Mostar is the Cabulja Mountain Range

and Dreznica Valley, with an 11-mileroad winding through 12 breathtakingcanyons. The Drezanka River carves thedeep valley between Cvrsnica and Cabuljamountains and is an ideal spot for hiking, swimming and fishing.

    Kozara National Parkand Krajina Hillwalking.

The Park is situated in the nor thwestKrajina region of Bosnia between therivers Una, Sava, Sana and Vrbas. Its soft

rolling hills and thick conifer forests area great getaway for an invigorating dayin nature. Certain parts of the park aredesignated for walking, hiking, biking, picnics, and herb and flower picking. Theother region is closed off for hunting.Hill walking is a popular activity withinthe park, offering superb opportunitiesfor day trips with families or just to get

out into nature for the day. Hiking toLisina, the highest point of the park at938 meters, offers a panoramic viewof this part of the Krajina. There are

several other well-trekked areas inthe northwest, namely Osjecenica andPljesevica near Biha, with well-markedtrails and spectacular views.

    The Una-Sana National Park

The youngest of National Parks in BiH,Una-Sana is named after the two r iversthat flow through it. Known for its crystal

blue waters, deep limestone canyons, and the fertile valleys fed by her waters, the 207-km long Una stretches fromthe Croatian Krajina to the Sava river atJasenovac. The legend behind the ri versname goes back to Roman times whena legionnaire had his first gl ance at thesparkling waters and uttered Una, solo

una (the only one), suggesting he had

never seen anything like it before.Today day the park offers both a tranquilsanctuary for its numerous fish and birdspecies as well as adrenalin-fuelledwhitewater rafting on the Unas rapids.

And if this is not enough, the manystunning spots to hike, walk, bike or fishwill surely have you agreeing with ourlegendary legionnaire

    Bjelasnica Mountain

Was home to the 1984 Winter Olympics, and is now proposed as a National Park. While the Park is only in the planningstages, this area still offers some of

the most varied mountain tourism inthe country. Bjelasnica and Igman areboth Olympic ski centers. The highland

villages on this range offer a true glimpseof old Europe. Traditions and customsdating back centuries can still be foundas part of daily life here. The highlandersare extremely friendly and enjoy sharing

their unique lifestyle with foreign guests.Hiking from village to village through thehighland landscapes is nothing short of amystical journey.

best trails to yourself! Mountain biking is

offered on Bjelanica, Igman and Visoicamountains and also in the beautifuland wild northwest. For road biking thenarrow roads are not ideal, but placeslike Livno, Kupres, and Glamoki Fields inwestern Bosnia have magnificent terrainfor long valley biking with relatively

    little traffic.

Youd have to be a pretty poor fishermannot to hook at least a few freshwater fishin Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our riversand lakes are teeming with trout, carp, bass and many other species; and good

fishing can be found in most parts of thecountry. You can find some fishing shopsbut serious gear is hard to come by, soits best to bring your own kit if youreplanning a solo trip. However, organizedfishing groups will more than likelyprovide the poles and gear for you.

Some of the best fishing rivers are thePliva near Sipovo and Jajce, the UpperDrina, and the Neretva River. These rivershave a well-deserved reputation as someof Europes best for fly fishing. All are

easily accessible from excellent pavedroads. The waters offer plenty of large
