INTRODUCING PARASITES

• A parasite is an plant or animal organism that lives in another organism and takes its nourishment from that organism for the purpose of staying alive.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms vary from person to person.• Diarrhea• Abdominal pain• Bloating• Vomiting• Weight loss• Fever• Dehydration

WHERE IS IT HAPPENING?

• Giardia is found within every region of the United States and is found worldwide.

• It is found in soil, food, and water.• The prevalence rate for the disease range from 2-7% in

developed countries and 20-30% in most developing countries.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

• Swallowing contaminated water while swimming in swimming pools, lakes, rivers, oceans, ponds, and water parks.

• Also, if you eat uncooked or raw foods, you can be infected.• And accidentally picking up contaminated diapers, bathroom

fixtures or toys.

WHO IS MOST AT RISK?

• Day care providers and children attending day care centers• Travelers, Hikers, Campers• Young children, older adults and persons with weakened

immune systems

TREATMENTS

In most cases, people who have healthy immune systems will recover without treatment.

• Drinking plenty of fluids • Take medicine• Rest in bed

PREVENTIONS

• Not drinking contaminated water or untreated water. Boil the water for at least one minute.

• Wash your hands after you use the bathroom before handling food or drinks

• Don’t make human body contact if you didn’t wash your hands.• When traveling in areas where diseases are common to happen, use

only bottled water. • Avoid swallowing water in swimming pools and spas.

WHAT WATER COMPANIES DO TO REMOVE THE PARASITES FROM THE WATER?

The water company use disinfection process.

• Chlorination or Iodine • Ultraviolet light • Filtration.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO PREVENT THE WATER POLLUTION?

• Dispose the trash properly• Pull weeds by hands instead of using weed killers• Do not dump poisonous chemicals into the toilet, sink, the ocean, lakes, or rivers.• Do not dump sewage into a lake and streams.• Pick up your pet waste.• Collect waste and trash from local lakes and water streams.• Don’t defecate near waterways or in puddles. If you have to defecate in the bush,

make sure you bury it.
