BRANCH RECORDS ARCHIVED

All Call for Branch Records

Last year we were able to gather over eight crates of records of our branch's past and donate them to the MO Historical Society. They had been stored with various former officers and were not always in places where they could be readily accessed or preserved. Our records are now catalogued and stored at the archive center in Columbia, MO. They are available to us on request at any time. Susan Fenwick, branch archivist, and the co-presidents have the list of records on file. Past officers and committee heads may be storing records that could be archived. If you have some records, please contact Susan so she can arrange to have them transferred to the Historical Society. Examples of the kinds of materials we seek include scrapbooks, presentations for special events or celebrations, awards or award applications, and educational materials developed in support of the AAUW mission. Is there a box in your basement? Open up that space and help your branch to preserve the records of its past.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND

Over the past century AAUW has provided over $100 million to more than 12,000 women and projects serving women and girls from 140 countries. For the year 2015–16, AAUW has awarded a total of $3.7 million in funding for individual women and community projects serving women and girls. This extraordinary work has been done through the dedication of AAUW members. We as Ballwin-Chesterfield have donated consistently to this great work. As members of AAUW MO, we are trying to complete a grant started many years ago. Grant money can only be used when the entire grant is completed. At our November Branch meeting, you will be encouraged to designate your Individual Giving contribution to the F. Elaine Richardson Fund. This fund needs about $4,000 to be completed and with our help we will get close to the goal.

At our November meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet Rachel Reid, American Fellowship awardee who is studying at Washington University. Come and see how your help supports this important work.

Local scholarship awardees are doing well. Your constant support of Dollars for Scholars assists many women to complete their undergraduate education. Be sure to buy your Panera Cards, contribute books for our book sale, and have a good time attending the other Dollars’ events. These women are counting on you.

Help to Honor Maya Angelou in the Hall of Famous Missourians

Maya Angelou was born and spent much of her childhood in St. Louis. Many know her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), which brought her international recognition and acclaim. Over her long life, she became one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time. With over 50 honorary doctorate degrees, Angelou became a celebrated poet, memoirist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist (mayaangelou.com). For more information, you may contact Shirley Breeze ([email protected]).

Last year our efforts helped to install a bust of Virginia Minor in the Hall of Famous Missourians in the State Capitol. Now we have an opportunity to elevate another famous Missouri woman--Maya Angelou. She would be only the ninth woman in the Hall. If you would like to be a part of this effort, email Speaker of the House, Todd Richardson, ([email protected]). When you request that Maya Angelou be considered for the Hall of Fame, include a short statement about what special attributes make her worthy of the honor.

is individual giving month for the EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FUND.
