AAUW MO AWARDED A $1000 IMPACT GRANT

FOR 2016–2017

AAUW’s Impact Grants are awarded to selected state organizations in support of their grassroots efforts around member-driven AAUW public policy priorities. The 2016-2017 Impact Grants were given for proposals focusing on voter education and the campaign for equal pay. Impact Grant funds are intended to provide grantees with resources to pursue efforts that would otherwise be challenging to accomplish.

Here are the four goals for the Missouri AAUW Impact Grant:

Goal One–Require each MO branch to complete one Get Out the Vote activity. Goal Two–Require each MO branch to complete one gender pay gap activity. Goal Three–Establish a MO Lobby Corps, modeled on the national Lobby Corps, that will focus on the passage of a pay equity bill. Goal Four–Expand the visibility of AAUW through six letters to the editor which will appear in media outlets across Missouri, nine Facebook postings, and nine Twitter messages. AAUW MO Public Policy Co-Chairs Karen Francis and Pat Shores will contact each branch’s public policy chair or branch president in the next few weeks to make plans to meet the first goal of completing one Get Out the Vote activity. This Impact Grant is going to allow AAUW to make a significant difference for Missouri women and girls.

Pam Kulp, Newest

AAUW Legacy

Circle Member

Pam has been an AAUW member for nine years, three of which are with

Ballwin--Chesterfield.

Her decision to join the Legacy Circle is due to her mother's wonderful example of taking on leadership roles for youngsters throughout Pam's childhood. Pam feels that it is an honor to leave some money that will help guide future young women and provide opportunities for them to reach their potential.

PUBLIC POLICY

Ballwin-Chesterfield’s Public Policy program, under the auspices of AAUW’s powerful advocacy program, works locally to promote educational and economic equity and civil rights for all women and girls. During the 2016–17 fiscal year the Ballwin-Chesterfield Public Policy Committee will focus on the following goals:

1. Getting Out the Vote 2. Preventing sexual harassment and sexual violence in school 3. Preventing human trafficking in St. Charles County 4. Passing a gender pay gap bill in Missouri

To implement the goals, several activities are planned. The Missouri Impact Grant will assist GOTV training and registering of new voters at the local community colleges. Funds for the second year of the Human Trafficking Grant have been received and will help support the second day-long symposium on Tuesday, January 11, 2017, at Spencer Library, St. Peters, MO. A second musical fund raiser “John Denver Tribute” will be held on Sunday, September 11, 3–5:30 p.m. at the Villa Therese, O’Fallon, MO. Despite strong bipartisan support, it was disappointing that Gender Pay Equity HB. 44 never got off the ground last year, but with great persistence, we will try again this year. You may find pertinent information at http://www.womens-foundation.org/news/2015/4/14/gender-pay-equity-bill-receives-strong-bipartisan-support-in-the-missouri-legislature and http://www.themaneater.com/stories/2015/3/18/bill-hopes-address-gender-pay-gap/. We are pleased that lawmakers unanimously approved a plan to expand the crime of sex trafficking of a child to include advertising of a child in commercial sex acts. Supporters said the change would give police another way to crack down on predators. This was a win. ~ Barb Butchart & Pat Shores, Public Policy Co-Directors

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND

The EOF committee met in early August to plan our coming year. We are happy to have four local scholarship awardees, two from Maryville and two from UMSL. These women are nontraditional students, 28 years old or older, who have not had the opportunity to complete their undergraduate education. They are students who are following degrees in the STEM fields. Our Dollars for Scholars events provide the funds for these scholarships. This year we will again offer the popular bean soup sale, Panera Bread cards and the very successful Used Book Sale. Our bean soup and Panera cards will be available in September. Plan to bring your used books in October and support our book sale. This sale will be held October, November, January, February, March, and April. National EOF supports fellowships and grants for women all over our country and abroad. Our monthly canasta, along with the LAF committee, supports this cause. We also will have an Individual Giving event in November. We look for 2016–17 to be a very successful year. Ballwin-Chesterfield continues to be so supportive of important work for women. ~ Marian Bauer & Vickie Jany, EOF Co-Directors

LEGAL ADVOCACY FUND

When I joined AAUW about four years ago, I was often perplexed by many of the acronyms that were referred to during meetings. What was EOF--LAF--NCCWSL? For the upcoming year, I volunteered to be on the LAF committee and am slowly finding out exactly what LAF does. The Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) provides financial and organizational support for a select number of cases in the workplace and in academia that have the potential to provide significant protection for all women. Funding is offered for court filing fees, preparation of briefs, filings and other case-based-costs, and for plaintiff court travel. I would encourage you to go to the AAUW national website* and read about past and current cases. Locally, Ballwin-Chesterfield LAF welcomes all members who wish to volunteer. * http://www.aauw.org/what-we-do/legal-resources/ ~ Vickie Jany, LAF Committee

AAUW VISION

AAUW will be a powerful advocate and visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy and measurable change in critical areas impacting the

lives of women and girls.

HELP US GIVE THE NATIONAL BLUES MUSEUM

A BLUESY WELCOME TO ST. LOUIS

Friday, September 23 Tour 10 a.m. Carpool from Trinity, 9:15 a.m. The New York Times, The Smithsonian, and CNN listed the new National Blues Museum as one of the “can’t miss” stops for 2016. Enjoy a guided tour of the legendary music scene and learn how the blues influenced Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and even hip hop. Have fun with the interactive exhibits (one where you can actually join a jug band and play your own instrument and another where you can write your own blues tune). Blues musician Bobby Rush says, “The museum will be great for St. Louis and will get ahold of the real deal on where the blues comes from and where it is going.” Enjoy lunch, on your own, across the street at The Kitchen Sink. Driving directions to the museum at 615 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, 63101 will be available for drivers, who may park for $1/hour in a garage a short block away.

COST: $24 Make a $24 check payable to AAUW Ballwin-Chesterfield by September 16 ($14 tour and $10 DFS contribution). Contact Marian Bauer (mailto:[email protected]) or Pat Shores (mailto:[email protected]) for more information.

GREAT HOUSEWIVES OF ART TOUR Friday, November 4 COST: $12 Tour: 1 p.m., meet in Sculpture Hall, St. Louis Art Museum, 1 Fine Arts Dr. 63110 Optional Lunch: 11:30 a.m., Panorama (Carpool, 10:45 a.m. for those attending lunch before the tour) "Why don't art galleries display more images of modern woman's daily domestic grind?'' Join us for an exclusive docent-led tour inspired by the book Great Housewives of Art by self-taught artist Sally Swain. Swain has reinterpreted the recognizable style of famous paintings to parody “the great women behind the great male artists” and has connected “high art” with aspects of women’s domestic chores.

Building on the focus of women in art, we will explore various women artists in SLAM’s collection, possibly including a unique opportunity to visit the private prints, drawings, and photographs study room. NOTE: This special tour is limited to 12. If more are interested, another tour will be planned for a later date. Register at the September or October branch meeting.
