Braintree artist who turned Barbies into domestic abuse victims has work exhibited

A student artist who transformed Barbie dolls into domestic violencevictims has had her work exhibited.

Sam Humphreys, who is in the final year of a BA (Hons) degree inContemporary Art and Design at Writtle College, painted blood andbruises on the iconic dolls as part of a project at the end of her secondyear.

The mum-of-three, who lives in Bocking, wanted to show the differencebetween the innocent way children view the world and the darker realities.

Her work has been selected as part of a gallery at Leicester Universitycalled Speaking Out, which features depictions of violence against womenin art.

You are so wrong Bhudeeka - as you so often are - having too much to say abouteverything. You have completely missed the point. The barbie is represented tochildren as being perfect and the artist is showing that life is not perfect. Theexhibition is not for children nor aimed at children.

Is it really necessary to use Barbie for this purpose? The whole idea to me is rathermacabre actually. Why on earth would you want to make something so innocent (ifBarbie can be called that) into another of life's lessons. Sorry, this one's not for me.
