The human heart is a conical muscular organ situated in the middle mediastinum in between the two lungs. The base of the heart lies upwards while the apex lies downwards and titled towards the left. The heart is covered by a double walled membranous sac known as the PERICARDIUM.PERICARDIUM.Pericardial fluid, present inside the membrane, protects the heart from shock and lubricates its movements.Heart is very important organ of human body.Heart is very important organ of human body.It is made of muscle and has four chambers, Two in each It is made of muscle and has four chambers, Two in each

THE WORK OF THE HEARTCirculating blood.

The steady pumping of the heart supports life by moving blood through the body. As it flows, blood delivers food and oxygen to all the body's cells and carries away wastes. Blood returns to the heart carrying a waste gas called carbon dioxide that cells produce as they use oxygen to obtain energy from food.

HEART BEATS

Cardiac output = stroke volume x heart rate (number of ventricular

contractions/min)= 70 ml/stroke x 72 strokes/min= 5040 ml/min (5.04 litres/min)

Regulating the heart rate. The heart's cycle of activity has two stages, systole and diastole. Systole (pronounced SIHS tuh lee) occurs when the ventricles contract. Diastole (pronounced dy AS tuh lee) is the stage when the ventricles relax and the atria contract. One complete cycle of contraction and relaxation--called a cardiac cycle--makes up one heartbeat.
