Bradley County SchoolsPerkins IV Reserve Grant2008-2009
Our Focus
To concentrate on designing and implementing a program geared to develop career exploration through investigating career options, participating in real-world applications, and generating a plan to transition into post-secondary education for all CTE students in Bradley County.
Goal 1A is for Availability
• Objective 1: CTE Teachers, Middle School Counselors, and High School Counselors will be trained on the use of Kuder Career Planning Portfolios.
• Objective 2: During each CTE course of the 2008-2009 school year, students will be introduced to the 16 career clusters as they create, develop and maintain a Career portfolio using the Kuder Career Planning website.
• Objective 3: Each semester, there will be a guest speaker from each of the 16 career clusters who will dialogue with CTE students concerning their specific career, industry demands, and local work-force needs.
Goal 2B is for Benefits
• Objective 1: Marketing Programs at BCHS and WVHS will incorporate the Virtual Enterprise International Program to establish a Program of Study for the Marketing students during the 2008-2009 school year.
• Objective 2: Spring of 2009, a Nursing Education and a Principles of Veterinary Science class will be created at WVHS to give students an opportunity to obtain medical, nursing, and animal science skills and complete the Program of Study for Health Science and Agriculture.
• Objective 3: Networking students at BCHS and WVHS will utilize the Test-Out computer program to provide virtual assessment, intervention, and evaluation of computer programming and troubleshooting procedures during both fall and spring semesters of the 2008-2009.
Goal 3C is for Continuity
• Objective 1: During the fall of 2008, each Career Cluster will develop and implement marketing tools that emphasize their Programs of Study, their CTSO, their relationship to post-secondary education and the availability of high-skill, high-wage and high-demand career opportunities.
• Objective 2: During the 2008-2009 school year, provide greater interaction with post-secondary institutions that have articulation/dual credit agreements with the CTE Programs of Studies through increased visibility of Perkins IV agreements, site visitations, and professional development.

Availability:
CTE Teachers, 8th Grade Career Exploration Teachers and Secondary Counselors were trained using KUDER portfolios.
22 Interactive (SMART) Boards were purchased.
Teachers were provided training on the boards.
Meetings were conducted with Counselors to and team to track progress and update information.

More on Availability:
Broadcast Media Classes produced a CTE video used for class registration.
CTE Program Career Fairs conducted at each school. Programs created brochures for recruitment.
All eighth graders assigned to the career exploration classes created KUDER portfolios.
All ninth graders in the Freshmen Academy updated portfolios and added resumes, writing, etc.
Mobile Computer Lab Purchased with mobile printer.

• “Test Out” Program was purchased for the Networking/PC Repair classes at BCHS and WVHS.
• Implementation of a new Nursing Education Class at Walker Valley and development of the program at Bradley Central High School.
• Equip the Broadcast Media Program with duplication equipment for mass production of videos.

• All CTE programs participated in a Back-2-School Bash displaying their Program of Study information and the availability career opportunities.
• Programs participated in Parent nights where information was also made available to all parents.
• Broadcast Media recorded and shot infomercials about the career clusters.
• Hosted a CTE Career Options Fair at both high schools before registration for classes.
• Hosted/Participated in College and Career Fairs.
• Increased Articulation Agreements.
• Created a Bradley County Schools CTE website.
Modifications
• In the original Budget funds were allotted for Apple computer for the Broadcast Media lab. Current IT restrictions inhibit this implementation. Discussions are in progress for future implementation.
• Additional software was purchased to incorporate personal finance in the Marketing program area.
• Also additional funds were allotted for Interactive board training and career lesson plan development.

Getting There: Our Project Timeline
• August: KUDER Portfolio Training. Back-2-school bash.
• September-October: Joint Monitoring for Bradley County Schools. Parent Night. Meetings with Committee.
• November: Meetings with Counselors, Interactive Board Representatives, and committee. Estimates equipment received. Teachers attend a workshop on Integration.
• December: Purchased Interactive Boards, Mobile Computer lab, software, and classroom equipment. Website contract purchased and construction begins. Meeting with Counselors.
Timeline continued• January: Smart Board training sessions begin, work
continues on website, equipped Nursing Education classes begin. CTE promotional videos complete for 2009-2010.
• February: CTE career options fair, CTE website goes online linked to district site, website showcased at joint CTE advisory committee meeting. College and Career fair organized at the high schools.
• March: Teachers attend a joint meeting with CSCC to strengthen articulation agreements.
• April: Students attend College and Career Fairs at CSCC and Athens TTC. Meetings with counselors. Additional work of KUDER portfolios using mobile lab.
• May: Nursing Education students take CNA certification tests.
Our Success…Availability
Through parent nights, CTE career fairs, KUDER portfolio surveys, Broadcast Media infomercials,
and Back-2-school bashes, the secondary students and parents of Bradley County were exposed to career options and the necessary
coursework for obtaining the careers.

Funds provided by the grant expanded the class options
that were available in the Marketing, Health Science, Ag Science and Networking
programs.

The grant paid for our new CTE
website and activities
centered around the transition
from secondary to post-
secondary.
Our Challenges
• CTE Perkins Monitoring for Bradley County Schools pushed everything back three months due to time teachers had to prepare notebooks for the monitoring process.
• Limitations and Restrictions from the IT department delayed some of our decisions on the equipment purchases.
• Communication regarding procedures at the different schools caused some difficulty during the CTE Career Fairs.
Where to go from here• Meetings scheduled for fall 2009 to expand the
progress and develop a Comprehensive K-16 Career Plan for Bradley County Schools.
• Increased integration activities planned to expand the content of the student KUDER portfolios.
• Training opportunities will be provided to continually update the CTE website.
• Plans to expand the articulation/dual creditagreements.
