No49 June/July 2016 3

Welcome to the beginning of another British Summer. Is it tempting fate to mention that June and July are predicted to be warmer than usual? Great

news for flower festivals, school and village fêtes, farm shop tastings, BBQ’s, music festivals and country shows - and right in the heart of BoA, Secret Gardens and the Sculpture Garden Festival.

Keeping it Local is on our minds as we encourage everyone to support local businesses by shopping on the high street. We highlight some superb local hotels and restaurants for summer wining and dining, as well as drawing attention to a new micro-brewery in Bradford on Avon.

Riverford franchisees at Winsley are keen to deliver the freshest of fresh vegetables, meat and fish right to your door, along with some truly inventive recipes, while Demuths Cookery Courses are a fun way to add zest to cookery skills.

Local entertainment abounds, including the Bradfordians production of Jane Austen’s Emma at the Tithe Barn, The Tempest in the gardens of Lacock Abbey, and an intriguing youth theatre production at St Margaret’s Hall. The fun filled BoA Mini Book Festival and Summer Reading Challenge return to the BoA library to delight the young.

Read all about our resident film director; get seriously informed on the In-Out question; and check out the latest gossip… We will be back with more at the beginning of August!

This year we celebrate ten years of action locally to

mitigate the effects of climate change. Indeed, we are committed to Bradford being carbon neutral by 2050; almost 900 people have pledged their commitment to achieving this aim.

Over the past decade Climate Friendly Bradford (CFB) has spread the message at scores of local meetings and events and launched a variety of initiatives.

In 2009 CFB was awarded a grant of £140,000 which enabled the installation of solar panels at Christchurch School and a hundred homes to be made more energy-efficient. In 2012 CFB was awarded £60,000 government funding towards more energy-efficient homes.

Actions included tree-planting at Barton Farm Country Park and the production of an Active Travel Map to advise people to walk,

cycle or take the bus rather than drive. Seedy Sunday, to encourage people to grow their own food, was first held in 2011 and has become a successful annual event. CFB’s Sustainable Food and Drink Group staged a trade show in 2014 which was attended by local food producers and retailers. Also in 2014, CFB was one of the sponsors when following a sustained fundraising effort, Fitzmaurice School was equipped with an array of solar panels – pictured left.

CFB has been active in seeking to influence our local MP and councillors to support climate friendly policies.

If you wish to know more please visit our website at

and subscribe to our monthly e-newsletter or, better still, come along to one of our monthly meetings.

The Wessex Midsummer Vintage Show Sat 18 & Sun 19 June

The Show was a huge success in 2015, with around 350 vintage exhibits. This year sees the return of Living History Groups, re-living the old west and the era of the American Civil War.

There will be vintage vehicles of all types, Tractors, Cars, Commercials, horticultural machinery of a bygone age, Steam Engines both full size and miniature, large display of stationary engines will drive an array of old items from corn mills to water pumps. Also trade stands and a craft marquee. The weekend is a great time out for all the family with lots to see and do. Please ring 01225 754374 or visit www.wessexsec.org for more information. This much loved event celebrates 35 summers

of open gardens. Visitors discover the delightful scent of roses, jasmine, lavender, honeysuckle and rosemary in up to fifteen private gardens. From magnificent spaces with beautiful lawns, shrubs and sculptures, to neat and quirky areas, with carefully planned flower beds and vegetable patches. The kind hospitality of the hardworking and dedicated gardeners also includes tea, cakes and cooling drinks.

It’s the final opportunity to visit 90 yr old Doreen’s surprise garden in Margaret Street. The indomitable Doreen not only continues to dig the garden herself, but also remembers all the botanical names of her plants. The Secret Garden Group, as well as regular visitors, will greatly miss her participation.

If you would like to help support local charities by opening your garden feel free to contact Maxine Harraway or Rob Keegan at [email protected].

Tickets £6.00 from the TIC in Westbury Gardens. Children under 14 go free. Dogs on leads welcome. This year proceeds benefit the BoA Museum.

BoA Neighbourhood Plan - Final Consultation

A great deal of effort has been made in formulating a ten year plan for Bradford on Avon by the BoA Town Council. Residents; school

pupils; businesses; the Neighbourhood Plan Team; the Topic Groups; the Bradford on Avon Photographic Group; and Andrew Eberlin on graphics have done sterling work.

While the plan is admirable in its attention to detail on many subjects, recommendations on how to deal with the most pressing issues: parking provisions, traffic flow and a possible footbridge, are conspicuously sidestepped.

It is important that residents and business owners who desire to live and work not only in a ‘perfect setting’, but in a vigorous and vibrant town, read through this document and complete the survey by voicing their opinions.

Submit your comments, ideas and thoughts on how to achieve such a vision before 5pm on 17 June online at www.bradfordonavontowncouncil.gov.uk/consultation

Monkton Fairleigh Manor provides a

glorious setting for the very best of the local summer fêtes. By kind permission of Sir Charles and Lady Hobhouse, the front lawn of their early Georgian manor house - with magnificent views stretching across to the Vale of Pewsey - is open to visitors far and near.

From welly wanging and plate smashing, to shying at coconuts and sipping a summer ‘Pimms’ cup it’s a topping afternoon of fun for all the family. Young visitors can ride on a mini steam train or in a goat carriage, inspect a tractor and combine harvester, bounce on a bouncy castle, and dip into the lucky dip. There’s a white elephant stall loaded with trash and treasures, stalls with books, plants, toys, bottles and even a stall for the ‘body beautiful’.

An exceptional cream tea is served on the terrace. The proceedings are enlivened by the Salvation Army Band. Further entertainment is provided by the children of Churchfields Primary School who give an annual dancing display.

Entry £1 (children go free) and there’s a goodly sized area for parking. Proceeds go to support the church.

A Helping Hand - Bradford Museum

B radford Museum’s main ‘wow factor’ is Miss

Christopher’s chemist shop, relocated in its entirety from Silver Street in 1990. Curator, Roger Clark has also created numerous themed displays which tell the story of our town from pre-Roman times. The museum welcomes 6,000 visitors each year, but due to lack of available stewards, there are days when the Museum cannot be opened and so they need help.

Would you be interested? If so, please email Gillian or Joceline - details below.

Helpers are also needed to bake cakes and/or serve teas on the Secret Gardens open day on Sunday 28 June – the proceeds of which will benefit the museum this year. Or perhaps you could help man our stand on Saturday 4 July at the Trinity Fair in Westbury for an hour or so. “We hope there are some willing workers out there that might have time to spare!”

The Revival of Corsham Station

A ccording to the chairman of the Corsham Train Group Project, the station could re-opened as soon as 2019.

It almost happened a few years back. The monies and planning had been rubber stamped, but the rail industry withdrew the only type of train that could have stopped there. However, now that selective door opening is available, the expense of a full length platform could be spared.

The need for a station might also be speeded up since Corsham has been selected for a £40m Ministry of Defence cyber security hub. MP Michelle Donelan, who has been an active supporter of the process commented, “On top of the MOD news, we have a strong economic case here and there is a lot of goodwill behind this project. It is costly, time consuming, but very worthwhile.”

A Wiltshire Council study suggests that the station could carry up to 400,000 passengers a year. It tested four options: Bristol Temple Meads to Swindon; Bristol Temple Meads to Oxford; Cardiff Central to Swindon; and an extension of the MetroWest service from Bath Spa to Chippenham.

61 years after the station closed, momentum is definitely building.

Fracking - The Battle Continues

T hree anti-fracking campaigners, including hunger

striker Gazyer Frackman from Blackpool, served a legal notice on the Prime Minister with regard to the risks and harms of fracking on health, the environment and

climate. They also delivered a detailed report which recommends that the government abandon its pro-fracking policy in the light of these issues - to both David Cameron and to all MPs: http://www.medact.org/resources/health-fracking-report/

Gayzer Frackman, whose house was damaged by fracking-induced earthquakes near Blackpool in 2011, had been on hunger strike for several weeks outside Downing Street in an effort to make the Prime Minister address the dangers this process presents to water tables, farmland, food and even to the climate. His ultimate aim is a total ban on fracking.

Gayzer explained ‘...this Government is blind to science, democracy and the public interest. Cameron has said he is going to make Blackpool the shale capital of Europe. It is clear that he intends to impose fracking on communities throughout the UK without a care for the known risks and widespread opposition to it. We, communities united together, will stop him.”

Box Hill & the Hazelbury EstateIntroducing walks with your four legged friend, specially researched

from the books ‘A Dog Walkers Guide’.

Dog factorsDistance: 3½ miles.

Road walking: There are very short sections of road walking at the start and finish of the walk in Box Hill, albeit on quiet unclassified roads.

Livestock: All of the fields along the way are arable. There can be pigs near Hazelbury Common.

Stiles: None.

Nearest vets: Hale Veterinary Group, 37 High Street, Corsham SN13 0EZ. 01249 715097

From Box Hill Common the first highlight is an area of

ancient woodland, whose pitted ground is evidence of a stone-mining past. Beyond the tree cover, the path emerges onto open ground with a fine view across the By Brook Valley and Box to Colerne on the distant hilltop. More woodland follows – watch out for the pigs running free here – before the walk reaches Hazelbury Common. An oasis of natural grassland, this common is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna; 31 species of butterfly have been recorded on the common including Clouded Yellow, Small Blue and Comma. A rather grand driveway brings the route to Hazelbury Manor, whose most spectacular features are the hall bay and the two-storey porch, before open fields return the walk to Box Hill.

TerrainA mix of field margins, enclosed footpaths and wide tracks. There is one ascent along the way but it is far from challenging.

Where to parkThere are parking spaces on the edge of Box Hill Common

(GR: 834693). Map: OS Explorer 156 Chippenham & Bradford on Avon.

How to get thereLeave the A365 Box to Melksham road at Fiveways Junction, 1 mile from Box, and follow the B3109 towards Corsham. In 1 mile, turn left into White Ennox Lane. In 600 yards, at a crossroads by Tunnel Inn, turn left and drive for 350 yards to a junction by a small green. Turn right at this junction to reach Box Hill Common in 50 yards.

RefreshmentsThe Quarrymans Arms on Box Hill, almost at the end of the walk, welcomes dogs in its bar area. It is open seven days a week, serving food until 3 pm and between 5:30 pm and 9 pm on weekdays. At weekends, food is served all day until 9 pm. 01225 743569. Postcode: SN13 8HN.

DOG WALKS

Page 18: Bradford on Avon no49 June July

The Walk1 Walk back to the junction and follow the road that runs to the right of the green. Cross the road and follow a bridleway into woodland, keeping left at an early fork. Follow the path along the edge of the woodland for 350 yards until it bears left out of the tree cover. In a few steps, at junction, take the path on the right that runs along the edge of the hilltop, down to the village of Box. In 350 yards, at a junction just past the end of a wall, follow the track to the left. Drop down to a crossroads in 300 yards before following the track opposite that climbs uphill to reach Hazelbury Common in ¼ mile.

2 Turn left and walk up the left edge of the common to reach a driveway on the left leading to Hazelbury Manor, just before the B3109 road. Walk down the driveway and, in 500 yards, immediately past a pair of stone gateposts, turn right along an estate road. Pass a barn on the left in 200 yards before continuing for another 200 yards to a point where a footpath crosses the estate road. Turn left and walk across the middle of a field to a gap in a stone wall opposite.

3 Beyond this gap, turn left and walk along the edge of the next field for 350 yards before turning right to walk across the open field towards a copse opposite. Pass through a gate by this copse before following a road to the right to a crossroads by Tunnel Inn. Turn left and, in 40 yards by a property, turn left onto an enclosed footpath. Keeping right at a fork, follow this path for 200 yards until it emerges by some properties. Keep ahead on an access road to a fork by Sidan Cottage and veer right to emerge on the road in Box Hill by the Quarrymans Arms. Turn left back to the common.

P reparations are well under way for the annual Bradford on Avon Arts Festival.

The theme: OUTER SPACE so expect some interesting, exciting and different events. From spaceship lanterns made from tissue paper to talks about how the Georgians viewed Outer Space.

The festival will be launched June 18th when we invite you all to the Sculpture Garden held in the beautiful garden setting at the home of Glenys and George Lunt in Woolley Street. An inspiring exhibition of contemporary sculpture by local artists, with a few special guests from further afield.

The main festival runs from 4th to 18th September with many opportunities to get involved whether you are poet, painter, or photographer.

Here are a few highlights:

Space & Heaven Will Reardon – Art Exhibition If Angels come from Heaven and highly evolved beings come from

space, could our concepts of space & heaven be equal?

Is the Earth not a planet in space? Does this mean we are already in Heaven? Perhaps a shift in consciousness is all that is required to allow us to appreciate that which we already have.

With a new collection of work, Will Reardon explores humanity’s ancient history and galactic future in a fun and enlightening exhibition.

Small & Beautiful – a chance to own a small picture which might have been painted by a well know painter or a gifted amateur. On show during the festival at the Weaving Shed Restaurant will be a hundred or more paintings for sale at £10 each. But the identity of the artist is kept secret until after purchase.

‘Kinetics’ A Play by Sue WylieThursday 15th SeptemberSt Margaret’s Hall

What can a teenage boy who is into free running and a middle-aged woman with Parkinson’s possibly have in common? The desire to move…

Out of this World - the climax of the Festival with a Lantern Procession and of course our End of Summer Party! For the lantern procession we have designed kits for you to make either a rocket or a star. The kits are on sale at J Alex Brown Hardware Store and from our stall in Lambs Yard, on Saturdays through the summer where we will show you how to make your lantern. For more information email Kate Nottage: [email protected]

Just like last year's End of Summer Party you can expect entertainment, fabulous lights, food stalls, and a bar. Put the date in your diary: September 17th Westbury Gardens.

Summer Sculptures 18-26 June

The BoA Sculpture Garden Exhibition has grown year on year to become a favourite fixture and precursor to the BoA Arts Festival. The works of

local sculptors, with a few special guests from further afield, are displayed in the stunning gardens of Lynchett’s, 15 Woolley Street, with one or more of the sculptors on hand to discuss their work each day.

The opening Saturday evening party is particularly enjoyable with visitors wandering across the lawns and along winding pathways appraising the artworks with a glass of wine in hand. The addition of local group ‘This Side of Paris’ playing light jazz helps the evening ‘go with a swing’.

Amazing Journeys Have Outstanding Beginnings

B eing offered a place at an Oxbridge university is an impressive achievement. Sam Watt and Lily Bayntun-Coward from Monkton Combe

are hoping to take up offers to study Maths and Classics respectively at Cambridge, following A Level results in August. Since the age of two they have attended Monkton Pre-Prep, Prep School, Senior School and finally Sixth Form for GCSEs and A Levels.

Pre-Prep Glenburnie, a much-loved Georgian villa with a separate Chapel in the garden, is currently being sold to fund a new £4.4 million development to provide enhanced teaching and learning facilities. Scheduled to open this Autumn, the new building will accommodate additional places, inspiring play and woodland areas, an upgraded swimming pool, sports facilities, and extensive parking.

Lily and Sam agree that despite ongoing changes at Monkton, one thing has remained constant - the strong sense that every individual is valued: Lily says, “I’ve watched so many pupils really thrive here, find their passion and strengths and grow into young adults who know who they are and who they want to be because, at Monkton, pupils are treated with the importance, interest and respect that every individual deserves.” monktoncombeschool.com

Here’s some suggested reading. We recommend

getting unbiased opinions from sources other than the main media to fully arm yourselves with the facts prior to the vote. The most important thing is that as many people vote on such an important event in our relationship with Europe since 1975.

Why Vote Leave by Daniel Hannan

Brussels MEP Hannan believes that with the freedom to make our own laws and forge our own global relationships we will not only see a resurgence of British pride, democracy and free speech but lower tax bills, food and energy prices. He is clear in pointing out that as a trading bloc Europe had 30% of the global pot in 1980, but has

just 17% in 2016. While 79% of British business is conducted internally, 11% with the rest of the world, only 10% is with the EU - and falling. Meanwhile every UK business is forced to comply with often onerous European rules & regulations.

Perhaps most importantly he asks: Is the European Union about international collaboration or supranational coercion? Are we an independent country co-operating with our neighbours, or a sub-unit within a European super state, which votes on laws in secret - often after being lobbied by vested interests?

Slippery Slope: Europe's Troubled Future by Giles Merritt

Named one of the 30 most influential ‘Eurostars’ by the Financial Times, Merritt argues

IN or OUT? 23rd June 2016Two informative new books from experts on Brussels:

that Britain needs Europe because no single European country can survive and prosper in a fast-developing world of 9-10 billion people. While he does not gloss over the problems inherent in the European Union, he believes that it is vital for Britain to be part of the necessary reforms. He does not shrink from explaining the threat to our comparatively privileged lives if Europe doesn’t pull together to stem Europe’s global decline in this ‘Asian century.’

Both books are available in print or on kindle.

One of the great advantages of shopping in a local independent store is

that it provides an opportunity to touch, feel, and even try out the product you are thinking of buying. Recommendations and reviews on the net are helpful, but physically handling comparable brands and models while discussing the pros and cons with assistants who actually know their stuff, is a real bonus.

If you are looking for the chance to shop in a store and benefit from personal advice be sure to visit our local gem, Knees. pricing is very competitive and compares favourably against larger retailers.

Knees have a wide range of integrated and standalone

electricals including; AEG, Belling, Bosch, Neff, Rangemaster, Siemens, Smeg, Stoves, Zanussi. Other brands include Brabantia, Dyson and KitchenAid and these compliment the wide range of home furniture including sofa’s and beds available in store.

The new Neff Slide&Hide® Oven is just one example of the latest in home appliance developments available to see in store. Their exclusive oven door feature is stylish, seriously space saving and

I t’s official. Research shows that when we shop locally, we make a hugely positive and measurable

contribution to the local community. For every £1 spent locally, 50p -70p recirculates back into the local economy. For the same £1 spent out of town/online, only 5p trickles back. With such

compelling evidence, will greater numbers filter back to the town centre shops and services? We have to believe that when people really appreciate the impact of their choices they will make an effort to spend more of their budgets with local independent businesses.

Of course, shopping destinations need to be fun places to go, offering attractive, good quality, interesting and even unique merchandise, and as always there is room for improvement. Banding together with other traders to raise awareness, pressure bureaucracy and cross fertilise with other towns is a

useful way to increase footfall. ‘Independent Retailer Month’ is a promotional opportunity originally set up by ‘Shop Local’ advocate Clare Rayner and runs throughout July. Get involved at independentretailermonth.co.uk. While as a small independent business ourselves, we will be championing what’s on offer locally in the coming issues.

We have some great businesses in town. Christine’s Sustainable Supermarket, Fetch Pet and Orton’s Jewellers attract customers far and wide. Boundless Blooms are superior florists, and little Madame Bijou has a growing reputation for

exclusivity. While Knees may no longer be on its corner in Bradford on Avon it’s not far off in neighbouring Trowbridge

Local, seasonal food is by far the healthiest option for our wellbeing and here in Wiltshire we are blessed with a ready supply of almost every food group. Luscious milk and butter from Ivy House Farms; Home Baked Breads from Bath, Bertinet and Hobbs Bakeries. Cheeses made at Neston, Bath and Brinkworth; organic eggs from South Wraxall; free range, organically fed chickens from Trowbridge; home grown meat from Church Farm at Broughton Gifford and Hartley Farm in Winsley; top quality vegetables from Pagets at Bromham, Mayfield Organic at Holt, and just by the Bradford Leigh traffic

lights, JJ will even pick organic veg while you wait; Harts bring fresh fish up from the coast to BoA and Frome markets; Wiltshire orchards produce an abundance of fruit in the summer and autumn that you can pick yourselves; and even award winning wines produced at Quoins in Little Ashley.

One stop shopping and ease of parking are reasons most people patronise supermarkets. Yet with a little planning and forethought, a trip to the town centre to buy real, local food and interact with traders really does keep the community strong; and is surely a happier experience than breathing recycled air in the sterile aisles of garishly lit supermarkets buying mass produced, plastic wrapped food - in our humble opinion.

Local stores and services can provide just about everything needed for life in BoA. From financial advice to graphic design and IT wisdom. From food to fashion, beauty to bling, hardware to pet supplies. From wedding dresses and floral arrangements to tattoos, bicycles and award winning fudge, from artwork to bespoke kitchens - not to mention first class live entertainment and a growing gastronomic reputation. Our cup runneth over! Let’s make a difference by being social and keeping it local…

James Trescothick-Martin, Wills And Probate Lawyer at BLB Solicitors in Bradford on Avon, recommends that his clients draw up more than just a Will.

Not just a Willbut also a List

I have recently been assisting a friend whose husband, a man in his late fifties, sadly suddenly died.

An avid rugby fan, loving father and husband, he was someone who lived his life to the full. He was described by many as living for today and in the moment.

Of course there is nothing wrong with having a zest for life but, when he died, he unwittingly caused a major problem. He was unfortunately not one to keep records. He had no Will, no bank statements, no insurance details and no details of any of his assets. The loss of a loved one is always traumatic, and seldom easy to cope with, but what made this harder for his family was having no way of knowing what assets he had or where to find out all the information that is required to obtain a Grant of Probate.

Not only is it important to have

a Will in place, it is also essential that your family and Executors know some basic details about your assets and liabilities, or even just know where to put their hands on the relevant information. I therefore suggest to my clients that they prepare a list of basic information just in case. The list should, amongst other things include:

1. Where your Will and Lasting Power of Attorney, if you have them, are stored;

2. The name of your solicitors, Financial Adviser and/or accountant;

3. Your bank name and account numbers (but not of course PIN numbers);

4. Details of any insurances, or similar products such as life insurance, car insurance,

buildings & contents insurance, funeral plans etc;

5. Your funeral wishes; and

6. Details of other assets you might own such as stocks and shares, investment plans or pensions.

A simple list with a few basic details can not only save months of worry but also fruitless searching. It can also save time (and possibly money) when your estate is being wound up. The list can even be kept, often for no extra cost, with your Will, but you must remember to update it periodically.

This is a simple, practical suggestion born from both professional and personal experience. If you have any questions about Wills, Inheritance, Estate or Care Fees planning, please do feel free to contact me.

A Talent to AmuseUp Close with Paul Weiland of Belcombe Court - Angela Clarence

P aul Weiland is hailed as the UK’s most successful commercial director. Hamlet Cigars

and the Walkers Crisps’ series with Gary Lineker are just two examples of a wry wit that delights both advertisers and audiences. Weiland’s knack for comedy has also made ‘millions laugh’ with his episodes of Mr Bean, Alias Smith and Jones and Blackadder Back and Forth, the final adventure in which Sir Edmund changes his destiny

thanks to Baldrick’s miraculous Time Machine.

Weiland has himself worked miracles with time in

restoring Belcombe Court from its seriously dilapidated state into an elegant and comfortable home with all mod cons. The original house was built in the 15th century and extended in the 18th century. When Paul and his wife first set eyes on it some 23 years ago, they were touched by its beauty and proportions, but “It needed everything - roof, electrics, plumbing, flooring and the garden was in a poor state. The challenge of eking out its hidden potential was irresistible. I’m a perfectionist, but I can also multi-task doing ten things at once. Over the years we’ve contemporised it.”

Modern paintings and decor cleverly combine with Georgian elements to bring the house firmly into the 21st century. The medieval barn has been

transformed into an ideal space for events with the addition of a modern kitchen and loos, without losing any of its ancient heritage. The garden, registered

by English Heritage as being of special historic interest, has also had sympathetic updating and is overlooked by an infinity pool, and the 45 acres of Parkland are now home to a herd of Hebridean sheep, highly valued for their ‘conservation grazing’.

With their two eldest children having left home, the Weilands are downsizing in London and

“I’m a perfectionist. I can also multi-task - doing ten things at once.”

planning to spend more time at Belcombe. “We’ve completed most of the major projects and it’s where I feel the most comfort. My heart lies here.” They also hope to maximise the use of the

house for corporate and family events, retreats and weddings.

Just last month they held their annual ‘Open Garden’ event in aid of the Red Cross raising £6,000. Weiland was also present at a screening of his feature film Sixty-Six at the BoA Film Society for a Q&A session. The packed audience was drawn in by this tender, funny and

self-deprecating tale with its feel good ending based on his own bar-mitzvah when only three people turned up because everyone was watching the 1966 World Cup Final! “I love directing because you can re-write history, but when the film came out on the same day as Borat and the same week as Casino Royale, art imitated life. I was invisible yet again.”

Weiland has received a raft of awards for commercials, a BAFTA for his Storyteller – The Ravens, an Emmy for Living with Dinosaurs and last year was presented with an OBE, “The cherry on a career cake.” Meanwhile, he and his company Contagious London are still busy making commercials and he has a TV project on the bubble with producer Stephen Garrett who

has just come off The Night Manager. His Hollywood movies City Slickers II and Made of Honour are shown repeatedly. As a founder member of Comic Relief and director of some 50 films for charity, many owe him a deep debt of thanks, and millions across the globe are still laughing at Mr Bean.

For a lad who left school at 16 with no qualifications and started his career as a messenger boy, Weiland’s inimitable creativity and his admirable quest for “maintaining a balance in life” have truly served him well.

Kettlesmith Brewing Company – Modern Explorations in Beer

Antony Field and his wife Caroline grew up in Corsham and attended The Corsham School. After 12 years in San Francisco, Antony in the ‘special effects’ industry and Caroline working as an earthquake engineer, they have settled in BoA.

“I’ve been brewing beer for over twenty years and while my brews have English roots, I am also exploring modern interpretations of Belgian and US styles. My initial line up of six beers offers a range of flavours and is selling to local pubs and restaurants. I particularly want to encourage restaurants to take beers more seriously. It is so easy to have a different

beer for each course - much easier to achieve than wine.”

A certified Cicerone (the equivalent of a Wine Sommelier), Antony is primed to add some crafty creations to the area with beer pairing workshops to follow. Already on tap at The Bunch of Grapes, you can also say hello and pick up some beer direct from the brewery near Sainsbury’s on Saturday’s 10-2pm starting in June.

Did you know: Himalayan Pink Salt is sea salt deposited millions of years ago, containing the same 84 trace minerals and elements as the human body? Refined Table Salt contains substances that our bodies find hard to eliminate.

Solsbury Hill HoneyPeter Davis from Batheaston is Apiary Manager for the Bath Beekeeping Society offering regular courses on beekeeping skills. He also harvests between 500 and 2,000 lbs of honey a year depending on the weather! His bees collect nectar from rape and bean flowers before moving on to brambles, ivy and Himalayan Balsam and finally miles and miles of Exmoor heather.

After the honeycombs are harvested they are put through a simple filtering system that contrasts sharply with highly processed supermarket brands.

Honey contains trace enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids that offer health benefits revered for millennia. Local honey can also protect against allergies and is used in hospitals for dressings because of its anti-bacterial properties. Great stuff.

Demuths Cookery SchoolSublime Vegetarian FlavoursLearning how to make Andalucian Tapas at Demuth’s award winning Cookery School was as therapeutic as a mini-break and left me on a culinary high.

Cool zinc surfaces, tall ceilings and Georgian sash windows engender a feeling of lightness and relaxation. Rachel Demuth herself is authoritative yet soothing. “I always start the courses by making bread. It gets the group doing something right away. Kneading always helps everyone relax.”

The very antithesis of a fire breathing TV chef, Rachel has been imbuing students with gastronomic wisdom for twenty years. “People come to us to improve their diet and way of life. They make dishes that they wouldn’t normally think of attempting, and we give them the confidence to go home and experiment.”

She travels extensively adding innovative recipes and ingredients to her repertoire. Her alumni are drawn from all over the world. I made Empanadillas (Spanish mini pasties) with Ceri from Wales. Alongside Kristina from Hungary we taste tested everyone’s Romesco Sauce - a scrumptious dip of roasted red pepper, blended with almonds and garlic. Yum!

We made individual loaves of Spanish Semolina Bread to take home; learnt how to make Salmarejo, a rich tomato soup; a Tortilla de Patatas; Paella de Primavera with seasonal veggies which rivalled anything I’ve tasted in Andalucia; and I’m hoping

to wow the ladies at the village fête with the rich Orange and Almond Cake.

Their menus reflect farmhouse cooking with a twist - using the latest in modern techniques which elevates familiar dishes to fine dining status.

Guy Watson started by delivering vegetables to

friends in Devon. Having elevated the veg box concept to a whole new level, it’s a service that adapts to singles, large families, career couples, convalescents and holidaymakers.

And then there are the ‘Recipe Boxes’. Local franchisees Alan and Vicki from Limpley Stoke cover Bath and the surrounding area. Last bank holiday, Alan turned up with a box bursting

with goodness and vitality (no more than two days from farm to delivery). Luscious veggies, little pots of pungent spices, dairy products in a cool bag, and three surprisingly inventive recipes with easy to follow instructions.

My onion pakoras were the best I’ve ever tasted - bite sized, fluffy and a perfect accompaniment to the Beetroot and Mushroom Curry, an unusual combination that was totally delicious and that I shall make again and again.

The Aubergine Involtini - a super sophisticated stuffed aubergine was another hit.

In this era of processed food and long working hours, Riverford’s concept of high quality, local merchandise delivered to your door, coupled with healthy recipes that tickle your taste buds, is a bit of a revelation.

Nexus – a game for all the family

Valerie Jureidini is a Bradfordian, an octogenarian and an inventor extraordinaire. Two years ago, she saw a game in her dreams,

and determined to turn it into reality. One year on she has sold nearly a thousand units and gained a following across the world.

Destined to become a classic similar to Scrabble, Mah-jong and Dominoes, Valerie has crafted an intriguing game for all the

family – for anyone who can count to 30. It can be played alone or with up to six players, and whilst relatively simple, relying mainly on luck, each game is intriguingly different.

Nexus helps young children learn spatial and numerical awareness in a fun and competitive way and helps the

elderly keep their wits about them! Being numbers based there are no language barriers so it can be played anywhere

in the world. Valerie’s son, who lives in Hong Kong has a vigorous Chinese following and recently on holiday in Nepal, played with locals at the base of Everest.

Totally addictive and eminently portable in a little drawstring bag, Nexus is handy for travelling, holidays and makes an ideal gift. A snip at just £14.95 it’s available from: Art is in the Name - BoA, Clever Minds - Chippenham, Books - Devizes and Ellen Bray - Frome.

the support of public donations and corporate sponsorship. Without them, hospitals would be forced to use taxis or commercial couriers. Freewheelers EVS alone save the NHS more than £250,000 a year.

Watch out for their members fundraising at bike shows, street fairs, summer fêtes, supermarkets and other community events. One little girl donated her pocket money because the blood and drugs delivered “saved my mummy and new baby”.

“We ride to play our part in saving peoples’ lives - to save the NHS money - but more than anything else we ride because we love it.”

BLOOD BIKERS

Freewheelers EVS, the group covering Somerset, Bristol, Bath, West Wiltshire and the South Gloucestershire area, have been operating since 1990 and handle around 3,500 calls a year. In 2008 they received The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. Last summer they also began a partnership with Great Western Air Ambulance and Wiltshire Air Ambulance services delivering fresh whole bloods nightly. The unused supplies back to the blood bank in the morning.

Staffed wholly by unpaid volunteers, they rely entirely on

A retained firefighter receives full training, commits to being available at particular times, and is paid for time served. When a pocket alerter is activated, you have just five minutes to report to the fire station and mobilise.

If you live or work no more than five minutes from the fire station, interested regardless of gender, please contact District Commander Station Manager Andy Green. [email protected] or visit www.dwfire.org.uk/working-for-us

Newsflash: Corsham and Malmesbury are also actively seeking volunteers

A Noble Calling - volunteering as a retained firefighter

In an age of cutbacks, the Wiltshire &

Swindon Combined Fire Service has merged with Dorset to become the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire

and Rescue Authority. Despite the savings achieved, Wiltshire Council Tax payers experienced a 7.4% rise in their contribution. However, this turns out to be a one-off payment imposed by the government to achieve parity with Dorset.

Meanwhile, the Bradford on Avon station is eager to hear from anyone interested in volunteering to become retained firefighters. This part-time position involves fighting fires, dealing with floods, road traffic collisions, chemical spills, animal rescues, and promoting fire safety messages. BoA station also supports the ambulance service by attending medical emergencies before the paramedics arrive.

AGILE WORKSPACE COMING TO BoA

T he iconic Kingston House will open in early autumn as a high specification workspace for new and aspiring businesses.

Founder and CEO of Kingston House Limited, Gerald Milward-Oliver, explained: “We’re going to provide Bradford on Avon with one of the finest working environments in the West of England, with a mix of amazing easy-in easy-out workspaces. The tariff will be extremely competitive and all-inclusive, with no hidden extras.

More details in the next issue. Meanwhile, you can reserve space or indicate your interest at kingstonhouse.org.uk.

The Benefits of Business Awards

B radford on Avon Business has recently announced an

array of awards to showcase the diverse businesses and industries in BoA and surrounding villages. Enter now via www.boabusiness.co.uk. Award Ceremony October 13th in St Margaret’s Hall - tenders invited.

Winning, being shortlisted or even nominated for awards should not be underestimated. Psychologically, it encourages businesses and individuals to up

their game; business to business, it provides credibility, validation, trust and promotional leverage; while customers feel more at ease buying into award-winning brands. “When you or your business wins an award, it's literally like injecting it with rocket fuel,” declares American business trainer Sarah Cordiner. I talked to some local enterprises about their experience:

Rob Allcock at The Longs Arms a veritable magnet for awards: “The industry really pays attention to posts on Facebook, Twitter and Trip Advisor.”

Jackie Allan, multi-award winner for Meg’s Cottage Fudge: “While it is a plus to be able to impress customers with accolades, the real benefit of awards happens behind the scenes. If you want to place your products in large stores, they love the fact that your product has been validated.”

Nathan Barnowski at Ojo Solutions shortlisted in the SPARKIES: “It was a real honour to receive recognition for our work in a tech space that is global - we are competing with China and Hong Kong as much as the guy next door.”

Back your favourite firms for A RURAL REWARD

T he clock is ticking to enter the prestigious Rural Business Awards. Nominate your favourites, or self-nominate, before June 30th. There are 13 groupings including Best Rural Start Up and Best Food and

Drink Business, along with Entrepreneur of the Year – and you can enter in more than category. A full list can be found at ruralbusinessawards.co.uk/enter

slice of LIFE

I t’s all change in the Shambles as erstwhile French baker Gilles moves into the Grumpy Badger

Café bringing with him another touch of Gallic sophistication. ‘In or Out’, we’ll no doubt be dipping freshly baked croissants into fragrant bowls of coffee soon.

Caroline at Tillions is keeping shtum as to who’s taking over her property. In the meantime, goods are flying of the shelves as customers stock up on glass, china, and kitchenware. Better be quick if you want a lemon zester, a bit of royal Worcester or a Rugby mug. I snapped up the very last spiralizer.

Overheard in the Shambles: “A sex shop’s coming next door the pet shop. That’ll be ideal for ‘Brideford’ on Avon!” Sorry to disappoint. Rumour has it that a year-round Christmas shop will be twinkling there soon.

Talking of passion, what about a dating service? One mature resident reports that while the internet is as busy hooking up baby boomers as millennials, the road to romance can be bumpy for over 50’s on the web. For more reliable personal introductions,

you have to try Bath’s exclusive agencies…for now.

Meanwhile, it’s been rumoured that Sebastien’s is closing. Not so, it’s just that they are not exactly ‘open all hours’. Their new bi-monthly themed tasting evenings from around the world is stimulating taste buds, though. From Provençal to Pondicherry you get 4 mouth-watering courses for just £29.50.

Still grieving that Waitrose passed on taking over Budgen’s? At least the Co-op is Fairtrade, but it’s unlikely they’ll have room to incorporate a butcher and fish counter. All we know is that the friendly staff are staying put. Hope they’ll be better at keeping shelves stocked than the delightfully chaotic store on the Winsley Road!

BoA car parks are rumoured to be reverting back to the administration of the town council. A perfect opportunity to relocate all-day permits - sold to commuters and Mod workers - to Bailey’s Barn which would release spaces for shoppers and tourists. Really useful parking map at: http://bit.ly/parkboa

With 400 interested buyers already on their database, Kingston Farm developers have made a video declaring the development is “set within walking distance of the mainline station and town centre”. Hmmm. I guess the new footpath down through Kingston Mills will help. See the vid: http://bit.ly/259j8ME

Thanks to the enterprising Jacquie at Piha, Saturday markets are coming to Lamb’s Yard. Alternating weekly themes to include Local Charities; Local Artisans; Clubs of BoA; Entertainment and Theatre; with a ‘Surprise’ on any 5th Saturdays.

The hugely successful Café Grounded will be moving into the site next to The Weaving Shed to create a triumvirate of eateries overlooking the river. This chain of comfy, affordable, all day dining, family friendly, chain of café bars have proved a huge hit in Bristol, Bath and Corsham and will no doubt prove to be a favourite in BoA.
