Quotes:

“ in order to take a shot in a game, you must get a shooting license- you must do this by making certain percentage of shots before or after practice. Shooting is about reps.”

“Do your best players get the most amount of shots?”

“Must get good at sealing right after you get off a screen.”

“Players must be able to make their decisions on the catch (for passing) how am I guarded, how is the post guarded, where is the help.”

Keys to hiding a non shooter

1. Get bad shooters to be able to make one shot, like bruce Bowden and the corner threes. 2. What role can that non shooter play? must be a hell of a defender, must be a great rebounder,

especially a long rebounder 3. Posting up the players that can’t shoot, so you can space the floor, but posting up, must get a

paint touch or we aren’t going to give you the ball. 4. Must be good cutters, who can change pace and make meaningful cuts 5. When a non shooter is sagged off, by two or more men, cut and replace your self, cut straight at

the defender, so they back up more, then pop back out, this creates more space for a close out, which he can drive.

6. Must be a great foul shooter

Siena Press

Why we do it? To get turnovers and deflections plus to shorten the clock of the opponent.

“Once players get to their spots in the press, they must look away to find players in their area, always look away then find somebody.

On a quick throw ahead up the sideline, x2 and x3 take the angle and close the trap, take the middle away cut off any passes. If a man picks up his dribble, top man gets the ball, other two defenders deny their man.

Look away to see where the players are, if nobody is in your area, some body is coming, keep swiveling your head.

Guards must sprint to position so they cam cover, till the bigs get back.

Might need to to be more conservative with your bench in the game.

When the top guy is pickup the ball, it is up one step, back two steps, while going back, hands are up trying to get a deflection.

Guards can’t leave too early to get into the trap, their will be time, but must get bumped out.

On corner pass, whole baseline must rotate until bumped back down by a guard. (we bump out guards down to keep our bigs near the basket)

When getting beat up the sideline, x2 & x3 must sprint back to keep the ball out of the middle.

When you have a lead, make them take contested jumpers only, no fouls, keep them in front.

Page 42: Brad Greenberg- Radford University Quotescoachjacksonspages.com/Nike_Clinic_20098578.pdf · Brad Greenberg- Radford University Quotes: “ How do you make a guitar- get a good pile

When switching m2m if the point guard doesn’t give the ball up, must just match up and bigs don’t leave shooters.

Will be better if your safety is on the wing, rather than the top of the press, so they don’t have to cover much ground coming back up.

1-2-2 Press: X3, your best athlete, does a good job, getting deflections and steals X1,X2- work on a tandem, if one is out covering sideline, the other must cover the middle, on the swing of the ball, can't leave till the other partner is there, don't leave to early. X4, X5, work together on a tandem, one is up the other is back protecting.

1-2-2 Press: When teams break the press, fall back into 1-2-2 until pass to the corner. Wings take a pass to the corner, two posts go out until bumped back by the wing getting down to the corner- then stay in the 2-3 zone. By this time with the amount of time worked off the clock and switching into different zone, will leave the team with little time left on the

Phil Martelli- St. Joes (didn’t attend, couldn’t really read the notes well)

Good Defensive thoughts:

1. Must have constant ball pressure

2. Emphasis don’t foul

3. Pack up point on makes and misses, need to be consistent, keep offensive in front of the

defense

Page 48: Brad Greenberg- Radford University Quotescoachjacksonspages.com/Nike_Clinic_20098578.pdf · Brad Greenberg- Radford University Quotes: “ How do you make a guitar- get a good pile

4. Conversation from offensive and defense

5. Everybody wacks out, must rebound

6. Work the pass reciever

7. Emphasis no catch and shoot

8. Never foul the shooter

9. Push the ball to the outside

10. Close all gaps

11. Own the middle of the floor

12. Check how your players- stride on defense

13. Aggressive closeouts

14. How do you guard low post and ball screens

15. How do you guard the shooter- box and one mentality

Three things of post defense- 1) guarding the person in the post, 2) trap down, 3) trap on the

pass

Drills:

Command drill- 4 mins 1) stance and shuffle 2) push to baseline- work on these commands-

guard the shooter, guard the passer, take a charge, how to foul him x him, 5 seconds count,

steal the ball

1 on 1: keep him in front

3 on 3 full court- trace the ball, get to half court, trap the ball, how many times you touch the ball

is the winner

4 on 4 shell defense- how do teams you guard. That offense down for 30 seconds, shell defense

that is out, 30 seconds to get a score, off ball screens

Dino Gaudio- Wake Forest-(didn’t attend, couldn’t really read the notes well)

Quotes:

“kids can trust you, must show them that they can go to the coach.”

Post depth-comes down, and post up in the middle, get them in the lane. Head on the rim, head

up tail down, arms up.. The lower you are, the quicker and stronger you are.

V cut out to get into position, fork lifts go low with a pass-

Posts must have a drop step, ½ step above the box, and have a jump hook.
