NEWSFLASH

As a General Election approaches, it will be no surprise to seeeducation rise up the political agendas of all the political parties. There has been much talk of the ‘grey vote’ as the parties bid for thesupport of the nation’s senior citizens but, at the other end of theage scale, students and pupils will find themselves in the politicalspotlight.

At times like this, education is always a hot issue. The debate oftencentres on resources: is there enough money and how will it bespent? Resources are tight in education as elsewhere and thosewanting to spend money on, for example, technology projects willalways struggle to compete for resources while the debate remainsstuck on issues such as the sticky subject of the quality of schooldinners. However, technology is important in education and onecompany that knows that very well is Dell. That is why the companylaunched its initiative last year on the Intelligent Classroom.

The Intelligent Classroom: an issue and an attitude

The Intelligent Classroom is both a technology initiative and anattitude of mind. At its centre is the simple assumption thattechnology is a great enabler in education: that technology canmake learning more fun and interesting and much more effective. Most people would buy-in to that idea. The difficulty is thattechnology is often seen as the end rather than the means. It can bea mistake to think that arranging for pupils and students to haveaccess to desktop computers and laptops is enough to e-enable aschool or college. The Intelligent Classroom is built on the idea thatsimple access is not enough. Instead it is the proper implementationof technology that is important and more cost-effective.Technology’s great benefit if that it can make learning moreinteractive, fun and effective. And it doesn’t need to cost the earth.

Ultimately, Intelligent Classrooms can be the medium forcollaborative learning.

So what makes an Intelligent Classroom differ from one that hassimply been ‘technology enabled’, i.e. the kids and students all haveaccess to computers?

Intelligent classrooms bring together three elements:

1. The interdisciplinary nature of multi-media learning.

2. The increasing availability of online curriculum andeducational resources.

3. The Internet.

Combining presentation technology with personal computing, schools and colleges can move beyond the idea of using technologyto simply present information to a new concept – the fully interactivesystem. This interaction of students, teachers and technology allowsschools and colleges to create curricula that accommodate avariety of learning styles, such as visual, aural and kinesthetic. It thus makes it possible to connect the classroom with vastamounts of information, images and sounds.

The core: wireless networking and computer access

Wireless networking across the school or college along with ITaccess for pupils and students are the two basic foundations for theIntelligent Classroom along with the projector and screen. After that, the possibilities become almost endless. At the centre of IntelligentClassrooms is the projector and screen, which can be combinedwith a variety of technology options (see box on page 3).

The aim of combining these technologies is to extend the educationprocess to the benefit of both students and teachers. So how do youbring it all together? A plan is detailed here which shows many ofthe issues to be considered and it is important to consider all ofthem. To work effectively, the Intelligent Classroom has to beconsidered as much more than a combination of gadgets; it is ameans of stimulating learning and supporting teachers as they build

more dynamic curricula. One problem is the sheer diversity ofoptions.

To help you through this process you will find a lot of information onthe Dell website including a fully interactive, question and answersection that will help you to find out how ready your school orcollege is for the Intelligent Classroom. While it only takes a fewminutes, the guide is exhaustive and should help you identify theareas that you will need to focus on to make the most of the benefitsthe Intelligent Classroom can bring.

Just as it is important to get support, it is also important to rememberthat there is not shortage of help available. Apart from specialists, such as consultants and technology providers, who can assist youfrom concept through implementation, there is plenty of supportfrom professional and academic association. Such support can helpyou to establish a strong standing with management and facilitateyour involvement in both planning and design.

Getting the right support

In addition to providing high-quality technology at a low cost, DellProfessional Services (DPS) can help you build an intelligentclassroom from the ground up. DPS will work with you to assess andprioritise your school’s technology needs, and then help youintegrate new technologies into the actual classroom designs.

DPS offers complete services for both new classroom constructionand retro-fitting existing buildings, including:

1. Planning and design – Working with technical and non-technicalcustomers, DPS uses its expertise in enhancing the learningexperience through multi-media to identify the best solution foreach need.

2. Procurement, installation and configuration – Dell applies itsexpertise to implement a variety of curriculum-enhancingsolutions.

3. Training – Includes numerous Professional Development and“Train-the-Trainer” programs.

4. Maintenance and support – DPS helps you maintain and growyour Intelligent Classroom.

At a time when schools of all sizes and types face enormouspressure on resources it is easy to dismiss the idea of the IntelligentClassroom as idealised pie-in-the-sky. But if there is a key point totake away from this concept it is to remember that the IntelligentClassroom is not about spending piles of cash on IT. It is aboutmaking the IT you already have work better. This is really aboutintegration and imagination, combining the technology that youalready have in imaginative ways that will enhance the learningprocess. The Intelligent Classroom is about the intelligent use oftechnology in classrooms. And there are plenty of people to helpwith the process of making that happen.

Intelligent Classroom Technology Options In addition to your projector and screen, there are many components that can help you createan interactive, collaborative learning environment. This is not an exhaustive list and there aremany options, but not all of them are required in order to get started.

Wireless pads allow teachers to annotate and control presentations.

Interactive whiteboards enable notes to be documented and saved electronically. They can besent via email or stored on the network.

Polling applications let students respond instantly to questions supporting an interactive, dynamic lesson.

Document image cameras

Multimedia devices (i.e. DVD, VCR,) and TVs or LCD TVs enable teachers to share media withthe entire class.

Digital cameras and camcorders enable students to capture images and create dynamicpresentations they can share with their peers.

Personal and workgroup printers

Notebooks, desktops, handhelds, and tablet PCs connect students with teachers and otherstudents and enable their active participation in the learning process.

Twelve guidelines for building the Intelligent ClassroomYou must get ‘buy-in’ and as much input as possible from staff and students – They are the ones whowill use the technology to be implemented.

Keep it simple – Implement the technology you need but make it as easy to manage as possible.

Consider customisation options – Will you implement the same technology in each classroom, createa few types (tiers) of rooms, or customise each room for the specific needs it serves?

Make suitable provision for support – Do you have the staff needed to support the technology youwill implement? You don’t need a lot of extra staff but you do need to have the right technical back-upto smooth implementation.

Stay current – You should regularly review the quality and usefulness of your intelligent classrooms’tools and ensure that you stay up to date.

Stay informed – Staying up to date on the latest technology will help you to conduct realisticassessments of your equipment.

Make it flexible – Set up your technology so that it can support a variety of users and teaching styles.

Motivate interaction – Implemented properly, the Intelligent Classroom will facilitate collaborativelearning and create interaction between staff and pupils, and between pupils.

Make it user-friendly – Technology shouldn’t be rocket science. Make classroom technology simple, friendly and non-intimidating to encourage students at all levels to use it.

Broaden your connectivity – Create a room that supports a variety of different ways to connect byincluding telephone lines, TV distribution, and data connections.

The devil is in the details – Look at the variety of ways in which the technology will be used andexamine the details for each scenario.

Make sure that support and training are in place – Training and instruction should be easy to accessand understand and they should be ongoing. A successfully implemented Intelligent Classroom willcontinuously develop, building a repository of knowledge and experience.
