The Survey: Questions No. 1-2

Thanks so much for taking a moment to share your opinion in a quick survey on potential changes to the masters road racing categories.

To begin, we'd like to clarify a few definitions: "Categories" are based upon ability, are defined by USA Cycling, and are standard across the country: Category 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. "Race groups" are combinations of age and category,

and are offered by BRAC for local racing: e.g. Senior Men 35+ Cat 4; Senior Men 45+ 1, 2, 3, etc. This survey centers on discussion about "race groups.”

We have a proposal brought by three clubs -- RallySport Racing, Natural Grocers, and Rocky Mountain Cancer Center -- to change the options available to Masters Men in the 35+ race groups for the 2014 road season.

The proposal seeks to open the 35+_1, 2 race group to 35+_3 athletes. The new race group structure would be named 35+_1, 2, 3, and BRAC would also still offer a separate 35+_3. Under this proposal, these affected athletes would have additional flexibility in choosing in which group to race on a given day. Both of these groups would be included in the Rocky Mountain Road Cup, and athletes would earn points in the race groups in which they compete in those events that count toward the Cup competition.

The Pros:• Allows for better team-based racing in the 35+_1, 2, 3 race group.• Larger 35+_1, 2, 3 field size - offering a better race-day experience.• Adding 3's to the 35+_1, 2's allows the 3s to be mentored by the 1-2s during the race.• Having both 35+_3 and 35+_1, 2, 3 allows the 3s the ability to try out the faster group without blindly making the

upgrade.• Keeping 35+_3 as a Cup race group still allows for a reasonable group for newly upgraded racers (Cat.3), while

providing for a more open-style race experience in the 35+_1, 2, 3 race group. The Cons:• The 35+_3 racers would be the only group that has been given another masters race option within their age

bracket, creating a fairness issue.• Reduced field sizes and a decrease in skill level in the 35+_3 race group.• Potentially change the flow and pace of the category upgrade process (Cat 3's to Cat 2's).• Less experienced bike handlers in 35+_1, 2, 3 elite group.• Programming changes in our database for Cup points calculations.

1: Are you in favor of modifying the 35+_1, 2 to 35+_1, 2, 3 as per this proposal? The 35+_3 field would remain as a separate race group.

The Survey: Questions No. 3-7

A discussion topic that continually arises when reviewing race groups is the masters age ranges, and specifically the age at which BRAC starts Masters Race Groups. BRAC committees have considered a change to this starting age for Masters from 35 to 40. To help guide discussions for future decision making (2015 and beyond), we are seeking member input.
