BPC v10 MS Demo Landscape Creation Overview

Create a local Server that BPC will be installed on, containing a 64-bit Windows Server, SQL Enterprise Server,

and MS Office; this can be created in either:

• a virtual environment (PC: VMware Workstation or Mac: Parallels or Fusion)or

• a physical Intel platform installation

Download all needed SAP Software kits from the Service Marketplace

Extract all compressed kits into a folder structure which can be accessed by the target Server

Obtain product keys for all of the SAP Software products to be installed from Service Marketplace

(01200314692000001315 SBOP BI Platform 4.0 - Temporary Keys)

Install all needed kit components (typical installation time 1 to 8 hours)

NOTE: in this series

for BPC installation,

we will NOT be using

a BI server for any

validation.

Hardware Requirements

Faster is better and bigger is better and more is better!

Recommended needs for “usable” environment:

• Processor i7 quad core

• RAM 8 GB

• Disk space 96 GB

Minimum for “it will work but performance is challenging”

• Processor Core 2 Duo

• RAM 4 GB

• Disk space 48 GB



Software Requirements

Supported Windows Operating Systems:

BusinessObjects Enterprise server components only support 64-bit operating systems (this is not a

complete list of platform/connectivity services) which can be any version of the following types

Data Center Edition, Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, or Web Edition.



Other Licensed Software Needed

In order to follow along with this series of workshops and creating your own demolandscape, you will need to obtain installation kits (CDs or DVDs or Archive) and

***licenses***

• Microsoft Windows Server 64-bit

• Microsoft SQL Enterprise Server 2008 R2 64-bit• Microsoft Office 2007 Professional with SP2

Optional – only needed if creating a Virtual Machine

Step #0 – (Optional) Setting up a Virtual Machine

This step is only needed if you are setting up a Virtual Machine on Windows (VMware) or

Mac (Parallels or Fusion)

Begin by setting up a new Virtual Machine using VMWare Workstation on your PC or

VMware Fusion or Parallels on your Intel-based Mac.

General settings:

Allocate at least

4GB RAM to your

Virtual Machine

(more if you have

it) and 2 or more

CPUs




Parallel’s Configurations

Be sure to switch the boot

order to put “CD/DVD” before

the hard disk if you want to

install from that device.

Allocate enough RAM for

use by the video needs of

your new VM

environment.

During the installation

process, it makes sense to

have the CD/DVD connected

by default. For normal

operations I would clear this.




Parallel’s Configurations

The virtual Hard Disk is actually not pre-allocated to

the maximum size you specify. So it is usually“easiest” to actually allocate 128 GB – the actual disk

space used will remain as small as the current

content requires.

It is also easy to “expand” this size after you have an

operational Virtual Machine that runs out of space.

Using the “Shared Network”

tends to be the best andeasiest for most scenarios.

Machine

VMware offers the same basic

configuration options:

- Configure a disk – 64 GB min

- Enable “Bridged” or “NAT”

networking

- provide the OS via DVD or an .isofile from which to create the new

VM image.




VMware Image Configuration

Use the Virtual Machine Settings dialog box to

customize the virtual system’s devices andother options.

One vitally important step is to be sure that the

“VMware Tools” are installed into your virtual

machine! Especially handy for supporting

high-resolution video screens, and to allow

drag-n-drop and copy-n-paste between the

virtual machine and the host machine.

Also – be sure to enable “Shared Folders”

since that’s the easiest way to transfer files and

installation kits between the virtual and host

machine!




Some Optimization Tips for VM

VMware offers some advancedconfiguration options:

- Define the maximum allowable

RAM to be consumed by any (all)

running virtual machines

- Select the “Fit all virtual machine

memory into reserved host RAM”

option

This last option avoids having to swapvirtual OS and Application memory to

disk

First some “global” VMware settings – found under the top-

level menu: Edit Preferences…




Asking for too much RAM….

If your physical machine does not have enough free memory to meet the requested amount of memory

that your virtual machine wants, you get the following dialog box prompt:

Your choices are:

1) Reduce Memory – this will allocate the maximum RAM available.2) Do Nothing – this will “logically” allocate your image more RAM than is actually available, which

means you will be incurring swapping overhead and the performance will be degraded.

Note: this is also a good way to “catch” that your host computer is already running some memory-hog

application or another Virtual Machine.




Some Maintenance Tips for VM

An important maintenance step for VMware images that have been “used for awhile” is to Defragment that image.

Note that you can also “Expand…” if you need more space on the image or

“Compact” to minimize the physical disk space needed to store the virtual image.

While the “Updates” are being downloaded / installed there’s plenty of time to

change the COMPUTER NAME and WORKGROUP to “BI40GA” and “DEMO”respectively.

1. Set automatic logon for Administrator

• Click Start, Run and enter controluserpasswords2

• Clear the checkbox for Users must enter auser name and password to use this

computer and click Apply

• Enter the user name and password that will

be used for Autologon and click OK

NOTE: This is obviously not

recommended for any production

systems, but perfectly fine for a

controlled access demo landscape.

2. Disable “Display Shutdown Event Tracker” [via group policy editor]

• Click Start, type gpedit.msc

8. Also disable password expiration:

• Start Administrative Tools Local Security

Policy• then: Security Settings Account Policy

Maximum password age == 0




Check Windows Updates… again…
