I could feel the excitement coursing
through my body hours before I even
had to leave for the airport to meet up
with the rest of the team. We were all
going together in one body of Christ to
Dominican Republic. There were 29 of
us, in which 13 were non-adults, mean-
ing elementary, middle, high, and col-
lege. Only some of us were passable at
Spanish, myself included. However,
that did not stop us from readying
ourselves for a hard but fun and en-
lightening trip to the poor country of
Dominican Republic.
Our main theme was prayer. Even be-
fore the start of the trip, although we
practiced Spanish gospel songs and ba-
sic Spanish, the s and all the adults
emphasized that prayer was really the
only powerful tool we were taking on
that trip. Without prayer, we were pow-
erless to do anything for the people
of Dominican Republic. Personally, I
prayed for my attitude and the groups
health and efforts in helping out the
missionaries stationed there. I had
faith that God would use us in a way

pleasing to His eye, although later we found
out his plan for us was not for us to contrib-
ute greatly in aiding the missionaries with
physical work.
So with that mindset, we arrived in Do-
minican Republic at 11pm, and I was at once
blasted with warm, sticky Dominican air. I
had been expecting it, but was still repulsed
by the humidity, something I try to avoid at
all costs. But I had to think positively, and
honestly, the first positive thought that ven-
tured into my mind was hey, sweating helps
you lose weight. We were at once greeted
by a cluster of tall, dark, muscular Domini-
can church members. At once I noted how
friendly these people were to us, although
we were mere strangers. The group was
deadly tired, but the Dominican people in

the back of the bus were very cheerful, and
as soon as they started singing, even songs
that we had so diligently learned, we could
not resist the urge to sing along.
Over the next week, sweat and rain became
my best friends. But that did not stop me
from bonding with the other youth group
from Canada or the native Dominican Re-
publican people at the church. Each and ev-
ery day the one thing I could not help but
notice was how amazingly nice and friendly
the Dominicans were. It was definitely a les-
son I planned on learning throughout the
stay with them. If you broke the ice with a
simple hola, hello in Spanish, they would
immediately smile and say hello back. Every
smile charmed me and although I could not
remember all their names, they were very
patient in reminding me over and over.
One thing I must mention, the food was de-
licious. I could even say it was better than
some Ive tasted here in the United States.
And those who were serving the meals in-
sisted that we took and ate a lot! They were
almost insulted if we did not! It was real-
ly enlightening to see their desire to serve
on a constant basis. One time I came late
to lunch and a friend I had made called
me over as I got into line at the back and
pulled me over to the front and insisted I
receive the meal first. I was f lattered and
impressed at the same time. All of them

must have been incredibly hungry after a morn-
ing of hard work, but uniformly agreed I could,
no, should go before them. If I asked any one of
them for help, they were more than willing to
do so. While back home sometimes I would sulk
around grumbling inside about why I had to do
so much for others, they were so thankful for
so little, and even so, so willing to serve Christ
and their brothers and
sisters in Christ.
Water was a prob-
lem. The water supply
would run out very
quickly, and there were
29 of us and the Can-
ada group that needed
to shower at least every
day. This restricted us
to 2 minute showers
and sometimes the
water would not come
out. We were constantly filling up a huge black
bucket with water when the water did come out,
so we would be able to use the water later. In
the girls bathroom there was only one shower
stall with a curtain to share with the 15 girls of
our Bethany group and about 8 of the Canada
group. It was a good thing it poured every day,
because the Canada group was able to show us
how to put the rain to good use. At first, we were
reluctant to try it, but one by one we ventured
out into the rain and reveled in the cold, refresh-
ing water streaming from the pipes overhead.

OCTOBER / 28
It was great fun and everyone got a freezing
rain-shower. It became a daily routine.
We visited various churches that were a sort of
extension of the main church we were staying
at, and had a chance to view the streets and the
normal life of the Dominican Republicans.
What I saw while out in the streets rendered
me speechless. Naked children playing in the
streets of mud and trash, stopping to stare at
the strange group of Asians making their way
toward them, tin houses not even the size of
a US single house living room, the unbeliev-
able amount of trash. We are truly spoiled.
I realized that moment that there cannot be
a country more spoiled than us. Watching a
child smile radiantly upon receiving a single
piece of candy made my heart ache. They are
so thankful, for so little.
I was also able to experience the power of
prayer and Gods miracle through a near-death
experience. Due to another rainy day, we de-
cided to go to the market. It had continued to
rain very hard while we were admiring all the
goods of the Dominican Republic, and on the
way back to the church, the rain never ceased.
Then suddenly the bus lurched forward and
I glanced out the window. The first thought
that came to mind was Why are we driving
straight into a river?! and later found out that
it was actually a road, so f looded with rain that
it had created a river. Thoughts of death did
not enter my mind at the moment, but later

I realized that we had been truly stuck.
The engine was smoking the wheels
were turning but we werent going any-
where. The bus was slowly starting to tilt
but the f low of the water was only getting
stronger. Then suddenly the bus lurched
forward and as I
looked back I could
see a large red truck
behind us that had
pushed the bus out.
Relief f looded me
as we safely crossed
to the other side.
God had sent his
angels to save all of
us. It was the first
miracle I ever expe-
rienced.
Due to daily downpours, we were only
able to help out with VBS and evange-
lizing on the first day, but that did not
hinder our growing relationships with
the Dominicans. As the Canada group
expressed to us, it was strange that as
soon as we arrived in Dominican Re-
public, it started raining non-stop. Every
day we woke up before the sun did to the
sound of rain pounding on the roof of
our dorm, and got soaked running to the
sanctuary for early morning prayer, most
of us still half asleep. Confined by the
heavy rain, we could not go out and do

activities every day as we planned to, but in
the end we concluded that this was not some-
thing God had planned for us. Every time the
rain ceased, we would prepare ourselves to
go out and recruit the local kids, but a heavy
downpour would catch us while we were still
on the streets. But because of this, we were
able to spend so much more time with the
Dominicans helping out at the church we
were staying at, and were able to learn about
their lifestyles and beliefs and interests.
I believe God intended us to learn and grow
from what we observed more than focus on
doing VBS. I felt like He was telling us that
we cannot help unless we know and can em-
pathize. During the last worship, my eyes
were finally opened and I was awed to see
how God was working among the Domini-
can Republic people. Perhaps next year if He
gives us the wonderful chance to reach out to
the Dominican Republicans once again, we
may be able to do much more. Whether we go
or not, this mission trip was greatly enlight-
ening and opened my eyes to so many more
aspects of peoples lives around the world. I
am so thankful to the pastor working there,
the Canada group that helped us adjust, and
the such welcoming Dominican Republicans
we worked with for making this such a suc-
cessful mission trip, although we did not do
much physically. I am especially thankful to
God for such a blessed and wonderful oppor-
tunity.

OCTOBER / 31 MAY / 31
I came into the Wisconsin mission trip with no
idea what to expect, only an eager heart to go
somewhere different. Honestly, I had no idea
what was going on during the months after I
signed up, but I didnt really mind. But because
my friends who were going to other missions
trips were training everyday early in the morn-
ing during summer while I felt like our church
was all last minute, I had a feeling that this
wasnt that big of a deal.
But I was pleasantly surprised from the very
first sending off service. I was brought to tears
that night as God reminded me that passion
was still alive among the youth, as all 300 of
them unashamedly worshipped God with no
restraint. The DC metropolitan area has been
plagued with complacency and indifference
for God and its been a difficult fight trying to
maintain passion myself. I was truly humbled
as God showed me that He is bigger than the
air I breathe in Maryland.
The day before leaving Maryland, I remember
checking weather.com as I was deciding what
clothes to pack. It said that Red Cliff, WI will
have cold thunderstorms Monday-Wednesday.
So I shrugged and packed some sweats and
a jacket. However, on the bus, men-
tioned during our prayer time that rain will

ruin our activities, so we prayed for the rain to
stop. And praise God, because we had beauti-
ful weather the whole time we were there. This
was one thing I was blessed with this mission:
the power of prayer. Ive honestly never seen a
youth this size all earnestly praying out with no
embarrassment; I was so humbled and encour-
aged to continue a sincere prayer life.
When we got to Red Cliff, the nearly untouched
forests and glimmering lake captivated my
eyes and I was in awe of Gods creation. The
more and more we toured the reservation, the
better I could picture the injustice and heart-
break these Native Americans must have gone
through all those years ago.
These people who especially marveled at the
beauty of creation, more than any of us, knew
how to appreciate nature and their land only to
be slaughtered away from it. Its so ironic how
a nation that worships freedom and indepen-
dence put these people in boxes and stripped
them from their liberty and identity. Thats why
it broke my heart when I met the kids there in
Red Cliff. In the midst of this unthinkable his-
tory, they were so lively with such pure eyes.
Their roots and heritages were ripped out and
identities broken, yet they were so willing to
love us and be our friends. My heart broke for
them as so many of them told me they had more
than 5 siblings from different parents. My heart
broke when I saw the lost eyes among some of
the older Native Americans. Even with Christ,
even with an identity, I had a hard time figur-
ing out my purpose in the world. I could only

imagine the pain of having no root to cling to
and always searching to find something worth
living for. God gave me this heart to serve and
reach out to them. It is so unjust that these an-
glo saxon Europeans came and trampled on
the Natives lands in the name of our God and
forced them to convert to Christianity.
During our first worship in Chicago, God
gave me a vision. Whenever I closed my eyes
I saw hundreds of wide open hands reaching
and waving upwards that turned into waving
branches. I continually saw this throughout the
week. Those hands were those of Native Ameri-
cans reaching for something in their lives but
through God their uprooted identities will be
rooted in Christ as He will be the vine and they
his branches.
I was so blessed when I heard that girls tes-
timony of Isaiah 61 because this is our vision
(paraphrased): The Lord has anointed me to
bestow on them the oil of gladness instead of
mourning, the garment of praise instead of a
spirit of despairThey will rebuild the ancient
ruins and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities that have
been devastated for generations. Aliens will
shepherd your flocks; foreigners will work your
fields and vineyards. Amen. And we will be
the foreigners who work Gods vineyards and
root them to Christ.
I think during this missions I received more
than I gave and I hope that I will bring the mis-
sion field back home and continually live as
Gods missionary.
