Fans,Welcome to another installment of College Stories You Would Never Tell Your Parents.

Oh wait, just kidding. Aside from a few tweets from followers claiming they had some great stories, no one hasactually sent one in for this issue. Maybe we need to do a better job of promoting,

SEND US YOUR STORIES! Maybe no one read the pom girl issue where I introduced the idea of using this space to share some of

your wildly entertaining stories. I have since realized I didnt ask for more stories in the last issue. My sincereapologies. All stories will remain anonymous, of course. You can submit them on our website if you dont feelcomfortable using your personal email address. I know you have a million stories that would t the de nition,so please dont be afraid to share them with us. Youre probably saving your best stories for College Humor, buthey, lets keep a few of them circulating around the local scene. Maybe its just me, but I feel like the storieshave a little something extra when you know they came from readers right here in Norman.

I generally try to stay out of political issues withwhat I write, mostly because its not usuallyrelevant, but I think a stance needs to be takenregarding these bills. The House of Represen-

tatives Stop Online Piracy Act(SOPA) and the Senates corre-sponding bill, the Protect IP Act(PIPA) were designed by theirarchitects, Rep. Lamar Smith(R-TX) and Sen. Patrick Leahy(D-VT) respectively, to give thegovernment and copyright hold-ers the capability to block rogue

websites dedicated to infringingor counterfeit goods, particular-ly rogue pirate sites that havea domain name based outsidethe U.S.

In theory, this is a reasonableintent, but in practice, it couldbe incredibly crippling to theInternet, as any user-generatedcontent that could potentiallyviolate these acts could resultin legal action, for the user thatposted the content, the user thataccessed it and even the website that was used topost said content. Under current wording in thebills, a single complaint by the copyright holderagainst a site could potentially be enough to blockthe actual site; say, for example, a blog post con-taining one piece of copyrighted material couldpotentially cause the entire site to be shut down.Search engines such as Google could be requiredto remove any o ending site from being accessedvia their search engine, and sites like Twitter, Face-book and Reddit could be barred from linking anycontent with a blocked domain name.

Many of the major Internet sites opposed toSOPA and PIPA are in favor of some form of anti-pi-racy legislation, but think that these laws are toobroad. In a joint letter to Congress, Facebook, Twit-ter, Google, AOL, LinkedIn, Mozilla, eBay, Zyngaand Yahoo all voiced their concerns about the bills:... the bills as drafted would expose law-abidingU.S. Internet and technology companies to newuncertain liabilities, private rights of action, andtechnology mandates that would require moni-

toring of web sites. We are concerned that thesemeasures pose a serious risk to our industrys con-tinued track record of innovation and job-creation,as well as to our Nations cybersecurity. Other sites

are protesting in their own ways: on Wednesday,January 18, Wikipedia went black, blocking directaccess to the site (although giving instructions toaccess the site by other methods) and providingcontact information to users local Congressmenand Senators. Wired put black bars over most of their online content (that disappeared when hov-ering the mouse over it), and Matthew Inman, theguy who runs The Oatmeal, went black and put upan amusing GIF and described SOPA and PIPA inthis way: This is like dealing with a lion that hasescaped from the zoo by blasting some kittenswith a amethrower.

Opposition isnt just limited to the Internetrealm, though: fty- ve of Americas most suc-cessful venture capitalists and 204 entrepreneurssent their own petitions to Congress, saying thatthese bills pose a serious risk to our industryscontinued track record of innovation and job-cre-ation, and would hurt economic growth and chillinnovation. Even in the political world itself, thereis bipartisan opposition to match its bipartisan

support, with the opposition spectrum rangingfrom President Obama and his White House sta to Republican representative and presidentialcandidate Ron Paul, from House Minority Leader

Nancy Pelosi to Republican Sena-tor Scott Brown and several otherkey gures in the Tea Party. Mostof these bills support comes fromthe MPAA, RIAA and other enter-tainment industry lobbies, as wellas the politicians funded by them.

The greatest aw with the bill, however, is that it isnt going to

work. Sites that deal in piratedcontent are just going to changetheir web and IP addresses andgo right back to their craft, whilewebsites that these get postedon and their users pay the pricethrough no fault of their own.Asking Facebook and Twitter topolice every link on their site isfunctionally impossible, given thesheer scale of these sites.

If these bills pass, there could bea dangerous precedent set here.

Fighting online piracy is one thing, but the scopeof these bills is far too broad; there needs to besigni cant modi cation to the bills, if they shouldeven exist at all.

To our readers: heres the contact in ormation orOklahomas U.S. Senators and the Norman areasrepresentative to the House, Tom Cole. If you haveany thoughts on SOPA and PIPA that you thinkour elected o cials should hear, let them know.We put them in o ce to serve our interests, letsmake sure they know what those are regardingthe Internet.

    Web 3.0 by AJLansdale

    >> Its back ... mostly. Even though EA still has exclusive ownership of the NFL license, its nallytime for some funny, simplistic, overly hard-hitting football with your favorite teams. Its still turbo-heavy, and you can make hits that you wouldnt otherwise be able to do in Madden. No penalties, but there are still rules: no jumping on top of the QB after a sack like in the oldBlitz . Celebrations areback at least. Its a nice, simple football game which makes a good change of pace from Madden, and its only $15. If you liked the old Midway versions of Blitz , youll like the simplicity here, and itsfun, but it doesnt quite feel like the same old game we all miss.

A ew thoughts rom our local music scene supporters.

    Independent Oklahoma UprisA RenaissanceL

ast year may not have been the year for Sooner foot-ball, but it was a good year for just about everythingelse from, in or out of Oklahoma. And Im not just talk-ing about the Thunder.

Now, if you know anything about Mel Guapo, its that I ama super fan of the Oklahoma music scene. And if you dontknow already, let me be the rst to tell you: the Oklahomaindie music scene is experiencing a renaissance the likes of which hasnt been seen since the days of The Flaming Lips,Chainsaw Kittens and Starlight Mints. The amount and caliber of good music coming out of ourstate is exhilarating (if not overwhelming) and a great dealof that music is being given increasingly more national at-tention. And its not just one scene alone that can boast suc-cess. Tulsa, Stillwater and Norman herself are each home tobands that drew signi cant attention in 2011.J.D. McPherson Signs & Signifers

McPherson hails fromTulsa/Broken Arrow. His debutrecord was released in late 2010 and it continues to gain at-tention more than a year later. >> Are youlooking for lovein all the wrong

    places?

    by ElizabethAtherton

Where to start? Lets just start o with this: those of you in a relationship that lacks value ... get out of it. Now, I dont know what kind o person you areor if you even value a thing like... uh, value. For all

I know, you could be nice. You could be spoiled. You could besel sh. I dont know you. But I do know that many of you look-ing for love ... are looking in all the wrong places. How do I know? Cause Ive been there. Believe me, Ive

checked that corner. Ive looked under that rock, chased afterthat rainbow and opened that door only to be found empty-handed and, to say in the least, exhausted and in desperateneed o water.I think its safe to say everyone loves the chase. Its nature,

right? You might love that girl who always blows you o . Theone who puts you in your place, the one girl who is sexy andirty and oh-my-gosh could she get hotter? That girl. You loveher. Or you think you could love her, if she would only hangout with you.Or maybe you love that guy. The guy who is charming and

slick and just bought your drink again this weekend. You lovehim ... or at least you think you could. If only ... if only ... Or,He will do this eventually ... he will ... Right? After all isntthis whole love thing supposed to play out like a cheap JamesBond movie? Vodka stirred, an enemy attraction, a love af-fair like magnets meeting for the rst time. Mmm, time out,Sparky. For my points sake, picture me as a rock. I just dropped from

the sky, landed right next to you, blew up a cloud of dust andlooked at you (like rocks do) right in the eye and said, Sorry tobe the bearer of bad news, not only are you talking to a rock, but youre doing the wrong thing broseph. Ya got the wrong

idea about what exactly love, in every meaning of the word, really is.Now, I dont know. I mightve just rocked your world -- after

all it is 2012 now, things are supposed to happen. But thisarticle is inspired mainly by the fact that its sad to watch a y-ing-single lovebird-hopeful be shot down and disappointedover and over again. Only because I was once the most hope-ful of them all, (in all the wrong ways) I get it.Truth be told, its easier to nd the kind of love where the

chase is involved. It gives you reasons to back out, reasonsto ake, time to decide, a goal to attain and entertainment. That kind of love is easy to quit -- even when you catch up tothe person youve chased. In this kind of chasing love, I rmlybelieve that if the two parties involved truly paid attentionto the signs and honestly confronted the fact that it wasntgoing to happen, and their story probably wasnt going tocome around as originally planned, it would mean the gamewas over. And who wants to end the game? All that would beleft would be two people sitting across a game board staringat each other; theyd be left with just themselves, no distrac-tions or excuses -- worse than a dinner date. Theyd have tocut through the crud and be honest with each other.Really, over the empty game board, the only question the

two parties would have to ask each other would be, Do youlike me? If the answer is no, nd someone who does. If theanswer is yes, leave it alone. And as time goes on the samequestion can be turned into, Do you still like me? And thennally, Will you always?

    >> Who doesnt love Drew ... or whales?

Picture Leonardo DiCaprio. Envision him in your mind.Im willing to bet that you thought of him in eitherInceptionorTitanic . I Im wrong and youre more o a Growing Painskind o person, then remind me to

give you a nickel next time I see you. Regardless, all three of those are roles that are completely di erent from one an-other. In his early days, DiCaprio was playingwell, what-ever he could get that would t. Then he turned into a teen-aged heartthrob in the late 90s, and these days, nearingmiddle age, he is playing the serious, haunted leading man.

Hollywood, it seems, is being kind to older actors thesedays. DiCaprio is not the only example. Tom Hanks has hada similar career: no longer playing the romantic comedyleads against Meg Ryan, Meg Ryan and Meg Ryan, he hasbeenand is stillplaying serious roles in every genre.Hes even co-starring in a lm coming out this month (lookto your right).

This isnt a particularly new phenomenon. Leading menof the past like Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart also landedslightly more serious roles when they were older. Women, too, have had long-lasting and varied careers. Think aboutKatherine Hepburn inBringing Up Baby , and then try to putthat character intoLong Days Journey Into Night , in whichshes driven by a severe drug addiction. These movies mightlook the same to some young folks because theyre shot in

black and white and their strongest language is blast, buttheyre drastically di erent.

Of course, not every actor or actress is lucky enough tohave a 30-year career, and not all of them play more seriousroles when they get older. Michael Caine, who seems to bethe new 60+ darling of Hollywood, probably never wouldhave played the amboyant Victor from Miss Congeniality inhis younger days, and even his Alfred fromThe Dark Knight is light in comparison to the other characters in the movie.

The question, then, is what will happen to the men andwomen who are now getting their shot at serious roles? Will their characters need more and more past to be tor-tured by as they continue to play tormented roles until theirretirement? Will they turn into Michael Caines as they driftto the background of lms? Or will they end up, like someolder actors, voicing cartoons?

The fact that actors have long and varied careers is notparticularly surprising, nor is it unusual. But it does meanthat unless they turn out to be a second George Clooney, those we consider to be heartthrobs now may be wearingglasses and sporting businessman bellies in a few years(sorry, Ryan Gosling). Who do you think will be runningthrough dreams within dreams soon?

Television is full of bad guys working for good, andDextermay be the latest installment of them. Dexter Morgan isa police forensics expert, working in labs to discover who committed the crimes he investigates. Unlike most crimeshows, though, Dexter has another side: he is a serial killer himself. Using his forensics expertise to cover his tracks, heseeks out those he considers immoral and kills them. Often his victims are killers themselves, so the show is rooted in

an ironic sense of justice. The camera work follows this irony, often distorting common objects or activities so that they appeargraphic or terrifying. The show is currently in its seventh season on Showtime.

    >> Joe is quite the ladies man.

Ive had a pretty storied college career. Scholasticallyspeaking, though I dominated some tests in my day,I probably wont be winning any awards. After a fewyears, I came to realize my strengths and weaknesses.

Speaking in extremes I was a pretty balanced scholar be-cause I was pretty good at the partying part and the study-ing left something to be desired.

Unfortunately, it took me a long time to find that per-fect balance between work and fun. Actually, more than ahandful of people might say I havent found it yet, but asthey say, hakuna matata. Life can become a chore if youdont let your hair down every once in awhile (first-worldproblems, baby!).

Benjamin Franklin may or may not have once said (de-pending on which scholar you choose to trust on thiscomplete non-issue), Beer is proof that God loves us andwants us to be happy. I dont care what your religiousbeliefs are but thats an idea whos spirit we can all getbehind. Otherwise, save your arguments for the opinionpage. Or at the very least, the next time youre drunk andwant to spend an hour banging your head against a wall, whichever comes first. That said, welcome to part two of Bacons Campus Corner reality drinking tour!

This time, were journeying to the northern reaches of The Corner. Conveniently located across from the recentlyre-opened Othellos is one of the last bastions of the Cam-pus Corner I knew as a younger man, Joes Taverna (LibertyDs? Quarter House? Malones? Red Dirt? Anyone?).

As someone whos been drinking at Joes since some of you were in middle school (dont worry, some of my fa-vorite Joes regulars can say the same thing to me), I canconfidently say it hasnt changed much over the years, andthats a good thing.

Joes, kind of like the Deli, is a bar that I always feel likeI can walk into, even when its been awhile since my lastappearance, and not miss a beat. Even on busy nights, italways has a fun, inviting atmosphere. Speaking of which,Joes somehow toes the line between fun and laid-back in

a fashion that many a bar could envy. It just seems likeeveryone is on the same page.

A big reason for this is probably Joe himself being there.I dare say you wont meet a more relaxed individual inyour life. On most nights you can walk in and Joe will bethere with a hello and a handshake. Its a trait that, unfor-tunately, is increasingly lost in world full of chain storesand the Wal-Mart. Theres just something to be said for abusiness owner actually being around mingling with thecustomers.

How are the drinks? You might be asking. Just like Ilike them, strong and delicious. As we continue throughmy bar-hopping adventures, you might notice that I tendto order a lot of the same drinks. However, I have specificdrinks that I usually keep to certain bars, for no particularreason.

For me, drinking at Joes is about pounding gin and ton-ics. I couldnt really tell you why, thats just the way itwent down. If I had to guess its probably because he hasone of the first bars that stocked the Tanqueray Rangpurwhen it came into the state. Joes is also one of the onlybars around here that stocks Bohemia beer, which is oneof the more underrated Mexican beers out there if yourelooking for some suds. If youre in the mood for somethingtop shelf, give one of Joes favorites, the Wild Turkey RareBreed a try.

If you want some variety, there are generally rotatingspecials of the beer and liquor variety to keep things inter-esting. Theyre a bit more adventurous than just a whiskeyand coke or something like that too. I have fond memoriesof the Woodford Reserve special he ran a few years ago.Currently, his liquor special is the Oak and Coke. Youmight not have heard much about the recently releasedBacardi Oakheart, but you will soon because its spectacu-lar, and this comes from someone that doesnt particularlycare for spiced rum. Head on into Joes and do yourself afavor by trying one or six. Well see you at the bar!
