    Case StudyEmma Salih - Norwich

Emma Salih choose to study beauty therapy and loved it. She surprised herself for,

although very nervous when it came to assessments and exams, she passed and

gained her qualifications with flying colours.

Emma continues: I wanted to use my beauty therapy skills to create a livelihood but

I also knew that I did not want to work for someone else. I desperately wanted to be

my own boss and show my daughter that one can prosper through hard work. It wasso frustrating that there was no personal money to realise my dream and the banks

would have laughed at my credit history.

Determined, Emma decided to complete a course with The Princes Trust and they

offered her a loan of 3,000. This allowed her to set up shop, using her spare room

    at home and on occasions, provide a mobile service. But this was not enough;

My partner works away and sometimes gets home late so being able to use our car

was often in doubt. I needed my own transport in order to offer a reliable service. I

was told about Foundation East delivering the national Start-Up Loans scheme and

decided to apply. Although their application documents are a bit daunting, I was .

    Bowthorpe Litter Pick

The litter pick was held on Saturday 1st December apre Christmas clean-up. There was only a small groupof us meeting outside Roys where we collected litter

pickers and refuse sacks. It was bitterly cold with a little sleet in theair.

We began our task near the workshops by the church ruin andworked our way along the length of Cricket Way. Despite the coldwe all warmed to the task and were soon filling a number of refusesacks. All sorts of rubbish was collected, much of it recyclable. It isa pity that those who discarded it didnt carry it just a little furtherhome and put it in their blue recycle bin.

We met many people along the way who expressed theirappreciation. A number of these said that they didnt knowwe were holding the event as they would have liked to joinin. Some residents have since emailed me saying thesame. It is good that local people are civic minded.

We will give better publicity for the next event, in Bowthorpe News,

in Roys and on-line on Streetwise (a local news service by Archant

    Press).

In an ideal world we would prefer that this rubbish was notdiscarded, or that it was picked up more often by paid City Councilcollectors. However we all know that City Council is operating undertight budget restrictions due to Cuts.

The Litter Pick is no bad thing. It gives us all a bit of welcome

exercise, we meet neighbours and other community members andallows us to give something to our community at no cost other thanabout 90 minutes of sociable activity.

If you would like to become more involved do keep your eye openfor notice of our next event or email me [email protected]

Thanks to all who gave their encouragement

    and positive comments.

    Cllr Mike Sands

Well blimey its been cold lately! Its been a busy timeof the year down at the allotment for me with thecollecting of manure for digging in. This brought up aninteresting find, with two young smooth newts hiding

within the horse muck, which was steaming from the heat being given offwith the decomposition of the muck. This is surely good news as it indicatesthat at least some of the smooth newts must have successfully bred downat the marshes last year. Of course I didnt take all the muck, as to ensurethat there is still some suitable refuge for them to hibernate in.

While the newts over- winter, the foxes are still active all around Bowthorpeincluding the top fields near Bunkers Hill, where I was able to identify anactive fox den, because of the prints they left in the snow! Although, I mustsay it was their distinctive smell that first grabbed my attention! The fact thefox is using an underground den, means the fox, the vixen in this case, isgetting ready to have her cubs! It is really the only time of the year when afox will consistently go underground, as she needs to secure a good placeto offer protection from predators and the elements for her young ones.

While above ground a number of people have recently seen one of ourregular winter visitors. The waxwing has been spotted along Dodderman

Way, in Mardle Close and on Chapel Break Road. Although I am still yet tosee them in Bowthorpe, which probably means they are more irregular thanregular! Although, I saw a small flock at UEA a couple of years back whichwas a sight to behold. This small plumpstarling-sized bird migrates from northernScandinavia and Russia when their foodresources diminish, and forces them tomove onto richer grounds, such as to theeast coast of the UK. Here they first are

found on the coastline, and as they searchfor food, they move inland in pursuit ofberries, including them of hawthorn bushes, which we have many of on the highergrounds of the marshes. So take a walk andlook for these brightly coloured quirky birds, which are very distinct, and unlike any otherbirds we have in the UK.

As always you can contact me with your findings or queries via email [email protected]

    mister?

Unfortunately right when Im playing Twister

    Then I get rude

Because Im in a bad mood.

    Thats how every day goes

Wriggle my fingers, wriggle my toes,

Thats what every day I really do,

I walk to my Mum and say I love you!

    Remembering and forgetting,

And my mum does something people are not letting,

What am I say? Oh its gibberish,

    Not really, its actually English,

    But in a weird way.

    I really must say.

    Aminah Abdul Rahim

    St Augustines RC Primary School

This poem was included in a Young Writers Anthology

last Autumn. The author lives in Bowthorpe and is age 9 years.

    Memory

    What did I do today?

Oh, I forgot right in midday.

    Great! No surprise.

    I always forget before sunrise

That I forgot what I forgot.

My mum, my dad, everyone I met,

How did I remember all that?

When I didnt even know the colours of my hat!

    For I didnt have memory

    I couldnt have had,

But now I do its all I have.

I dont know how to speak English

    For I only speak gibberish,

    Bibbly boo, babbly baa!

    Woosghy booshy, ha, ha, ha!

I dont know how to even do simple mathsAnd in school my teacher gets in wrath.

She would say, Whats the matter with you
