A BRIEF HISTORYBowral Golf Club was established in 1901. Initially, it had no playing area of its own and for the first two years members of the new club played by invitation on a private nine-hole course owned by Mr. C. J. Royle, one of the foundation members. After this, play moved to a large area of land opposite the Bowral hospital, part of this land now being occupied by Bradman Oval.

The next site for Bowral Golf Club was on the west side of the railway line. It was a nine-hole course with sand greens on the Merilbah Estate near the Gibraltar Hotel.

The club was advised in 1915 that the lease on this land would come to an end. While many clubs might have viewed this as a crisis, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as ultimately it brought Bowral to its present home.

In mid-1917 an area of 36 acres on Kangaloon Rd was purchased from Edwin Boardman and a new clubhouse was completed on this land in June 1919. A nine-hole course was laid out by Club Professional Dan Soutar.

In 1920 members were advised that a further 49 acres of land had been acquired to extend the course to 18 holes. The additional layout was designed by Carnegie Clark. In 1950 a further 5.7 acres was acquired and was used for the present 15th hole.

The categories of membership established at the inaugural meeting say a lot about the club and its founders. From the outset, women members were welcomed at the club.

The club’s first professional was Sandy Yeoman, a Scotsman. But the longest tenured and surely the one to have most impact on the club was Hastings Clark.

THE COURSEHis father Carnegie Clark, then the professional at Royal Sydney, was well known to many Bowral members. Hastings may not have been so well known when he took up his appointment on 18 June 1934, aged 23 years. But by the time he retired, in July 1982 after a record stint of 48 years’ service to Bowral, it is fair to say he was a club institution!

The club has continued to invest and upgrade its facilities over the years. Major works were carried out on drainage, tree planting, and improvement of tees, fairway shaping and renovation just before the turn of the century.

A major improvement came about in 2001, when at a cost of just less than half a million dollars, the course was fully irrigated. A new bore was sunk near the 15th hole and pumps into the dam. The system at the time was state of the art and as a result the presentation of the course is superb.

The club celebrated its centenary in 2001, holding a number of functions throughout the year. Now, well into its second century, it is regarded just as fondly by the local New South Wales golfing community as it ever has been.

An advertisement placed by the club in the magazine Golf Australia in the 1950s stated “Come to Bowral for Exhilarating Golf”. That invitation is equally applicable today. Much may have changed over the years, but the one constant has and always will be the warmth and genuine nature of a Bowral welcome.

Any club is only as good as its course and Bowral Golf Club is fortunate that it has a real gem that will delight everyone from the experienced golf professional to the casual player.

Wonderful avenues of exotic old English and native trees border the fairways of a mature, traditional layout that is much loved and regarded among the best country courses in the whole of New South Wales.

The par-69 layout for men stretches to 5,406 metres off the men’s tees and has a slope rating of 121. It features two par-3s and one par-5 on the outward nine and three par-3s and one par-5 coming home. Women enjoy a no-less-invigorating 5,074-metre par-70 challenge off the red tees, playing the toughest par-4 on the course for the men, the 5th, as a par-5.

While the course is not overly long and there are some drivable par-4s (depending on which way the wind happens to be blowing) and some par-5s are reachable in two, that doesn’t make it easy. Payback comes the nearer the green you get because it’s not just the repetitive test you find on so many courses of hit the middle of the green, two-putt and move on.

Rather than being mundane, Bowral offers something out of the ordinary, but in a good way. It exercises the grey matter, rewarding those with skill and imagination and calls on the golfer to use their full repertoire of shots. Here you have to factor in the slopes and hit a particular side of the flag, or find yourself left with some difficult putts. It’s exactly the same just off the green, with a variety of tests being posed and choices offered.

TOUR THE COURSEThe course has always been highly regarded and it invariably looks a picture, the immaculate presentation a tribute to the painstaking work of our Course Superintendent and his dedicated team of greenkeeping staff. It is playable all year round.

We are immensely proud of our course, and we are not alone. First-time visitors often remark about the best fairways in the highlands and evenly-paced and true-rolling nature of the greens, which are a delight to putt on.

Has it stood the test of time? You bet! Modern technology has yet to find a way to tame the traditional course where ability to control ball flight and a vivid imagination triumph over being able to hit it prodigious distances.

Proof of this can be seen when some of the best golfers in the state come here to contest our prestigious Jubilee Cup Vardon event. Few, if any, find they are able to shoot better than par. A course record of just three-under-par tells you all you need to know: an invigorating challenge awaits players of all levels.

Even on days when the bounces are not being kind or the putts refuse to drop, there is the beauty of one’s natural surroundings to savour and the clubhouse welcome to look forward to. Most of all, there is the desire to come back and do it all again. Because tomorrow’s challenge will be something entirely new again.

We hope you enjoy your time with us at Bowral Golf Club. Here are a few useful tips and course notes which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited us before. Distances shown are from the men’s tees.

Hole 1, 314 metres, par 4The longer hitters can go for a 250-metre carry over water, though mere mortals are advised to lay up. The green slopes away on all sides.

Hole 2, 348 metres, par 4No easy start here, as another daunting tee shot presents itself, with a 240-metre carry over water at the longest point. Or you can lay up to about 180 metres, which will leave a long second shot to try and find the green. If you are going to miss the green, make sure you come up short or you will be left with a difficult chip to save your par.

Hole 3, 363 metres, par 4Dogleg left to right. A good tee shot of about 230 metres should leave you with a short iron into the green. The longer hitters can carry over the hill and leave themselves with a pitch into the green.

Hole 4, 200 metres, par 3One of the toughest holes on the course. At 200 metres uphill and the wind to contend with as well, it’s a very difficult (and sloping) green to hit for even the best of players. Par is a very good result here.

Hole 5, 393 metres, par 4Index one on the card, and with good reason. A long but tight par four, dogleg left to right. The approach is into a narrow green with a bunker on the left. The gum trees overhanging the green do come into play, so make sure you take enough club with your approach.

Hole 6, 174 metres, par 3Downhill par 3. The narrow green is protected by heavy rough. There are subtle undulations in the putting surface. Again, if you’re going to miss the green, miss it short. Long or left is hazardous to your scorecard!

Hole 7, 306 metres, par 4There is the option to lay up 180 metres off the tee. The ideal shot is a draw off the tee to leave a straight shot for your approach. The longer hitters can go for the green, but the risk is greater than the reward as this brings the out of bounds down the right into play, as well as the bunker short of the green.

Hole 8, 499 metres, par 5Long par 5, with a narrow fairway protected by lush rough. If you miss the fairway off the tee it limits your chance of going for the green in two. The average golfer will play it as a three-shotter at least. Miss the raised green and again you will do well to get up and down for par.

Hole 9, 328 metres, par 4Straightaway par four. You’re dead if you go right, as you’re out of bounds in the graveyard! Distance control with your approach is key into the small green.

Hole 10, 425 metres, par 5Dogleg right to left. The longer hitters can take on the corner and leave themselves with a shot to the green, providing they can hit it over 250 metres on the correct line. If you don’t leave your tee shot in the right place it becomes a three-shot hole, as it is for all normal players. It’s a newer green, so a bit larger and easier to hit, but is guarded by a couple of bunkers.

Hole 11, 152 metres, par 3Very good par 3 with a bunker short right. It’s a generous green, but because of the undulations around it and the rough, it makes it tricky to get it up and down for par if you fail to find the putting surface.

Hole 12, 189 metres, par 3A second consecutive par three requiring accuracy off the tee. Trees either side mean the golfer has a tight chute through which to thread his tee shot. The green is small and surrounded by rough. Par is a good score here.

Hole 13, 258 metres, par 4Longer hitters can take on the water and try to hit the green to leave a putt for eagle, but if the shot is offline a watery fate awaits. The sensible play is to lay up about 180 metres off the tee to leave a wedge into the green.

Hole 14, 129 metres, par 3Uphill short hole protected by bunkers left and right. Generally this hole is played into the prevailing wind, so club selection is crucial to hit the green in regulation.

Hole 15, 269 metres, par 4The smart play here is to lay up to 180 or 190 metres off the tee, which will leave a clear shot to the green. If the longer hitters take driver they will find this hole is well protected by trees.

Hole 16, 289 metres, par 4Straightaway par four back uphill. A good drive will leave a short pitch into the green. It’s a devilish green with a wicked right-to-left slope. Don’t leave your ball above the hole with your approach, it’s asking for trouble!

Hole 17, 362 metres, par 4You need to hit a slight draw off the tee to find the fairway and have a shot at finding the green in regulation on this dogleg right to left. Otherwise it’s tree trouble. If your luck is in, approaches hit to the left can find a generous bounce on to the green. The putting surface is sloping and speedy.

Hole 18, 408 metres, par 4Another risk and reward hole tempting the long hitters, with a 260-metre carry over water needed off the tee. If you have pinpoint accuracy (or it’s your lucky day!) a gun barrel-straight but under-hit shot might avoid a watery grave by skipping across the bridge in the centre of the fairway. Otherwise, it’s a very long lay up to about 220 metres, which will leave an uphill approach with a long iron into a green that slopes front to back. A tough finishing hole.

MEMBERS’ GOLFMembers at Bowral Golf Club love their golf and can look forward to a full golfing calendar offering a great range of events throughout the season.

The club calendar features prestigious Honour Board events such as the Club Championship, which are even more special at a club that boasts a history spanning two centuries. There are also the traditional monthly medals or Stableford competitions that offer the chance to make many new friends.

Men’s competitions are normally played on Wednesdays and Saturdays. A Ladies competition for Full Playing Members is held in conjunction with the Saturday Members competition.


Women’s competitions are normally played on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while Sundays and public holidays often feature Medley competitions. Visitors are encouraged to play in our open days on the third Wednesday of the month and an additional open day for women takes place on the second Tuesday of the month.

Interclub play is both an important and enjoyable part of club life and both men and women enter teams that offers the opportunity to represent the club against others in a competitive yet friendly environment.

The men play in the White Horse Cup, a competition for clubs throughout the Illawarra and highlands. The region’s longest-running interclub matchplay competition, it has a maximum permitted handicap of 24 and can therefore be enjoyed by players of all abilities.

Our Lady Golfers enter a team in the Central Southern Golf Association Bronze Pennants. They don’t just take part, either, having won the event in 2016!

Other more social interclub matches are enjoyed each year against clubs with whom we have enjoyed friendships and close associations over a number of decades.

Our biannual match against male and female members of the Australian Golf Club for the Whales Tooth dates all the way back to 1961. A similarly popular event for another coveted trophy, the Bruce Smith Cup, is enjoyed against Moss Vale.

Bowral is a club with character and blessed with a rich history. This is seen in many of the competitions enjoyed by members. It is a special feeling having one’s name put alongside those who have won a trophy that dates back to the formative years of the club.

The Armstrong Cup, for instance, was presented to the club in 1935 by then member Warwick Armstrong, a former captain of the Australian cricket team, who played in 50 Test matches between 1901 and 1921.

Though small in stature, the Keigwin Cup is one of the most important and treasured pieces of silverware in Bowral Golf Club’s possession.

This annual trophy for members is named after Thomas Henry Keigwin, who was elected the club’s first president in 1901.

There are many relaxed and fun competitions throughout the season, including charity days raising money for local good causes which highlights the generous nature of the club’s diverse membership.

The great club atmosphere can really be experienced here, as well as at some of the golfing events held throughout the year to celebrate key dates in the calendar, such as Australia Day, Anzac Day or the Melbourne Cup.

Twilight golf, held on Fridays during daylight saving, is equally pleasurable. Golf as the sun sets, followed by welcoming in the weekend with a refreshing post-round drink in the clubhouse. Does life get any better than this?

We are proud of our historic club, wonderful course and a clubhouse full of character (and characters!) and atmosphere. Members and staff at one of the friendliest clubs in New South Wales would be delighted to see you.

Many of our members are former visitors or guests, who came to Bowral for the first time and found the place and its atmosphere so special that they decided to become part of the club.

If considering a round, it is always advisable to phone ahead to book a tee-time or to check with the club our competition schedule for the day. Our first commitment is understandably to our members, but there are ample opportunities for visitors to enjoy the course as well.

We have clubs for hire and all the things you need to have a good day on the greens. Pull buggies and electric carts are also available to hire and visitors are encouraged to stay on for a bite to eat and a drink in the clubhouse after their round.

Visitors will always be most welcome. Those visiting us for the first time should note that like most clubs, Bowral has a dress code along with the standard golfing etiquette such as maintaining a good pace of play.

CLUBHOUSE

The Bowral Golf Club clubhouse is a delightful place to spend some time in the company of friends before or after a round of golf. A traditional building, full of charm and displaying memorabilia from the club’s rich history, it offers the comforts of home to members, guests and visitors alike.

Good conversation and the great ambiance is one of the features of our club, arguably even more so since the far-sighted decision was taken back in 2000 to remove gaming machines.

Enjoy wonderful views out over the course from the terrace, or a glass of fine wine while sat on a Chesterfield couch getting warm by the fire.

In addition to the wonderful surroundings, a constant throughout the club’s existence has been the excellent service and the warmth of the welcome. Bowral’s staff pride themselves on the personal touch where nothing is too much trouble.

Lunch is available from Monday to Saturday, there are dinners on the first Friday of the month and themed evenings throughout the year. Our chef is something very special and held in high regard by our members.

Whether a lifelong member or first-time visitor, the clubrooms offer a haven of calm and tranquillity and the promise of catching up with old friends or making news ones.

Enter the Member’s Room and be transported to a bygone age! This room gives a flavour of the home comforts that have been enjoyed by Bowral members and visitors here for the past century. It can comfortably accommodate up to 40 depending on seating configurations. There is a nice warming fireplace and inviting Chesterfield couches. Once sat down you won’t want to leave!

The Hastings Clark Room is our boardroom, named after the man who was our Professional here for 48 years. The room seats up to 14 people and is perfect for that intimate family meal or for private meetings.

HOW TO FIND USBowral Golf Club is located close to the centre of Bowral, around 120km south of Sydney via the Hume Highway.

Directions from the CBD

Take the M1, M5 and M31 Hume Motorway out of the city. Turn left off the Hume Motorway to join the Old Hume Highway (signposted Mittagong, Bowral, Moss Vale). Remain on this road for 5.6km until reaching Mittagong and turn left at the traffic lights on to the B73 Bowral Rd (signposted Bowral, Moss Vale). After another 5.6km, take the second exit at the roundabout to remain on the B73 Kangaloon Road. After 400m, you will see the white Bowral Golf Club sign on your right. Turn right onto David Street and park in the car park just beyond the clubhouse on the left.
