Festival Director’s IntroductionI am delighted to present this year’s Festival, where local meets the international, new rubs shoulders with the world renowned and classic and contemporary blend together to create something unique, inspiring and imaginative for the town and its visitors. This year, the Festival has offered new commissions, creating work never shown before, as well as giving space to develop ambitious proposals responding to the spaces and places both in the town centre, and further afield. With the overarching theme of journeys threading its way through the Festival, the town plays host to work that takes the audience on journeys of the imagination and journeys of discovery. Enjoy.

Carol MaundFestival Director

WelcomeNow in its second year, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival is an exciting new proposition for the town. The Festival is an important element of a wider strategy of Arts Bournemouth, whose role is to drive forward the arts offer of the town, encourage new visitor markets, boost the economy and attract additional cultural industries to the Borough. The annual Festival is just one of Arts Bournemouth’s events helping to make Bournemouth a rich, creative and interesting place to live, work, study and visit. We look forward to seeing you at this year’s Festival!

The Girls + Wulf Theatre Land of Lower GardeniaSat 29 Sept. 19.00 – 20.00 Lower Gardens

“Welcome to the Land of Lower Gardenia, a ‘Technicolor’ parallel dimension where a rich cast of happy inhabitants greet the public with unnervingly fixed grins.”

From the creators of the Grand Grotesque Parade (2011), comes a new and extraordinary piece. A series of surreal, pageant-like tableaux vivants (or ‘living pictures’) and roaming performances. Mythical and symbolic characters relating to Bournemouth abound, including the four English roses, lions and legless heraldic birds found within the town’s crest. With Ali Sharpe’s choir.

“Think Angela Carter crossed with Cindy Sherman.”

Festival 2012 Emerging Artists ‘Journeys’ Commissions

From an open invitation to submit proposals for new commissions for this year’s Festival, and responding to the theme of journeys, eleven artists’ proposals have been selected and developed. Most are featured during the opening programme; some are for one day and night only, whilst others continue for the Festival’s duration.

Tom HallBoy RacerThroughout the FestivalLower GardensThis sculptural work “deals with the awkward journey of growing up.” It, however, is a celebration of youth and the particularity of the seafront being a meeting point for the young. The boy racer car is provocatively parked, heavily gilded, adorned with gold and revered as an icon; “A god to a transient group.”

Roy BrownWhat I Know, What you Know, What we KnowSat 29 Sept. 12.00 – 22.00Lower GardensInspired by ideas from hippy DIY manuals of the 1970s, and reflecting on the architecture of the Bournemouth area, Brown creates a workshop for the production of art or craft objects. Emma PurchaseAriel’s WatchSat 29 Sept. 12.00 – 18.00 Bournemouth SeafrontMembers of the public have been invited to take on the symbolic role of The Mermaid by ‘taking watch’ of the sea by sitting atop a specially created temporary giant look-out chair. The piece invites participants and the public to enjoy a shared nostalgia for places of water and in particular the sea.

Amanda LazarVirtual JourneyThroughout the Festival Lower GardensLazar has created a treasure hunt with a difference. Placed around the gardens are a series of QR codes which link to one of eight short films which, when scanned with your smartphone will take you on a virtual journey that begins where you are standing and takes you somewhere new. Thur 18 Oct – Sun 28 Oct. 11.00 – 16.00 Plus evening opening during other eventsShelley Manor Free entry Since 2010, conceptual artist Giorgio Sadotti has been assembling ‘THIS THIS MONSTER THIS THINGS’, an exquisite corpse made from objects produced by fifty-one artist friends and acquaintances. This process of gradual accumulation has resulted in a meta-artwork, a bastard object or a curatorial monster that mockingly presents a ‘complete’ entity, a Frankensteinian self-portrait drawn from people who have become familiar with Sadotti and his work over a twenty-five year period.

Now Sadotti constructs ‘THIS THIS MONSTER THIS THINGS’ in the semi-derelict Shelley Manor. Among the remains are Simon Martin’s ‘consciousness’, which comes in the form of a real lemon, Georgina Starr’s ‘brain’ made from bubble-gum and a tarot card, and Paul Noble’s spinning, hallucinogenic and multi-faceted ‘left foot and toes’ hewn from polystyrene and plaster.

This evolving artwork will be presented with further works from Sadotti, including his collection of over one hundred different versions of Mary Shelley’s book Frankenstein to be installed within the exhibition space.

Giorgio Sadotti is a London-based contemporary artist. His work is held in the collection of Tate and in the British Council Art Collections. In 2003 he won a Paul Hamlyn Award for visual arts.

‘THIS THIS MONSTER THIS THINGS’ was

Bill MorrisonSpark of Being Fri 19 Oct. 19.00Shelley Manor£5, £4 conc. artsbournemouth.org.uk/tickets 0844 576 4500An inspired collaboration between America’s most adventurous film-maker and musician, Spark of Being takes Shelley’s Frankenstein into fresh and unexpected territory. Using a fascinating mix of found footage and the mercurial compositions of trumpeter Dave Douglas, Bill Morrison matches found silent film with key sequences from Shelley’s novel. Douglas’ score moves from jazz flights to ambient drone, and is as integral as Morrison’s gorgeously distressed and decayed images. The emotional core — what Morrison calls an exploration of “alienation and trying to find love in society” — comes to life in vintage scenes of city crowds and views of nature and domestic life. Bill MorrisonThe Great Flood20.15A stunning film-music collaboration by Bill Morrison and Bill Frisell, based on, and inspired by, the catastrophic Mississippi River Flood of 1927, and the ensuing journey and transformation of American society.

Much of Morrison’s work is based on actual footage of the 1927 flood, shot on volatile nitrate stock. Footage is pock marked and partially deteriorated, forming part of the aesthetic, giving distorted images associated with the destructive force of the rising water. Frisell has drawn upon his wide musical palette informed by elements of American roots music to provide a superb original score to this moving and historic story. (80 min).

About Arts Bournemouth through the yearArts Bournemouth aims to enhance and market the arts offer of Bournemouth, to attract new visitor markets and creative industries, stimulate the local economy, help retain graduates and make Bournemouth a more enjoyable place to live, work, visit and study.

Arts Bournemouth works collaboratively with many different partners, enabling us to deliver arts events throughout the year. The Festival is one of these events, which prides itself on presenting an extraordinary visitor experience and encouraging emerging artists to present work alongside established international artists.

New for 2013, following a successful bid to the National Lottery through the BFI and Creative England, is an on-going programme of ‘pop-up’ live cinema events. Already noted by the BBC as having played an important role in stimulating audiences for film,
