The meeting begins with music and after the time of prayerthere is a final reading.

Everyone is welcome to join this small informal group.

Step out then and resolutely apply this sovereign remedy. Justas you are, lift up your sick self to God as he is-our God isgood and gracious.

From the ArchivesIn connection with the Bourne Abbey church a flower servicewas held on Sunday afternoon last. Mr. J. Read, who hasrecently come to reside at Bourne, and who was a fully-licensed lay reader of the Exeter Diocese, conducted theservice.

There was a good attendance, Mr. L. Jones presiding atthe organ. The flowers, which were brought by the children, were subsequently sent to the hospital.

Mothers At Play - On the 10th inst., in ideal weather, about100 members of the Mothers’ Union and Infant WelfareAssociation assembled on the lawn of the Abbey Vicarage bythe invitation of the Vicar and Mrs. Grinter, who provided abountiful tea for their visitors. This was followed by variouscompetitions. In a tug-of-war between grandmothers andmothers the latter’s lighter years did not avail them againstthe experience and wisdom of their elders, who won easily.Judging by the continuous peals of laughter, all must havehad a happy time, and the promoters of the entertainmentwere quite repaid by seeing matrons happy in the forgetful-ness of their cares and anxieties for a few hours. Two prizeswere given for each competition, and an anonymous donorgave two prizes for the highest attendance at the InfantWelfare Association.

The Value of Prayer - On Sunday afternoon last a meetingof the Church of England Men’s Society was held in theGrammar School, when the Vicar (Rev. Canon Grinter)spoke of the value of prayer. He emphasised the apparentlaxity in prayer of the present generation, and added thatprayer was useless unless the suppliant entered into the spirit, and himself helped to bring about what he sought to beaccomplished by prayer. At the close of his remarks, whichwere very much appreciated, the Vicar invited comments andseveral of those present responded to the vicar’s invitation.

Music at Bourne Abbey

As most of you will know by now, the Parochial ChurchCouncil has decided that in view of the continued risk fromCOVID infection the current form of Sunday service willremain until at least the end of the month.

This means that we will continue to sing only at thecommunion, generally two short anthems and two hymns.

Practices will continue at 9.30 am before the service, and for some 20 minutes afterwards.

This has proved to be a surprisingly effective andappreciated format, although there is insufficient practicetime to learn new repertory.

I would like to thank members for adapting to thesecircumstances over the last 18 months or so, and keeping themusical flag flying at the Abbey.

I am very grateful for Kaitlyn's increasing support onthe organ, which has proved invaluable. I am also verygrateful to Stanley for spending Sunday mornings at theAbbey when on vacations from Oxford: his talents andsupport are very much appreciated.

Both Stanley and I will be away on August 15th, but wehave been fortunate in securing Jane McKee's services to sup-port Kaitlyn on that Sunday: I much appreciate her help.

Please note that the next CHORAL EVENSONG is onSeptember 12th - the 2nd Sunday of the month.
