Independent Coulter Drill

pages 4-7

Two thousand and fourteen (2014) will mark 40 years since Bourgault Industries Ltd. began its manufacturing operations in a 4600 square foot facility, located in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan. Because my father, Frank Bourgault, was very community minded, he had a desire to use his inventive talents, his experiences in farming, and selling and servicing farm equipment, to make a positive difference in his community. His desire motivated him to found F. P. Bourgault Industries Ltd. He had begun developing his new cultivator in the late 1960s, which were some of the most challenging times in the history of grain farming in Western Canada. At that time, farmers were basically “down and out” almost like they were in the 1930s. Who remembers the “Operation L.I.F.T. (Lower Inventories For Tomorrow) program” implemented in 1970, wherein the Canadian Government agreed to pay farmers not to grow wheat?

Because of the extremely low delivery quotas and severely depressed grain prices during the late 60s and early 70s, many farmers simply could not make ends meet so they began selling their farms and going elsewhere to obtain employment. This exodus of farm families negatively affected many communities, and in some areas the community was decimated losing most of its businesses and later its school. My father’s goal was to make jobs available, locally, so that the local people would not have to leave their families behind in order to be able to earn a living.

My father had been inspired mainly by two businesses; Doepker Industries Ltd., located in Annaheim, Saskatchewan, and Morris Rod-Weeder Company, (now called Morris Industries Ltd.) located in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Because Annaheim was only 30 miles away, my father knew the Doepker family, including the company’s President and General Manager at that time, Francis Doepker. Francis and the Doepker family encouraged my father to establish a business to manufacture his cultivator. This was alongside giving him advice on how to go about setting up a manufacturing business and assisting him in manufacturing some of the components for some of the cultivators that were sold before his first plant was built.

Since its humble beginnings in that 4600 square foot building, Bourgault has grown in physical size by more than 100 times. When the current expansion of nearly 200,000 square feet has been completed, the company will have approximately 600,000 square feet of total plant and office area. However, in the coming year, additional facility expansions are also planned for Albury, New South Wales, Australia and Minot, North Dakota. The total cost of all of the expansions will be in the $50 million, plus, dollar range. These expansions are designed to make the company more efficient and better able to handle today’s large equipment.

Along the way, Bourgault Industries Ltd. was inducted in Saskatchewan’s Business Hall of Fame by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. More recently, Bourgault Industries Ltd. was rated number one for Overall Dealer Satisfaction by the North American Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA) and Bourgault was listed by SaskBusiness magazine as being the 29th largest company in

the province. Although it is certainly rewarding to receive recognition for some of our accomplishments, it is not where our attention is focused. The most fundamental purpose for our company’s existence, which is the reason that the company was founded in the first place, is to improve the lives of the people who work for it. However, we strive to provide ongoing opportunities for our people by designing and manufacturing equipment that will improve the lives of the people who purchase our equipment and use it. More specifically, we focus on developing equipment that will make farming easier, less risky and more rewarding for those farmers who purchase our equipment. In designing his first cultivator, one of my father’s goals was to make it easier and less costly to farm in stony conditions. His design also reduced the number of passes that it took to get the fields ready for seeding with press drills and in many cases meant that a farmer needed only one cultivator rather than having both a chisel plow and a field cultivator to farm with. He had a passion for designing a better product to make a farmer’s life less frustrating, but also to make that farmer more productive.

Today, our designers and the technicians who support their efforts still share that deep rooted passion for designing equipment that will make farming easier and the farming enterprise more successful. When one looks at the 3320 PHD™ Air Hoe Drill with the Hi-Flotation (HF), Quick Depth Adjustment (QDA) and Mid Row Bander® (MRB) options mated to a 7000 series Air Seeder cart, equipped with a Saddle Tank™, one recognizes that this system has many technological advancements that will allow farmers to be more productive and effective. Uniformity of seeding depth, strategic placement of the right levels of nutrients and the correct packing pressure for the soil conditions in which

the farmer is seeding, are all essential for maximizing yield potential. No other seeding unit provides these capabilities. These designs were developed by people who have a burning desire to make farming better.

Over what will soon be 40 years of operation, this industry has seen manufacturers of all sizes come and go. Some of them have merged together, or others re-emerged after going into and emerging from receivership. Some of the names of the larger companies that have experienced considerable flux over the past 40 years include: International Harvester Company, Case Corporation, Massey Ferguson, and White. Some of the smaller and medium sized companies that have undergone major transitions include Versatile, Friggstad and Flexi-Coil. Some of these smaller and medium sized companies have risen to achieve fairly high levels of success and then fallen back to modesty when other newly minted manufacturers have come into the market with their new and improved products or the industry fell upon hard times. Some of our short-line competitors have been sold to bigger players including some having been sold to some of the majors; for example, Friggstad was sold to Flexi-Coil Ltd. and Flexi-Coil Ltd. was later sold to New Holland, which is part of Case New Holland Global N. V.

At Bourgault, we have continued to maintain our independence. This is simply because this is how we continue to best serve both our people and our customers. With all of its divisions and subsidiaries Bourgault Industries Ltd. has a staff approaching nearly 800 people, but we are still relatively small and nimble compared to the majors. Our culture also remains one of fostering innovation while remaining focused on developing equipment that provides real benefits to farmers. Seeding is the one

area of grain production where there are unlimited opportunities to make improvements. Our ongoing mission is to design and manufacture equipment that will give farmers the ability to better address the variables that they have to deal with on their farms. For example, when one looks at the 3320 PHD hoe drill with the HF (Hi-Flotation) option, one can see that this drill will allow farmers to seed in wetter conditions and still do a good seeding job where its predecessors, the 5710 or 3310 would not do nearly as well.

As we look to the future and the next decade, we expect that agriculture will continue to change rapidly as farms continue to get larger and skilled labour to operate the equipment on these farms becomes scarcer. We also recognize that because of the larger farm sizes, farmers will have to be able to operate over a wider range of field conditions than they have in the past, in order to get the crop in, so that they can maximize their financial returns. They will have to become more effective in using and strategically deploying their crop inputs as the cost of these inputs continue to rise. Farmers will have to become more discriminating as new technologies emerge and are introduced as not all technologies will add value to the farm. In fact, in the future as in the past, some will carry with them the potential to produce very negative consequences, under certain circumstances. Our approach in the area of introducing new technologies will be to ensure that we fully appreciate the agronomic implications of the equipment that we are introducing by verifying that it will be beneficial to farmers before we introduce it. In the past, we relied on external agencies and their agronomic experts for doing this work for us. However, we have learned that we are far better off doing the plot and

field work ourselves as we are able to monitor, first-hand, from start to finish, what is happening to the crop.

Although the past 40 years have produced some interesting but difficult challenges, we are enthusiastically looking to the opportunities that lie ahead. With the demand for grain increasing by 1½% each year, the industry will have its challenges in feeding the world. However, we have no doubt that farmers will rise to this challenge. We look forward to being a part of this effort by continuing to design and develop new equipment that will not only help farmers to produce the grain that the world needs, but also help them to become even more financially successful as they continue to expand their operations and modernize their farming methods.

The advanced patented parallel walking coulter arm provides both accuracy and consistency in varying field conditions. The parallel link design, combined with the walking axle cleaner/packer assembly delivers unsurpassed depth control and contour-ability. Expect consistent seed placement resulting in uniform emergence, even in challenging field conditions.

When going over rocks or uneven ground, for every 1" that the cleaner wheel adjusts vertically, the seed depth moves only 3/8".

For every 1" that the packer wheel moves vertically, the seed depth moves only 5/8".

When moving over smooth terrain, the seed boot will follow the combined vertical movement of the cleaner/packer wheel at a 1:1 ratio.

Respond instantly to changing soil and moisture conditions! The in-cab Model 405 Drill Control allows you to adjust opener downforce and packing pressure on-the-go. In the walking configuration, packing

pressure is shared 70% to the packing wheel and 30% to the cleaner wheel. Lock the cleaner wheel into the "up" position to direct 100% of packing force to the packer wheel.

During seeding, if you feel yourself getting stuck, simply turn the Drill Control off (to zero down pressure) and “float” out of the sticky situation.

The narrow profile Low Disturbance Scraper provides seed placement in a narrow cut seedbed. The result is an exceptional field finish that preserves the maximum soil moisture in order to foster germination.

The Winged Scraper (offered on 12" spacing only) provides additional seed protection by placing the seed away from the furrow created by the coulter where hairpinning can occur. Field finish is similar to that of a hoe drill.

In addition, the Winged Scraper can be used to separate seed and starter fertilizers. This ability can be especially

useful when seeding legume crops such as soybeans. Legumes are susceptible to phosphate damage when P is seed placed. Placing the P off to the side and below the seed reduces damage to the Rhizobia bacteria in the seed trench–allowing for

maximum N fixation by the plant.

BOURGAULT SERVICE

MAXIMIZE YOUR INDEPENDENT COULTER DRILL'S SEEDING POTENTIAL.

Packing Pressure / Opener Down Pressure

Applying the correct opener pressure is of paramount importance in achieving optimal seed placement; check the seed placement and soil after each adjustment or change in conditions. If inadequate pressure is applied, the coulter will bounce; this adversely affects seed placement in rough or hard to penetrate soils. On the other hand, too much pressure causes the transport wheels to lift off of the ground, limiting opener travel. Pay close attention to your pressure and seed placement.

Ground Speed

In most conditions, the Bourgault coulter-style drills allow for higher seeding speeds, however, too high of a ground speed in some conditions (i.e. hard ground) can negatively affect seed placement by not allowing the coulter to fully penetrate, or not allowing the soil to flow properly back into the seed row. Check that the furrow is closing properly.

Residue Management

The aggressive compound angle of the 3710/3720 ICD disc helps to cut through straw...but there are limitations. If you adjust the drill for areas of heavy residue it may not perform properly in areas of light residue and vise/versa. One of the keys to proper residue management is to maintain a uniform spread across the field; this allows you to adjust the drill for one condition only. When seeding with any coulter drill, it is imperative to do a good job of chopping and spreading residue with the combine. Also, it may be beneficial to leave the straw cut higher so there is a lighter "mat" of chopped straw to penetrate.

The 3710 and 3720 Independent Coulter Drills deliver very consistent seed placement in most soil types. In order to achieve optimal seed placement and seedbed density a number of adjustments can be performed.

Following is a list of measures that can be taken in order to enhance the performance of your 3710 or 3720 ICD: Following is a list of measures that can be taken in order to enhance the performance of your 3710 or 3720 ICD: F

Fan Speed

Too high of a fan speed causes seed bounce. It is important to follow the fan speed recommendations in the Bourgault operator's manual. If plugging occurs it is recommended to first check hose routing and lengths and if plugging is still occurring to increase the speed in small increments of about 50 rpm. With some large seeds it may be beneficial to add aftermarket seed brakes.

Soil Conditions

Soil conditions may also affect seed placement. Seed placement and seedbed density should be checked any time soil conditions or type have changed.

Scraper Adjustment

The ICD scraper runs parallel to the coulter disc and has two functions: 1) it keeps the coulter disc clean, and 2) it creates a pocket for the seed to fall into. Remember that the scraper must run flat against the coulter and will require periodic adjustments as the bevel of the disc wears down. Refer to the scraper adjustment procedure outlined in the operator’s manual.

Packer Position

The most popular packer option is the Double-Shoulder Offset packer, the offset shoulder collapses the undercut seed trench while the shorter shoulder helps gauge the opener and retain soil. Adjust the packer side to side to fine tune the packer wheel placement over the furrow.

Cleaner Wheel

The cleaner wheel has two functions: 1) it carries 30% of the weight of the opener when in the “walking” position to help gauge the seeding depth, and 2) it cleans the disc. As well, there are two different cleaner wheel options available: a narrow wheel designed to reduce stubble damage and a wide wheel designed for loose or pre-worked fields. The cleaner wheel should be adjusted to have a slight drag on the disc to keep it clean, too much drag may stop the disc.

If challenging conditions arise the cleaner wheel can be locked up on the coulter drill. This unique feature eliminates any potential “Bulldozing”. (Seed depth and packing pressure will require adjustment after locking the gauge wheel up).

Disc and Bearings

Follow maintenance recommendations in the operator's manual to determine when to replace the coulter disc in order to keep the performance at a satisfactory level. Also, ensure the bearings are greased and check for play in the disc. Properly maintained bearings will ensure the disc is running at the correct angles and the cleaner wheel maintains the proper friction to the disc. Follow guidelines for greasing and maintenance is documented in the operator's manual.

When properly adjusted Bourgault Coulter Drills will generate impressive seeding results.

AGRONOMY

In summary, phosphorous helps build the “factory” that manufactures yield and delivers it on time!

Early season limitations to the availability of P can cause restrictions in plant development from which recovery may not be possible. Producers may be applying the recommended amount of phosphate for target yields, but in a manner that restricts the plants access until later in the growing season. With the importance of this “early access” clearly established in many studies, where and how we position our P is a primary concern. At the right time, in the right place and in the right amount are fundamental factors for phosphorus to be available when and in amounts that the crop requires.

Phosphorous is considered an immobile nutrient in the soil as it is estimated that P can diffuse an average of only 0.5 mm (0.02") from point of placement. Therefore, roots must pass within 0.5 mm (0.02") from a source of P to be absorbed.* As uptake of all nutrients, especially P, by the plant is directly related to the size of the root mass, a larger root mass generally means better nutrient uptake.

Roots will not enter the nitrogen band for 3 to 4 weeks depending upon the amount of N applied. Until the nitrogen has adequately dissipated, the plant will have very limited access to any applied P if it is all placed in the N band. This underscores the importance of adequate nitrogen band separation from the P applied during seeding. With most of the seeders available in the market today, this means we must place at least some P in the seed row for early access by the seedling. P requirements above what can be safely placed with the seed can be placed in the nitrogen band for access later 3 to 4 weeks into the season.

Nitrogen is the highest volume nutrient required to develop both quality and yield. Phosphorous should arguably be next in line. However many of us do not always take the time to completely understand this nutrient, why it is so important in over-all crop development and why reducing phosphorus rates in times of tight margins will have long term detrimental effects on soil productivity. There have been many excellent articles written on the topic of phosphorus nutrition. “The Importance of Early Season Phosphorus Nutrition” by C.A. Grant, D.N. Flaten, D.J Tomasiewicz & S.C Sheppard” is one example. It is a well-researched and comprehensive reference that summarizes the information from about 65 studies. (It is also a very easy read.)

What are the primary roles of Phosphorous?

It is essential for early robust root growth and development;

It is essential in early plant growth;

It is a key component in photosynthesis;

It is required for respiration;

It is involved with energy storage and transfer.

THE PHOSPHATE FACTORFocusing on Phosphate for Better Crop Development and Yield

When discussions amongst Farmers and Agronomists at coffee row turn to crop nutrition, nitrogen often takes center stage and rightly so.

*Barber, S.A. 1977. Application of phosphate fertilizers: methods, rates and time of application in relation to the phosphorus status of soils. Phosphorus Agric.

by Garry Meier, P.Ag., Corporate Agronomist

The majority of phosphorous in the soil is tied up as inorganic phosphate and is not readily available to the plant. The phosphorous contained in organic matter, however, is released into the soil solution as soluble (ortho)phosphate – which plants can readily use. Fertilizer phosphate comes in two physical forms, dry or liquid – which are comprised of two chemical forms polyphosphates and orthophosphates in varying concentrations. Plants absorb P as orthophosphate ions. Polyphosphates are essentially a chain link molecule of orthophosphate molecules, and are not available to the plant until the chain is broken up into the soluble orthophosphate ions. This requires about the same time and soil temperature as would be required to germinate a crop such as canola. There are a couple of liquid and granular formulations available that contains varying ratios of ortho vs poly phosphate. The debate of ortho vs poly as the source P for your crop

is ongoing by the various suppliers, but at the end of the day all sources will work very well if your crop has a chance to access the applied P and the rate is sufficient to supply the crop’s annual requirements. Choosing the form of phosphate to use comes down to personal preference and price per pound of P applied. Liquid P sources can claim a small advantage over dry products when you consider the evenness of product application within the seed row. For reader interest, the price per pound of P from 3 different fertilizer sources in North Dakota (average of 3 retails) is as follows:

12-51-0 dry: $0.47/lb of P

10-34-0 liquid: $0.73/lb of P

Liquid Orthophosphate (Alpine): $1.78/lb

Remember; a 40 bu/ac crop of canola requires about 60 pounds of P, with 20 lb of that returning to the soil in the form of crop residue [Canola Council of Canada]. If your

fertility program is supplying less than that, and your crop yields 40 bu/ac, your crop is tapping into the existing phosphate in the soil, which will eventually run out. In summary, placing safe levels of fertilizer P as close as possible to the seed (seed placed) will allow for the greatest uptake of P, critical for the early stages of seedling development. There is a limit to the amount of P which can be safely seed placed no matter the source – and this does vary by crop. Legumes tend to be the most sensitive to high rates of seed placed P. Where P rates higher than those which would be considered safe for seed placement are called for, the flexibility built into Bourgault systems equipped with mid row banders allows for a safe rate to be seed placed, with the option of directing the balance of the P requirement into the mid row band. Bourgault Systems – your ultimate fertilizer placement tool for all conditions.

In this check example, canola has germinated and emerged without any added fertilizer.

In this example, a granule of phosphate was placed by each pair of seeds. Notice the advanced root development compared to the previous check example.

The high percentage of QDA sales indicates that the added convenience of being able to adjust your seed depth in a matter of minutes is of high value to Producers. This convenience feature translates into increased productivity and peace of mind ensuring that the seed depth has been optimally set for ideal emergence in all conditions and done so in a matter of minutes!

The respectable percentage of XTC sales reinforces that there is a niche market with undulating terrain that requires the kind of contour following ability that the XTC 1:1 seed opener delivers.

3320-66 XTC with HF option shown.

Since the release of the 3320 Paralink Hoe Drill series in 2011, the steady increase in percentage of North American sales of the 3320 Quick Depth Adjust and the 3320 eXtra Terrain Contouring (the QDA and XTC) suggests that producers are realizing the benefi ts of both specialized units for their business.

Following is a breakdown of percentage sales according to PHD model designation for 2013.

Get the best of both worlds with the 3320QDA; the only drill on the market that offers both independent depth control and quick seed depth adjustment. The QDA uses the proven technology of the 2:1 PHD Seed Opener Assembly; the 2:1 contour ratio dampens opener movement providing a consistent seed depth even when seeding at an angle to last year's furrows.

The 3320SE and 3320QDA employ the PHD Seed Opener Assembly--- a trailing parallel link design with a 2:1 contour ratio. The 2:1 contour ratio dampens opener movement providing a consistent seed depth even when seeding at an angle to last year’s furrows, working through aggressive fi eld residue, or operating at higher seeding speeds in comparison to competitive independent seeding units.

was phenomenal! Very seldom did we see the v-packer loading up with

mud, it defi nitely proves itself for that.

Blair combined a ¾" opener with a V-style semi-

pneumatic packer. He found that they were able to

apply very low pressure and still achieve the packing

job they were after.

Don’t beat your equipment (or your back) up! The Bourgault 3320

Producers must be aware that side-band openers used on wider row spacings endanger

the seedbed by causing excessive soil disturbance and increased risk of fertilizer damage,

especially when used with variable rate control.

The success of operating at optimal row spacings is proven by the fact that over 85% of

the industry-leading 3320 PHD seeding systems were purchased with 10" seed spacing.

If Deere is going to compare themselves to Fendt,

They’ll need to shift into high gear.

Some people will tell you the Deere IVT and the Fendt CVT are the same. In fact, some people will tell you nearly

anything to keep you from looking at a Fendt. And the differences are significant.

The first difference between Deere's IVT and the Fendt CVT is the fact that Deere's still contains clutch packs. That’s

because their IVT still has to shift gears within the drive range. And clutches are wear points for transmissions. Also,

efficiency in any continuously variable transmission is lowest when most of the power is coming from the hydrostatic

system. With a Fendt CVT this is right as the tractor starts to move. In our competitor's IVT it’s at about 6 mph (the

speed you’ll want to plant or pull tillage) and, about 16 mph (the speed you’ll want to transport or cut hay).

Since we invented the modern, efficient, continuously variable transmission for high horsepower tractors, our

competition has been grinding gears trying to keep up. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… well…

we’re looking forward to being flattered for a long time.

In you’re not already driving Fendt, perhaps it’s time you make the shift to the tractor that doesn’t have to.

1974-2014

Bourgault is a rural Saskatchewan agri-business success story.

The Bourgault story all began in the late 1960s in the small community of St. Brieux, Saskatchewan where Frank Bourgault, a local farmer and inventor, realized a certain need for a cultivator that would work successfully in the very rocky conditions around St. Brieux. Further to Frank's motivation was a desire to create employment opportunities for the St. Brieux community and surrounding area.

In 1968, Frank Bourgault was a 44 year old farmer and partner in the Massey Ferguson implement dealership in St. Brieux, Saskatchewan. Frank had both, as a farmer and implement dealer, experienced the limitations of existing field cultivator designs. With careful study and hard work, Frank developed and tested a prototype unit that would do the job of both a chisel plow and a cultivator. This lead to the construction of several units for local area farmers.

On May 4th, 1973, Frank, his business partner Don Coquet and Frank’s eldest son Gerry, a student at the College of Engineering in Saskatoon incorporated F.P. Bourgault Industries Ltd. Frank later recruited an additional partner, Paul Leray. The new company built a 4,600 square foot facility on the edge of the village of St. Brieux in 1974, and began production of the dual purpose cultivator that winter.

1973

The newly established company celebrated it official grand opening on February 12th, 1975. The honorable Ed Torchewsky–Minister of Industry & Trade, cuts the ribbon held by Don Coquet (left) and Frank Bourgault (right). Thurston Tablot from the Melfort radio station CJVR was reporting on the event. Dignitaries and community members are in the audience to witness the event.

19719751975197

Frank (in the white jacket) along Alain Ferre inspects a newly released industry-first five-row, dual-purpose cultivator. The addition of the fifth row greatly improved the trash clearance, and was offered on 28 to 60 foot units.

Bourgault recognized that the newly emerging air seeder technology would be an ideal fit with their cultivators. Extensive testing culminates with the release of the Model 138 air seeder.

The growing line of Bourgault 100 series air seeders, as well as an extensive line of tillage products created challenges to keep up with demand in the existing plant in town. A new facility was constructed 1 mile north of the village that focused on the production of air seeders, sprayers, harrows, harrow-packer bars, and wing-type-packer products. ~19791979197

The Bulk Boom is Bourgault’s next advancement in air seeder material handling. The Bulk Boom makes loading bulk bags of seed, fertilizer or inoculant both more convenient and efficient.

When it comes time to get the seed in the ground, productivity is paramount. Efficiently filling the air seeder can be one of the biggest challenges when time is limited. Since the release of the 7000 Series air seeders, many design advancements have been made in order to increase product transfer efficiency. These included offering a 12" auger option alongside the already existing 10" conveyor with 15" belt to keep fill times low. Another introduction was the Saddle Tank which was designed to make loading 55 lb bags of canola seed quicker and easier than hauling them to the top of the tank.

Just as these design features have enhanced product transfer efficiency, the Bulk Boom expands your product transferring ability to include bulk bags.

NO NEED FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPORTING EQUIPMENT

The Bulk Boom allows the farmer to fill the Saddle Tank with bulk bags without having to worry about transporting a front end loader or forklift to the field.

EXTREME LIFTING CAPABILIT Y AND ARM SPAN

The Bulk Boom is designed to lift up to 2400 lb from the ground or a truck box, up to the Saddle Tank or even into tank 3 in the main air seeder body. The boom can also reach the storage platform which allows the farmer to carry an extra bulk bag between fills. Whether you prefer 1000 lb mini-bulks, or 2000 lb bulk bags or seed totes, Bourgault has you covered!

The following testimonial speaks to the efficiency that can be experienced with a 7000 series air seeder. Jason Friesen of G&B Friesen Farms near Watson, SK owns a 7950 air seeder with the optional Saddle Tank. Jason was a prototype co-operator for the Bulk Boom and had the following to say:

“I filled the whole air seeder in 25-28 minutes with one person–the semi filled fertilizer and the Bulk Boom

filled canola seed. I filled the Saddle Tank using the Bulk Boom during the time it took to fill tank 1 with the conveyor.”

With the Bulk Boom’s dedicated remote control, the operator can manoeuvre the Bulk Boom while another user controls the auger or conveyor on the other side of the machine. If man power is limited, both remotes can be operated from the top of the tank while maintaining visibility of both sides.

7000 SERIES AIR SEEDERS

Bourgault is the first to release an ASC system on a class “A” distribution system. This has led to a number of challenges, as well as opportunities. One of the major hurdles was developing a system where drill sections can be controlled individually while maintaining balanced airflow and product distribution. We were inspired by tramlining kits, common in Europe and Australia, where individual runs can be either diverted or turned on and off. However, none of these systems blocked multiple runs at the same time. After countless hours in Bourgault’s dedicated distribution test facility we were able to develop a system whereby “clean air” can continue to flow to sections that are off. This serves to purge product from a run once it is turned off, as well as maintain balanced airflow to the remaining runs. As a result, our high standard for product distribution is maintained regardless if the system is operating with one or all section(s) open.

PRODUCT COMPOSITION---AN ONGOING CHALLENGE

The products that are applied during seeding are abrasive and/or corrosive, and may contain small particles and/or dust that can invade every nook and cranny. Several different valve designs were developed and tested before finding a valve that we felt confident would work consistently in this environment. It has taken a commitment from Bourgault to design components and specify materials that would stand up to these harsh conditions.

Another key item was designing a “live” sealing system that maintains a positive seal between the valve components and airstream. Extensive testing has proven that the plastic and stainless steel components used in the ASC valve assemblies are sure to provide years of dependable use in these harsh conditions. The ASC system is designed to run on Topcon’s X30 platform. Bourgault and Topcon engineers have

With rising input costs and larger drills, farmer demand for ASC has been high. Bourgault has invested time and resources to ensure that ASC meets our and your expectations.

collaborated to develop a system that accurately maps coverage and drives sections on and off based on GPS position. The Bourgault ASC system does not raise the openers when sections are turned off, this eliminates any concerns with skewing of the drill and results in a very simple, trouble-free and competitively priced system. To prevent the concern of openers travelling through already seeded ground, the X30 system has a headland manager feature that is capable of seeding the headlands last. The operator can offset the number of headlands desired, seed the middle of the field first and then finish the field by seeding the headlands last so that the openers never travel through seeded ground.

Bourgault’s relentless pursuit of a functional and reliable ASC system will pay dividends to our valued customers. A majority of existing 7000 Series air seeders are being retrofitted with ASC for the upcoming spring. Talk to your dealer soon about availability for 2015.

BOURGAULT DEALER

---Scott Lessmeister,Bourgault NA Sales Manager

The strong market demand for new technologies like ASC creates tremendous pressure to release products to the market prematurely. Over the years, Bourgault has done a very good job of ensuring that new products are well tested before they are released for sale. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few problems, but farmers have

learned to trust that when Bourgault releases a product it will be well-refined and field ready. This policy of erring on the side of caution may mean that our customers have to wait a little longer, but this is far better than rushing a product to market before it is ready to perform at a level that we expect and that is demanded by our most discerning customers.

BOURGAULT SERVICEBOURGAULT DEALERS

I Purchased a New DrillA basic guide to prepare your new Bourgault Seeding System. NOW WHAT?The purchase of any new equipment is typically the end result of many months of deliberating and contemplating the best choice of features, functionality/ease of use, productivity gains, maintenance costs, resale value and initial price that will position your farm to be more successful in the future.

The excitement and anticipation of putting this new equipment to use can quickly be replaced by the frustration and diffi culty of learning how to use it properly. The days of “winging-it” with your new equipment for the fi rst days/weeks are over!

The equipment is capable of so much more now than even a few years ago, but the increased technical complexity along with the potential for huge liability/losses associated should encourage you to take the time to learn how to properly operate this new equipment before the hectic seeding season. Learning how to properly use a new piece of equipment is no longer measured in hours...but days, with full confidence only coming after a week or more of

operation. Consider also that there have been record sales of new ag equipment the last couple of years, so your selling dealership may not have the resources you were once accustomed to for start-up support. Choosing to take the time to learn your new seeding system before the seeding rush will prepare you for success and allow you to enjoy not only the benefits of your investment, but the time you spend with it.

Below are some suggested steps to take to aid in making your new equipment experience a success:

Make an extensive list of items and work required to ensure the tractor, drill, and monitor are all matched and working. The purchase, installation, and set-up should be coordinated and completed well in advance of the seeding season.

What tractor will you be using?

Can it meet the hydraulic requirements for the air seeder fan(s) option and rates you will be applying? (Do I need to upgrade the tractor's hydraulic couplers to ¾"?)

Does it have an appropriate hitch for the seeding system?

What drill unit will your air seeder be coupled with?

Are any “upgrades” or changes needed to ensure compatibility?

Do the hydraulic lines on each unit match?

Does the product line(s) on the air seeder match the air kit on the drill?

Are the hitches compatible?

BOURGAULT SERVICEBOURGAULT DEALERS

What are your monitor requirements?

GPS signal is very important for the proper operation of the X30 system. Make sure you have the appropriate cables and connectors to complete the hook-up.

Install the X30, then test and confirm a signal is being received – do not leave this until the last minute!

NH3/Liquid systems need to be decided upon purchased and installed to again avoid the last minute problems associated with these items.

Are you installing a single section system or multiple section system?

Test the system thoroughly, as an incorrect cable or harness can set the entire process back weeks if not available.

Will you be performing precision seeding that requires variable rate maps?

It is very important to prepare yourself and the X30 Seeder Controller before you can successfully implement variable rate seeding into your daily seeding program.

If you plan to work with a third party provider, it will require a concerted effort to ensure they have all the information needed to complete your maps correctly and on time.

A sure-fire solution for best results with your new system is to provide your selling dealer your tractor for first time hook-up of the complete system (tractor, tillage unit, air-seeder and monitor).

Many problems can occur if assumptions are made regarding hook-ups and monitor installations, especially if multiple dealers are involved. When the dealer has the complete system they can perform the operational checks to ensure all systems are compatible and no items have been overlooked.

The Operator's Manual An Essential Part of the Success Equation

Once the above items are under control, you can focus on learning all about your new equipment.

There is no better resource for any new owner/operator than the Operator’s Manual. Even if you are a long time air seeder operator and know how they work, equipment has evolved. The benefit you will derive from your new drill

can only be maximized by understanding all the different features and how they work together. The details provided in the operator’s manual are essential.

In addition to the operator manual you can access other training resources on the Bourgault website. If you look under Service & Parts > Frequently Asked Questions, there are many very specific instructions related to the operation and set-up of the X30, calibration, GPS connections etc. Electronic copies of the operator’s manuals and parts information can also be viewed and printed from the Bourgault website by going to Service & Parts > Parts Books & Operator’s Manuals.

The operator’s manual and the resources on the website are particularly valuable when training on the X30 Seeder Controller. The X30 comes with a power supply, allowing you to bring it to your home/office where you can familiarize yourself with navigating to the different set-up screens and simulate actual seeding scenarios in comfort. Different set-ups screens (i.e. one for wheat, canola, barley etc.) can be completed prior to the seeding season so you can simply select it when required. Investing the time in self training during the winter will not only save you time in the seeding season but make your X30 experience that much more enjoyable.

Your selling dealership and Bourgault conduct a new owner’s clinic at their location each year prior to the seeding season. There you will receive in-person training on your X30 and Bourgault seeding system. Hands-on training from experienced techs will provide you a high degree of confidence in your new seeding system. We recommend reading the operator’s manual and experimenting with your X30 at home before attending. All the X30 monitors, op manuals will be shipped to your selling dealership before the end of January 2014, so make sure to pick up your monitor and manuals, even if your new drill has not been delivered yet.

Once spring arrives, take some time to “practice” some of the more important functions in the yard or on that first piece of dry ground in a field prior to actually going seeding. Not only does this build your confidence but will also alert you to any potential problems.

By following these important recommendations, you will be well on your way to getting the most out of your investment. Our success is making sure you are successful with your new Bourgault seeding system.

In 1978, Bill and Russell moved their business from Invermay to Wadena, Saskatchewan. It was at this time that Bill applied for a Bourgault

contract. Initially, Bourgault was hesitant to issue Wheatbelt a contract because their new building in Wadena wasn’t complete. Bill recalls “...because we weren’t set up in Wadena yet, Gerry [Bourgault] thought we were buying a cultivator for our own use”. Fortunately, Bourgault did sign Wheatbelt as a dealership as this has proven to be a mutually positive relationship for the past 35 years. Gerry Bourgault, who was Bourgault’s Sales Manager

at the time, remembers well that he was somewhat skeptical about Bill’s motives in asking for the dealership. He thought they were in it for a wholesale price on a cultivator. However, after meeting Bill and Russ face-to-face, it became very apparent that they would be "all-in" if they proved the cultivator to themselves by using it on their farm first. When the cultivator proved itself beyond their expectations, Bill was committed to selling Bourgault!

Bill remembers the first unit Wheatbelt actually sold: “...it was a 46-50 (4-row, fixed hitch cultivator) that we demoed and then sold to Arnold Korte who farmed in

the Annaheim area. At the time, Bourgault had a purchase incentive program running whereby Arnold was entered into a draw for a cruise and ended up winning! Bill further commented that the “...46-50 was one of the best, trouble-free cultivators that Bourgault ever built, that they are still in service, and still have their place.”

In 1980, Wheatbelt Sales was recognized by Bourgault as the first Bourgault dealership to sell $1,000,000.00 of Bourgault product.

Wheatbelt was involved in some of the first product developments at Bourgault. Bill recalls his partner Russell having an instrumental role in

the development of Bourgault’s floating hitch cultivator design as well as the Bourgault air seeder: “...Russell encouraged Bourgault to come out with the floating hitch design.” Gerry Bourgault remembers that he would very regularly consult Bill and Russ to obtain their thoughts on product development direction. Their insights were especially valuable because they were both a dealer and a farmer allowing them to see things from both perspectives.

Strong dealer partnerships such as the one that Bourgault has with Wheatbelt Sales is a key factor for successful farm operations. “This is a view that Bourgault Industries Ltd. holds as well.” says Gerry Bourgault. “Having had the privilege of working with Wheatbelt Sales Inc. over these 35 years has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. What an absolute blunder that would have been had we decided Bill and Russ were not for real?” says Gerry.

In 1979, Barry Enge of Invermay, was the first Wheatbelt Sales customer to put a Prasco air seeder on a Bourgault 34-38 cultivator. The following year, Barry purchased a Bourgault 138 air seeder. The Enge family has been buying Bourgault seeding and tillage equipment ever since!

In 2005, Barry passed away. His two sons, Justin and Korwin, have since taken over the family farm and continue to be very active in its operation.

Today, the Enge's crop about 14,000 acres with two Bourgault 6700 tanks, one Bourgault 6550 and a 5350 to run with their 3320, two 8910’s and an 8810.

Wheatbelt Sales is very grateful for all their business over the years and hope to continue to see Bourgault equipment in their yard!

Free Form Swath Rollers reduce crop loss by minimizing the effects of wind damage. Available in 3 different models (hydraulic, winch/cable and tow behind) Free Form Swath Rollers are designed to fit all makes and models of swathers. The patented adjustable width roller enables the operator to easily change the roller width forcing the windrow to be “tucked-in” on the ends maximizing resistance to wind gusts. KRIS MAYERLE TISDALE, SK

“The HF tire system [on our 3320-86] floats the

drill above the mud, keeping the front end from

dropping down; this allows us to go through alot

more spots than we were able to in the past.”

WIDE FRONT TIRES FLOAT YOU THROUGH WET SPOTS

LARGE DIAMETER WHEELS PREVENT THE DRILL FROM “DIVING” INTO SOFT SOILSFloat above the competition with the Hi-Flotation (HF) design

feature from Bourgault. Large, 800/65R32 main frame front

tires and 540/65R24 (singles) on the inner and outer wing caster

wheels provide exceptional flotation through wet spots.

3320-PHD: HF is optional on 3320-60, 3320-66 and

3320-76 and standard on 3320-86.

3720-ICD: HF is optional on 3720-60 and standard on the

3720-70. (Choose between full HF or HF Center configurations

for the 3720-60 and 3720-70).
