PREGNANCY FAQSWHAT IF IMISCARRY?OUR EXPERTSAYS...

‘Sadly, as many as one in fivepregnancies end in miscarriage, and the reasons aren’t clearlyunderstood. Most happen before12 weeks; it’s rare to have amiscarriage later on.It usually begins with bleeding andcramp-like pains. You may have ahospital check-up and might need anoperation to remove any tissue. Somewomen don’t miscarry immediately, and find out at their dating scan. Youmight be offered medication tocomplete the miscarriage, or anoperation, or you can choose to letnature take its course.Losing your baby is, of course, very distressing, but don’t blameyourself. It’s unlikely that youcould have caused it.If you’re pregnant again after amiscarriage, you may feelparticularly anxious. But mostwomen who’ve experienceda miscarriage go on to have a healthybaby. Remember, this pregnancy isdifferent, so try to stay positive.’Richard Smith, Obstetrician.

pregnant? How can i look after myself now I’m pregnant

world!Do I need to be careful what I eat?Yes, definitely, as there are certainfoods that could cause problemsfor your baby. See our health andwellbeing information starting onpage 16. Also, turn to page 17 foradvice on what foods to avoid.

Is too much caffeine bad in pregnancy?Too much caffeine can stop yourbaby growing properly and caneven cause miscarriage. Limityourself to 200mg a day.Tot up your caffeine:Mug of instant coffee ............................100mg Mug of filter coffee ................................140mg Cup of tea ................................................50mg Mug of tea ...............................................75mg Can of cola......................................up to 40mg Regular energy drink................................80mg 50g bar chocolate ...........................up to 50mgAvoid coffee shop coffees as theseare often higher in caffeine.

Can I continue exercising? If you were exercising before, youcan keep doing the same thing, aslong as it’s safe. Avoid activitiesthat might lead to a fall or involvean impact, and don’t suddenly startdoing any vigorous activities.Swimming, yoga and walking are allgood while you’re pregnant. If yougo to exercise classes, choose lowimpact classes or classes speciallydesigned for mums-to-be.

Yoga is another way to keepyourself fit and relaxed. You l earnhow to breathe fully and evenly, which can help you cope withstress and give you a technique touse in labour. You might find a localyoga class for pregnant women.

What about sex?In a normal pregnancy, sex won’tharm your baby or causea miscarriage. If you’ve had anybleeding in early pregnancy, yourGP may advise you not to have sexuntil 12–14 weeks. If you’re stillworried, or just don’t feel like it,that’s quite normal, especially ifyou’re suffering with sickness. Talkto your partner about it and maybestick to cuddling for the time being. Are tummy cramps normal? These often occur in pregnancy, but if you are worried or haveother symptoms like bleeding, pain when you wee, or fever, seeyour GP or midwife.

Do I need to becareful with medicines?Don’t take any drugs or medicines, including aspirin, ibuprofen, cold, flu and hay fever remedieswithout checking with yourpharmacist, unless they’represcribed for you by a GP whoknows you’re pregnant. Even naturalremedies need checking.

PREGNANCY FAQSWHAT IF IMISCARRY?OUR EXPERTSAYS...

What are trimesters? The length of pregnancy issplit into three periods calledtrimesters. The first covers weeks 0–13, the second weeks 14 – 26 andthe third weeks 27 – 40.

What’s happening to my body?Pretty much as soon as you getpregnant, your body responds tothe pregnancy hormonesproduced by the fertilised egg.Although some women have nofirst signs of pregnancy at all, some first signs include:l Tender breasts that may feelfuller or start to grow.l Tiredness.l Morning sickness(see pages 12 and 36).l Heightened sensitivity to smellsand tastes.l Needing to wee more often.l Feeling tearful and emotional.l Slight cramping, as the embryoembeds into your womb. When can I share my news? Many women keep their newsquiet until 12 or 13 weeks, whenthere’s far less risk of miscarriage. Ifyou just can’t keep it to yourself, maybe tell one or two close friends,so they can share your excitement.

Can I stop myself putting on too much weight? This is not the time to thinkabout losing weight as it mayharm your baby, although youshouldn’t be eating for two! However, if you are obese(extremely overweight) yourhealth is at risk and you may bereferred to a consultant. Alwaysask your midwife or GP beforecontinuing on a slimming plan orfollowing a diet, and avoid dietswhich cut out particular foodgroups, such as carbs or dairy, asthey may lack essentialnutrients. With a balanced dietand a healthy lifestyle, youshould be able to control yourweight easily. And remember,a lot of the weight you puton will simply be your baby, the placenta, the extrafluid in yourbloodstream, theamniotic fluid and yourgrowing breasts.
