Sandro Botticelli

#1 Original name was ALESSANDRO DI

MARIANO FILIPEPI

#2The name “Botticelli” was given to him by his older brother and means ("The Little Barrel").

#3 Born in the city-state of

Florence in 1444, where he lived most of the 66

years of his life. The Cestello Annunciation

#4 Botticelli wanted to

paint people that looked more real & lifelike than

those painted by the artists

of the Middle Ages.

#5 He wanted to create paintings that told a story!

His 3 most famous paintings…

His patron, or person who paid for his services, was a member of the Medici family.

Venus has

emerged from

the sea on a shell

which is driven

to the shore by

flying wind-gods

amidst a shower

of roses. She is

about to step on

to the land.

Botticelli's Venus is so beautiful that we do not notice

the unnatural length of her neck, the steep fall of her

shoulders and the odd way her left arm is hinged to

the body. It tells the story of how beauty came into

the world.

B). “Adoration of the Magi”

Why is the Medici family witnessing the birth of

Christ?!

Lorenzo the

Great!

C). “The Portrait of Giuliano de Medici”

Botticelli had his own workshop by 1470. He spent almost all of his

life working for the great families of Florence, especially the Medicifamily, for whom he

painted portraits, most notably the Giuliano de'

Medici.

This painting was done in honor of the assassinated member of the Medici family.

It shows his peacefully at rest.

What are some symbols in this

painting to indicate that the subject has

died?

• This drawing from the

sketchbook of

Leonardo da Vinci

shows the hanging of

one of the conspirators

in Giuliano’s

assassination.

Why would the assassination of Giuliano de Medici be such an

important event to artists?

#6 Botticelli died on May 17, 1510.

Botticelli was all, but forgotten for many years as many of his painting hid in the

Churches & Villas they were created for.

Today, “The Birth of Venus” can be found at the famous Uffizi Museum in Florence,

where there is a room named in his honor.
