For this purpose, it works closelywith some of the best biomedicalresearch groups in Spain to helpfacilitate their research, so as tomake it possible to convert theirdiscoveries into products, services,companies or projects that generatewealth and quality jobs.

In 2010, the Botín Foundationlaunched the Mind the Gap initiative,which invests human and financialresources to start-up biotechbusiness projects originating fromSpanish research institutions, thusnarrowing the gap between theworld of science and investors orindustry. EDUCATION

Support for education is one of thestrategic commitments of the BotínFoundation to generatedevelopment.

The aim is to introduce emotionaland social intelligence and thedevelopment of creativity inclassrooms to improve the quality of education and promote healthygrowth for children and youth. It’s also intended to help providefamilies and teachers with theknowledge and tools they need tohelp children develop capacities,attitudes and skills enabling them to be independent, competent,responsible and caring.

To achieve this aim, work is carriedout in three spheres:

• Engagement, through theResponsible Educationprogramme, which is alreadybeing conducted in over 200schools, in seven regions (Galicia,Cantabria, La Rioja, Navarra,Castilla y Leon, Madrid, andMurcia);

• Research, through the Platform for Innovation in Education;

• Training, through scholarships andthe Master’s in Emotional, Socialand Creative Education, a degreespecific to the University ofCantabria and unique in the world,which is intended to promote well-being and personal and social development in the schoolcontext, one of the mostimportant needs of today’ssociety.

“Responsible Education ensures that ourstudents will learn to ‘be,’ to ‘live together,’and will learn to ‘handle’ their emotionaland social world, and display theircreativity...”

RURAL DEVELOPMENTAND HERITAGE

Since its inception, the BotínFoundation has set itself theobjective of meeting the need todevelop models in rural areas that help facilitate their economic,social and cultural development,contributing value to those who live there.

In 2005, the Foundation chose to respond to this challenge bydesigning an integral model forsustainable growth andimplementing it in a specific region of Cantabria: The Nansa and Peñarrubia Valley.

The Rural Development, Heritageand Territory Programme in theNansa and Peñarrubia Valley, is aproposed transversal intervention to promote economic and socialdevelopment based on theterritory’s own heritage, its potentialand the initiative of its inhabitants.To eventually develop theprofitability of what is referred to as land-capital, so as to graduallyachieve a reversal of trendsoptimizing the entrepreneurialcapacity of its inhabitants andallowing them to lead a decent lifein rural areas, promoting socialdevelopment, preserving heritage,strengthening economicdevelopment and supportingeducation.
