    P E L A R G O N I U M S I D O I D E SABOUT:Pelargonium sidoides is a plant native to South Africa and has been used as a traditional medicine for centuries. Extracts of

    Pelargonium sidoides have been proven toreduce the duration and severity of the flu, especially with infections of the bronchia.HISTORY: Marketing of the remedy as a treatment for bronchitis and symptoms of common cold started in the 1990s resulting in full fledged

    clinical trials. In December 2005, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices approved a new license for the use of a patented extract

    (EPs7630)as a drug. Its a fully licensed liquid herbal medicine on the german herbal market. The drug is listed in the European Pharmacopoeia.

    COMMERCIAL STATUS:In 2006, German company Schwabe had a turnover ofEUR 80 millionfrom their single-ingredient product containing extract of Pelargonium

    sidoides root. This product, called Umckaloabo, has now been introduced in the USA

    as Umcka Cold Care by FLORA. A preparation of P sidoides mother tincture is

    marketed in the Ukraine, Russia and Latvia as Umckalor. Various liquid and sold

    preparations are avialble as herbal supplements in USA, Mexico and many othercountries.
