ROYAL TREATMENT Like all of Hawaii, Waikiki is rich in history, and the new Alohilani Resort pays homage to its past in a style best described as aloha-chic. Start with the name. Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Lili‘uokalani, loved this lush region so much that she nicknamed her beachside cottage “Kealohilani,” meaning heavenly brightness. The area had long been a gathering place for royalty and chiefs. It stands to reason the resort, which overlooks a prime stretch of white sand (60 steps from door to shore) would offer regal spaces for guests to lounge and linger. There’s the O Bar and its 280,000-gallon oceanarium filled with tropical fish. On the fifth floor, you’ll find the ocean-view infinity-edge pool (the only one of its kind in Waikiki); luxe cabanas; in-water lounges; and the Swell bar, serving drinks and delectables such as the ahi poke stack.
