A World Heritage Statement

“For a long time now heritage is no longer considered as a mere memory or a cultural reference, or even a place or an object. As the previous editions of “Heritage” (2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014) have proven, heritage is moving towards broader and wider scenarios, where it becomes often the driven forces for commerce, business, leisure and politics.”

Sustainable Development “is about meeting the needs of today without compromising the needs of future generations. It is about improving the standard of living by protecting human health, conserving the environment, using resources efficiently and advancing long-term economic competitiveness.” https://www.ec.gc.ca/dd-sd/

Sustainable Development (cont’d)

It requires the integration of environmental, economic and social priorities into policies and programs and requires action at all levels--citizens, industry, and governments.

Heritage and the Environment

Long before the environmental movement was even conceptualized. The steelpan pioneers of the 1930s in Trinidad gave birth to the environmental practice of the three “Rs”; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle when they chose discarded oil drums for making and developing steelpans.

Silent SpringRachel Carson biologist, writer and ecologist in her 1962 publication, Silent Spring inspired the modern environmental movement, which began in earnest a decade later. It is recognized as the environmental text that “changed the world.” She aimed at igniting a democratic activist movement that would not only question the direction of science and technology but would also demand answers and accountability. http://www.rachelcarson.org/SilentSpring.aspx

Before Silent SpringIt seems probable that the steel drum is destined to spread through still other parts of the world than the West Indies, perhaps in each country adapting itself to local popular-folk traditions.

Pete SeegerA Promise Kept

At a time when such commercial movies as “Fire Down Below” and “Island in the Sun” are seriously misrepresenting West Indian music and dance forms, Seeger promises the steel bandsmen that he will use their instrument to “tell the true story of Trinidad, as true as I can tell it, wherever I go.” Those who have seen his engaging stage presentation of the steel drum and its music know how well he has kept his word.
