BOSTON COLLEGE vs. MICHIGANPerennial powerhouses Boston College and Michigan close out the holiday season with a big-time non-conference battle at Kelley Rink. Saturday’s showdown between the Eagles and Wolverines marks just the third time Michigan has taken on BC in Chestnut Hill (BC won 5-3 on Dec 2. 1988 and 5-1 on Dec. 2, 1990). These two programs are more familiar with one another on neutral sites as Michigan holds a 7-4 advantage in 11 meetings. BC has protected home against Michigan with a 2-0 mark on The Heights. Last season, Boston College and Michigan opened each other’s seasons at Yost Ice Arena in which U of M skated away with a 3-1 victory on Oct. 10, 2013. In all, the Wolverines hold the 12-6 advantage as Saturday marks the 19th all-time meeting. The first time these teams met was the 1947 NCAA Tournament. Michigan skated away with a 6-4 (OT) victory at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colo. Since taking the post at Boston College, Jerry York is 4-3 against Michigan’s Red Berenson.

MARKING MICHIGANMichigan opened the season ranked the No. 8 team in country but had a difficult start to the season to push the Wolverines out of the USCHO.com poll by the fifth week. The Wolverines skidded off to a 2-5 start while four of those games came against two Hockey East opponents. After losing at Ferris State to start the season (4-3), Michigan welcomed New Hampshire and lost in its home opener, 5-1. U of M responded with a 2-1 triumph and then traveled to Boston the following weekend to defeat UMass Lowell soundly (8-4) and lost at Boston University (3-2). But as of late, the Wolverines have been on fire, winners of four straight outings and have outscored their opponents, 25-6, over the course of that span. In their last outing, Michigan buried four power play goals against rival Ohio State to send U of M to an 8-3 win at home following a 6-0 shutout out of Rensselaer the weekend before. Senior forward Zach Hyman leads the Wolverines in scoring with seven goals and 10 assists, tied for 16th, overall, in all of college hockey. Alex Kile (9-6-15) and Dylan Larkin (2-13-15) are both averaging over a point per game (1.07 ppg) and are each tied for 40th overall in the NCAA. Kyle’s 0.64 goals per game is tied for eighth best in the game and is only one of two skaters in the country with six power play goals accredited to their name. First-year defenseman, Zach Werenski is tied for eighth in the country amongst all defensemen with 0.86 points per game (3-9-12). Larkin’s point total is good enough to slot him as one of the top five skaters amongst all rookies. Sophomore goaltender Zach Nagelvoort has seen the brunt of the work, amassing a 6-5-0 mark with a 2.66 goals against average (44th) and .908 save percentage (46th). Nagelvoort and the Michigan defense have struggled, ranked 41st in the NCAA after surrendering 2.93 goals per game. The offense, however, has been clicking on all cylinders. U of M touts the second-ranked unit in the country as one of only two clubs in college hockey averaging over four goals per game (4.07 gpg). The Wolverines’ power play unit is converting at a clip of 20 percent (11-of-55) and owns the 11th-best scoring margin In the game as a +1.14.

COACHES’ CORNERSaturday’s game will have historic implications as the two active winningest coaches in college hockey history will square off at Kelley Rink. BC’s Jerry York is college hockey’s all-time winningest coach, having won his 971st game at the NCAA level on Dec. 6. Michigan’s Red Berenson, having accrued his 796th victory after defeating Ohio State on Dec. 5, is currently fourth all-time. Between the coaches, they have totaled 1,767 victories over the course of 74 combined years behind the bench.

BATTLING THE BIG TENLast season, the Eagles posted a 3-2-1 mark against Big Ten foes, including an 0-1-1 mark against Minnesota, 2-0 total against Penn State, 1-0 mark against Wisconsin and an 0-1 mark against Michigan. BC lost to Minnesota in the Eagles’ first B1G matchup of 2014-15, 6-2, on Nov. 28. Amongst the Big Ten as a whole in BC history, the Eagles are 44-56-5 (.443) against the conference.

- Boston College’s Austin Cangelosi has accounted for five points in his last two games (2-3-5)

- Saturday’s game will feature college hockey’s two active winningest coaches of all-time as as Red Berenson (796) and Jerry York (971) do battle

- Michigan’s Zach Werenski and BC’s Noah Hanifin are the first and second youngest players in college hockey, respective

- Boston College’s 3-6 mark in November is the lowest since a 0-3-3 total in 2007-08 - BC went on to win the national title in 2008 #InYorkWeTrust

MOVIN’ ON UPFollowing the three-point weekend against New Hampshire, Boston College is now in a tie for sixth place with nine points in Hockey East play. The Eagles upcoming schedule wil have BC play a conference game until Jan. 9 at Northeastern.

BUCKING THE TRENDOn Dec. 5-6, Boston College reversed a few downward trends. Heading into the New Hampshire game on Dec. 5, Boston College was 0-4-0 when trailing after two periods. Austin Cangelosi’s game-tying goal averted the Eagles from slipping to 0-5-0. On Dec. 6, BC was down 1-0 at home against UNH and were 0-4-0 when trailing after the first period. It marked the first BC rallied after being down in the first period to win the game.

BABY BIRD(S)Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the second-youngest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

NO-PANIC NOVEMBERBoston College posted a 3-6-0 mark in the month of November, finishing with a .333 winning percentage. That mark stands as the Eagles’ roughest November since the 2007-08 season. Boston College did not win a game in November 2007, finishing with an 0-3-3 mark for a winning percentage of .250. That year, the Eagles turned it around by winning the Beanpot, Hockey East Tournament championship and 2008 National Championship in Denver. BC is 1-0-1 this month.

REACHING NEW “HEIGHTS”On. Nov. 21, 2014, at Massachusetts, the Eagles secured a 5-3 victory to make Jerry York the winningest coach in Boston College hockey history. Heading into the contest, York was even with his former coach John “Snooks” Kelley at 501 total victories. Following the 5-3 decision, York holds the claim as both the winningest coach at his alma mater (503-249-68) and in college hockey history (971-584-103).

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNTScoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College has scored at least one goal or more in five of its seven victories thus far. Conversely, the Eagles are 2-7 when denied a power play goal. In all, Boston College has converted six of its 61 chances at a rate of 9.81 percent which ranks 49th in the country right now.

REMEMBER THE LAST TIME BC LOST FOUR GAMES? The last time Boston College lost four consecutive games, you would have to look back to the 2003-04 season when the Eagles lost to UNH (3-2 - Feb. 28), Maine (3-0 and 3-4, March 5-6) and BU (3-2, March 11). That season, the Eagles went on to compete in the 2004 Frozen Four, in Boston, eventually falling to Maine in the national semifinal, 2-1, on April 8, 2004. BC snapped its recent four-game slide in a 3-2 triumph at Michigan State on Nov. 14.

EagleHallCALLOne-third of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame - Class of 2014 - was made up from the men’s ice hockey contingent. These three Eagles were enshrined into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 17, and were recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Clemson.

WERESTILLNOTINGAMERICAN EAGLESThatcher Demko, Noah Hanifin, Ian McCoshen, Steve Santini and Alex Tuch will represent Boston College as five of 33 skaters to be selected for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster as announced by USA Hockey on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Once the final roster is announced on Wednesday, Dec. 24, the U.S. National Junior Team will participate in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship from Dec. 26, 2014 – Jan. 5, 2015 in both Montreal and Toronto, Canada

BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

#TEAMDREWBROWNHockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. For those that would like to help donate to Brown’s cause, the fundraising campaign is called “Dropping Mitts Against Cancer”. More information is located here: gofundme.com/93da50Jeff Farkas played four years on the Eagles’ hockey

team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-52-14 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.

The sport of ice hockey at Boston College - as we know it today - would not exist without the efforts of William M. Hogan. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at BC, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. When the team gathered at Boston Arena for its first varsity game, the players unanimously voted Hogan as team captain.

Marty Reasoner played three years on the Eagles’ hockey team. Leading the team in scoring in each of his seasons, Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, and twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors. He helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. Reasoner represented the U.S. in the 1996 and 1997 World Junior Championships, and the 2002, 2003 and 2006 World Championships.

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Last year’s trio of freshmen were the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Forrest (2001), Ben Eaves (2002), Chuck Kobasew (Canada; 2002), Patrick Eaves (2003, 2004), Ryan Shannon (2003), Dan Bertram (Canada; 2006, 2007), Cory Schneider (2005, 2006), Nathan Gerbe (2006, 2007), Jimmy Hayes (2009), Chris Kreider (2010, 2011), Brian Dumoulin (2011), Patrick Wey (2011), Bill Arnold (2012) and Johnny Gaudreau (2013).

Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 462 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (461) and North Dakota (456) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .629 (447-249-74) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 971-584-103 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.
