BOSTON COLLEGE vs. BROWNBoston College and Brown will initiate the Ledyard Classic at Dartmouth on Friday afternoon, meeting up for the second time in as many seasons. When the Eagles rattled off a 19-game unbeaten streak last year, BC won 17 contests alongside a pair of ties. The Bears were one of those squads to draw even with the Eagles during their hot streak, skating to a 3-3 stalemate on Jan. 11, 2014, at Meehan Auditorium. That tie stopped up a six-game winning streak against Brown. One would have to go back to the late 1970 to have seen a Brown victory over BC. The Bears defeated Boston College, 4-2, on Nov. 27, 1978, in Providence, R.I. Boston College and Brown have displayed a penchant for going the distance. In five of their last nine encounters, the two teams have skated to overtime. BC owns a 2-0-3 mark in those decisions. In all, Boston College owns a 47-18-7 mark against the Ivy League foe while head coach Jerry York is 2-0-1 against the Bears behind BC’s bench.

BROWN BEAR BEATBrown holds a 3-8 mark with a 1-7 win-loss total in ECAC play heading into the Ledyard Classic. The Bears finished 2014 on a high note, defeating Rensselaer at home, 4-2, to close out the first half on Dec. 6. Before that victory, Brown had lost 8-of-9 contests. The Bears’ other two wins came against Army (4-2 – Oct. 31) and Connecticut (1-0 – Nov. 29). BC lost to UConn on Nov. 5. Brown’s offense has been shutout four times this season, including three-consecutive outings from Nov. 21-30 (Cornell | UConn | Holy Cross). Senior forward Matt Lorito leads Brown’s offense with six points, but five of those points have come in the back of the net. Lorito’s 0.56 goals per game ties him for 17th in the country. Lorito is Brown’s bright spot in the 56th-ranked offense as the Bears are averaging 1.65 goals per game. Defensively, Brown splits the goaltending tandem of sophomores Tyler Steel and Tim Ernst. Steel is 1-6-0 with a .872 save percentage and a 4.66 goals against while Ernst is 2-2-0 with .916 and 2.83 credentials. Brown’s defense is last in the ECAC, surrendering 3.91 goals per game. Due to being blanked four times, Brown ranks last in college hockey with a -2.27 scoring margin.

BOSTON COLLEGE vs. DARTMOUTHThe Eagles stay the Ivy League route when they return to the rink to take on host Dartmouth Saturday night. Boston College and Dartmouth have not faced off since the 2012-13 season when the Big Green skated down to The Heights on Nov. 24, 2012. Boston College won handily in a 6-3 decision after Johnny Gaudreau notched a then career best five points (2-3-5). After the Eagles won that contest, BC had won 10-consecutive games and 29-of-30 and gave Boston College its best start to a season (10-1-0) since the 1978-79 season. Saturday’s meeting marks the 92nd installment of the Boston College – Dartmouth series as the Eagles own a significant 62-29 advantage. In those 91 games, BC has tallied 439 goals to Dartmouth’s 345.

BIG GREEN BRIEFDartmouth will put its 6-4-1 record on the line against Denver before meeting up with Eagles in the tournament finale. The Big Green is tied for seventh in the ECAC standings after finishing with a 3-4-1 league mark in the first half. Dartmouth is riding a hot streak heading into its tournament, winning four of its last five contests, including a 2-0 shutout of No. 1 Boston University on Nov. 30. Dartmouth also started the season with a big win early on, beating defending national champion Union in overtime on Nov. 7, 4-3. Tyler Sikura leads the Big Green in points (13), goals (5) and assists (8), ranking him as the 20th-most prolific point getter (1.18 ppg) in the country. Brett Patterson staffs Dartmouth’s blue line, and has tallied seven points through nine games (1-6-7) and his 0.78 points per game has him tied as the 12th highest defensive scorer. Goalie James Kruger anchors Dartmouth’s 11th-ranked defense, possession college hockey’s 12th-best save percentage (.932) and 14th-best goals against average (1.87). Thanks for Kruger’s two shutouts, the Big Green is surrendering only 2.09 goals per game. Offensively, Dartmouth ranks 21st after scoring 3.00 goals per game. The Big Green penalty kill is tied for 16th in the land, stopping 87.5 percent of the opposition.

BOSTON COLLEGE AT THE LEDYARD CLASSICThis weekend’s entry into the Ledyard Classic at Dartmouth marks Boston College’s second go-round in the holiday tournament in Hanover, N.H. The last time BC traveled north for this two-game tourney was the 2010-11 season. The Eagles skated past Colgate (6-5 - Dec. 30, 2010) and Mercyhurst (4-1 – Dec. 31, 2010) to win the tournament. BC and Dartmouth did not play in the 2010-11 Ledyard Classic installment.

DETERMINED IN DECEMBERBoston College finished the month of December with an unbeaten 2-0-1 mark. Over the course of their last nine games in December, the Eagles are 6-1-2 with their lone loss coming against Minnesota in the Mariucci Classic on Dec. 30, 2012.

FIRST-HALF REPORTBoston College closed out the first half of the season with a 9-7-1 win-loss total, marking the first time the Eagles have not reached 10 or more victories since the 2008-09 season when BC capped the opening half with a 9-5-2 record. Four Eagles are tied atop the team lead with 12 points as sophomore Chris Calnan leads the team with seven goals scored.

MOVIN’ ON UPFollowing the three-point weekend against New Hampshire, Boston College is now in a tie for sixth place with nine points in Hockey East play. The Eagles upcoming schedule wil have BC play a conference game until Jan. 9 at Northeastern.

BUCKING THE TRENDOn Dec. 5-6, Boston College reversed a few downward trends. Heading into the New Hampshire game on Dec. 5, Boston College was 0-4-0 when trailing after two periods. Austin Cangelosi’s game-tying goal averted the Eagles from slipping to 0-5-0. On Dec. 6, BC was down 1-0 at home against UNH and were 0-4-0 when trailing after the first period. It marked the first BC rallied after being down in the first period to win the game.

BABY BIRD(S)Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the second-youngest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

REACHING NEW “HEIGHTS”On. Nov. 21, 2014, at Massachusetts, the Eagles secured a 5-3 victory to make Jerry York the winningest coach in Boston College hockey history. Heading into the contest, York was even with his former coach John “Snooks” Kelley at 501 total victories. Following the 5-3 decision, York holds the claim as both the winningest coach at his alma mater (503-249-68) and in college hockey history (971-584-103).

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNTScoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College has scored at least one goal or more in five of its nine victories thus far. Conversely, the Eagles are 4-7-1 when denied a power play goal.

EagleHallCALLOne-third of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame - Class of 2014 - was made up from the men’s ice hockey contingent. These three Eagles were enshrined into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 17, and were recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Clemson.

WERESTILLNOTINGAMERICAN EAGLESThatcher Demko, Noah Hanifin, Ian McCoshen, Alex Tuch and Miles Wood (incoming in ‘15-’16) will represent Boston College as five of 23 skaters for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team roster as announced by USA Hockey on the night of Dec. 25. Through three games of the opening round, Team USA is 3-0 with victories over Finland (Dec. 26 - 2-1), Germany (Dec. 28 - 6-0) and Slovakia (Dec. 29 - 3-0). The final first-round contests takes palce against Canada on New Year’s Eve.

BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-52-14 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.

The sport of ice hockey at Boston College - as we know it today - would not exist without the efforts of William M. Hogan. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at BC, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. When the team gathered at Boston Arena for its first varsity game, the players unanimously voted Hogan as team captain.

Marty Reasoner played three years on the Eagles’ hockey team. Leading the team in scoring in each of his seasons, Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, and twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors. He helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. Reasoner represented the U.S. in the 1996 and 1997 World Junior Championships, and the 2002, 2003 and 2006 World Championships.

WHERE THE OFFENSE STANDSThrough 17 games, Boston College is one of 22 clubs averaging over three goals per game. The Eagles are scoring at a rate of 3.06 goals per game, ranking them 19th in all of college hockey and fourth in Hockey East.

TOP BIRDSBoston College has four skaters tied for the team lead in points, including junior defensemen Teddy Doherty (4-8-12) and Michael Matheson (1-11-12). Chris Calnan (7-5-12) is the Eagles’ goal scoring leader while Alex Tuch (5-7-12) also has 12 poins this far.

CAL’S GONE CRAZYChris Calnan has accounted for four points in his last two outings, including his first-career multi assist performance on Dec. 13 against Michigan. On Dec. 6 against UNH, Calnan secured his second two-goal outburst in six games, turning the trick original on Nov. 21 at UMass. In both of those games, Calnan secured the game-winning goal. Not only was Calnan’s game-winner a career first at UMass, so was his power play tally. Calnan also posted his first-career three-game point streak (11/21-28).

QUINN CANQuinn Smith notched his second-career two-goal performance with a pair against Michigan on Dec. 13. Smith has now accounted for four points in his most recent outings. The Fairfield, Conn., native is two tallies shy of matching his sophomore season with eight goals. Smith delivered his first game-winning goal and fifth of his career at Michigan State on Nov. 14. Smith has already surpassed his goal total (2) from his junior season. Smith is BC’s third-leading career goal scorer with 17.

CAGED UP CANGEAustin Cangelosi went scoreless in his first 14 games this season and then broke out for a five-point weekend (2-3-5) against UNH on Dec. 5-6, including a goal in both games. The Estero, Fla., native tallied BC’s first game-tying goal

of the season on Dec. 5 and followed that with another on Dec. 6. In both outings, Cangelosi logged an assist or more on Dec. 5 and added a pair on Saturday, accounting for his fifth-career three-point outing and first since the Penn State game on Dec. 28, 2013, at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh. The sophomore has now scored 12 goals as an Eagle.

COMIN’ STRAIGHT AT YADestry Straight potted his first game-winning goal of the season en route to a three-point performance, including two goals and an assist, against Maine on Nov. 22. The West Vancouver, B.C., native last tallied three points in a game when he secured a hat trick against Penn State at the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center on Dec. 28, 2013. Straight followed with a goal against Minnesota, marking his first back-to-back scoring nights since March 8-9, 2013. Straight is BC’s current career leader in goals scored with 21.

ZACH ATTACHSRookie Zach Sanford did his duty dishing the puck, recording six assists in his first nine games as an Eagle. In his 10th game, Sanford found the back of the net on Nov. 14. Sanford has since scored two goals and seven assists.

FITZ BLITZRyan Fitzgerald exploded for a two-goal performance against Boston University on Nov. 7, marking his second outburst in four games. The North Reading, Mass., native had never scored a pair of goals in a game until the Denver contest on Nov. 1. Heading into this weekend, Fitzgerald is tied for 61st in goals scored, averaging 0.41 goals per game.

POWER HOURRyan Fitzgerald and Adam Gilmour have both netted two power play goals on the season and are currently tied for 14th in Hockey East. Gilmour is also the first player to score a pair of power play goals in a game for Boston College since Patrick Brown scored a pair against Maine on Jan. 18, 2014.

GAUDREAU 2.0Sophomore Matthew Gaudreau has dressed in 11 games this season, scoring a goal in two of them already. The Carneys Point, N.J., native also scored in back-to-back games on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14, marking his first-career point streak. Gaudreau has played in 19 career games and netted his first-career goal against Army on Nov. 10. He also registered his first-career assist on Nov. 22 against Maine.

GIMMIE MOUR GILMOURFollowing his two power play goal performance and an assist with a career-high six shots against UMass on Oct. 25, Adam Gilmour picked up Boston College’s s e co n d - co n s e c u t i v e Hockey East honor after claiming Player of the Week honors on Monday, Oct. 27. One of Gilmour’s two 5-on-3 goals proved to the game winner against the Minutemen. The opening night against Colorado

College, Gilmour doled out a pair of assists for a five-point weekend. Gilmour now has a pair of two-goal games under his belt his first occurring against Boston University on Jan. 17, 2014. Saturday’s three-point performance also stood as the fourth of his career. Gilmour is tied for fifth in team points with 11 (2-9-11).

CASH CAMCam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. It marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since March 15, 2013. The following outing against Colorado College on oct. 24, Spiro scored his first-career two-goal game in his 28th outing as an Eagle. It also markeds the senior’s second-career two-point game. The last time Spiro notched two points was a one goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012.

EagleDefenseDEFENSIVE POSITIONINGBoston College’s defense is tied for 29th, surrendering 2.53 goals per game. That mark is currently tied for sixth in Hockey East.

BLUE-LINE BOPPERSThe Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. Boston College has scored 52 goals on the season with 10 coming from the twigs of the blue liners. In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen). Upon conclusion of the first half of play, defensemen Teddy Doherty and Michael Matheson were tied with two other forwards for the most points on the team (12).

CONNECTING THE DOHTSJunior Teddy Doherty earned BC’s first Hockey East award of the season after landing Defensive Player of the Week honors. Doherty not only accounted for his second-career three-point performance with a goal and two assists, he also notched his first-career game-winning goal and was a game-high +4 on Oct. 18. Following his third mutli-point performance (1-1-2) against Maine on Nov. 22, Doherty is tied for 19th amongst all defensemen in scoring with 0.71 points per game (4-8-12).

McCAUTIONSophomore defensemen Ian McCoshen scored his second-career game-winning goal and first of the season against Michigan on Dec. 13. McCoshen has scored a goal in each game against Michigan.

HANDS UP FOR HANIFINNewcomer Noah Hanifin scored his first-career goal as an Eagle against Colorado College and followed that with his first-career mutli-point game with both assists on Adam Gilmour’s 5-on-3 tallies against UMass. At UMass on Nov. 21, Hanifin registered his first-career three-point performance with a goal and two helpers.

MATHESON HITS 50Junior captain Michael Matheson turned in his third-career playmaker (three assists) in the win against UMass on Oct. 25 with his last one taking place against Providence on Jan. 10, 2014. On his last assist, Matheson recorded his 50th-career point in his 78th game donning the maroon and gold. Matheson leads the Eagles with 11 assists thus far.

POWER PLAY PLAUDITSSophomore Ian McCoshen not only score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame agaisnt RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights. McCoshen has also doled out three assists thus far.

SANTINI LOOKS TO RETURN TO THE ICESteve Santini missed the remainder of the first half of the season following scheduled wrist surgery Oct. 28, 2014. Santini did not make the World Junior Team because he was still rehabilitating, but looks to return to the ice for the maroon and gold soon in the second half.


EagleDefenseLAST LINE OF DEFENSESophomore goaltender Thatcher Demko is 9-6-1 on the season and currently ranks 25th in the NCAA in goals against average with a mark of 2.12. Demko’s save percentage of .927 is good for 23rd in college hockey. Demko’s winning percentage of .594 is 26th in the country. Following his freshman campaign, Demko was drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman, Demko turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

CAREER DAY(S) FOR DEMKOIn three of Thatcher Demko’s four starts between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, the San Diego, Calif., native set a new career or matched it. On Nov. 29, desptie suffering a 1-0 loss at Providence, Demko posted a new career best with 37 saves. The following outing on Dec. 5 at New Hampshire, Demko matched that same number to post respective 37-save performances. Before the first half concluded, Demko stoned 41 shots against Michigan to help the Eagles preserve a 5-1 win against the Wolverines are U of M outshot BC, 42-29, on Dec. 13.

DEMKO DOLING IT OUTThathcher Demko recorded his fifth-career assist and first since the season opener at UMass Lowell on Oct. 10. Demko’s helper came on Austin Cangelosi’s goal on Dec. 6.

RAD BRADThe Nov. 11 game against Harvard marked senior Brad Barone’s first start in six career games played. For his career, the Medfield, Mass., native owns a 3.31 goals against average and a .881 save percentage.

AGE IS NOTHING BUT A NUMBERFreshman defenseman Noah Hanifin, the second-youngest player in college hockey, is currently projected as the third-overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

COLD-BLOODED (PENALTY) KILLERSBoston College has the 15th-ranked penalty killing unit in the country and fifth best in all of Hockey East. The Eagles have denied 65-of-74 chances with a stoppage rate of 88.2 percent. Last season, the Eagles’ penalty-killing unit eked out Quinnipiac by one-tenth of a percentage point for college hockey’s top penalty-killing corps.

BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Last year’s trio of freshmen were the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Forrest (2001), Ben Eaves (2002), Chuck Kobasew (Canada; 2002), Patrick Eaves (2003, 2004), Ryan Shannon (2003), Dan Bertram (Canada; 2006, 2007), Cory Schneider (2005, 2006), Nathan Gerbe (2006, 2007), Jimmy Hayes (2009), Chris Kreider (2010, 2011), Brian Dumoulin (2011), Patrick Wey (2011), Bill Arnold (2012) and Johnny Gaudreau (2013).

Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 464 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (462) and North Dakota (457) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .629 (447-249-74) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 973-584-103 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

Phil ’82 and Kim Schiller have long loved Boston College Hockey. In 2012, they chose to endow the head men’s ice hockey coach position, currently held by Jerry York. The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.
