BOSTON COLLEGE vs. COLORADO COLLEGEBoston College had owned Colorado College since the late 60s, going 9-0-1 against the Tigers before that fateful NCAA West Regional on March 26, 2011. After capturing the 2011 Hockey East Tournament title, BC earned the top seed in the West Regional and was flying high into its first-round matchup against CC. Boston College goalie John Muse, who had been 8-0 with a 1.95 goals-against average in NCAA tournament play and starred on a pair of title teams in 2010 and 2008, was pulled after two periods with the Eagles (30-8-1) trailing 7-2. The Eagles eventually fell, 8-4, and have been waiting to exact revenge since their early exit. Boston College is in control of the overall series, 12-5-1, having gone unbeaten in 30 years (9-0-1) against Colorado College from Dec. 30, 1968 to Dec. 27, 1998. The Eagles won the first two meetings on Jan. 2, 1949 (6-5 OT) and March 18, 1949 (7-3) before the Tigers claimed the next three of four. 1,309 will have elapsed since CC upended the Eagles’ NCAA championship hopes in 2011.

EYE OF THE TIGER (…again)Here is a random note before getting into Colorado College’s early goings. Friday’s home opener marks the first time in BC hockey history the Eagles have played two different teams nicknamed the Tigers in back-to-back games. RIT’s nickname is also the Tigers.

Colorado College started off the season at home against Alabama-Huntsville, eking out a pair of one-goal victories, 3-2 and 4-3, respectively on Oct. 10-11. Last weekend, the Tigers remained in Colorado Springs and were swept by North Dakota, 3-1 and 7-2, in that order, to start off their conference slate in an 0-2 hole. Freshman Teemu Kivihalme (2-1-3) and junior Peter Maric (0-3-3) lead the Tigers in points scored while juniors Cody Bradley and Hunter Fejes both have a pair of goals alongside Kivihalme. Both goalies have been tested as sophomore Tyler Marble has started three of four games while rookie Chase Perry earned the nod once. Marble possesses a .892 save percentage and 3.49 goals against average while Perry has constructed a 3.60 goals against and .853 save rate in 83:16 minutes of work. The Tigers’ offense is tied for 32nd in the NCAA with 2.50 gpg game and the defense is 43rd, surrendering 3.75 goals per game. Through four games, the Tigers are the most penalized club in college hockey, being whistled for 16.5 PIMs per game. Colorado College has also given up an average of two power play goals per game, killing off only 11-of-19 opportunities, which ranks second to last in college hockey.

BOUNCING BACKBoston College has actually lost five of its last eight season opening contests dating back to the 2007-08 season, including last Friday’s 5-2 setback at UMass Lowell. With the Eagles’ 6-2 triumph over RIT, Boston College has now won all five games following a season-opening loss. In those instances, the Eagles have advanced to the NCAA Tournament on three of four occassions and won two national titles (2008 & 2010).

COMING BACK TO CONTESince Jerry York has been the head coach at Boston College, the Eagles possesses a 12-7-1 record in home opening games on The Heights. Dating back to the 2007-08 season, the Eagles are 5-1-1 in the first game of the year at Kelley Rink.

HISTORY (STILL) IN THE MAKINGThe Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach of Boston College, Jerry York, enters his 43rd season of coaching college hockey. Not only is York the winningest coach in the game’s history, having amassed 964 victories and a win loss total of 964-578-102 (.619), York is approaching another historic benchmark at his alma mater. Now in his 21st season as BC bench boss, York is just three victories away from earning his 500th victory as Eagles head coach. York is 497-243-68 (.659) in 20 seasons.

HOCKEY HALL CALLThree members of the Boston College hockey family were enshrined as part of the 2014 Class of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame, including Jeff Farkas ('00), William Hogan (‘33) and Marty Reasoner (‘98). Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998.

SHUSHING SHUTOUTSBoston College has not been shutout in 101 games. That is the longest active streak in the country. Denver is in second, having scored a goal in 70-consecutive games while Union is in third at 68.

BABY BIRD(S)Highly-touted rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. University of Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the second-youngest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

CHANGING OF THE GUARDFollowing yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 443-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East.

BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICENot only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINKBoston College celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 288-111-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).

EagleHallCALLOne-third of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame - Class of 2014 - was made up from the men’s ice hockey contingent. These three Eagles were enshrined into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 17, and were recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Clemson.

WERESTILLNOTINGBIG TEN BRUSH-UPFourteen of the country’s most storied college hockey programs will compete this fall in the second Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge. Nine of 12 Hockey East institutions will join five of the six Big Ten schools in 20 designated games to be played between October 10 and November 29, with 10 games scheduled in Hockey East arenas and 10 in Big Ten venues. Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge Cup will be presented to the conference that records the most points from the 20 contests. Teams will earn two points for a win, one point for a tie and a bonus point will be awarded for a road win.

EAGLES TABBED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLLBoston College has been chosen to finish second in the 2014-15 Hockey East Preseason Poll, voted on by the league coaches and announced at the conference’s annual media day at TD Garden on Sept. 29. The Eagles received three-of-12 first-place votes. This marks the first time in seven seasons and just the third in the last 16 years that Boston College has not been selected as the favorite or co-favorite to win the league title.

Jeff Farkas played four years on the Eagles’ hockey team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-52-14 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.

The sport of ice hockey at Boston College - as we know it today - would not exist without the efforts of William M. Hogan. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at BC, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. When the team gathered at Boston Arena for its first varsity game, the players unanimously voted Hogan as team captain.

Marty Reasoner played three years on the Eagles’ hockey team. Leading the team in scoring in each of his seasons, Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, and twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors. He helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. Reasoner represented the U.S. in the 1996 and 1997 World Junior Championships, and the 2002, 2003 and 2006 World Championships.

MOVIN’ ON UPFollowing the Eagles’ six-goal explosion against RIT on Oct. 18, Boston College’s offense is now tied for fifth in the country, averaging 4.00 goals per game.

FITZ ON THE FRITZSophomore forward Ryan Fitzgerald is the lone Eagle to have scored consecutive goals in BC’s two outings this season. The North Reading, Mass., has scored goals in straight games four times in his career and with his goal, he tied Destry Straight for the most career goals (15) on the roster.

ROOKIE PARTYFreshmen Zach Sanford and Alex Tuch both recorded their first points as Eagles against RIT on Oct. 18. Sanford exploded for a playmaker, registering three assists. Tuch scored early in the third period in front of the hometown crowd, just a few miles from where he grew up.

SILKY SMOOTHJunior Brendan Silk posted his first-career multi-point game with a pair of assists in the victory against RIT on Oct. 18. That contest marked the junior’s 75th-career game.

CASH CAMCam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. it marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since his sophomore season after scoring a goal against Vermont on March 15, 2013.

HEAVY LIES THE CROWNBoston College lit the lamp the most times in college hockey in 2013-14. The Eagles tallied an NCAA-best 164 goals. BC was the only team in the country to average over four goals per game (4.10 gpg). Not only could BC boast the highest scoring clip, but the Eagles also recorded the top scoring margin in the country, beating opposing teams by a margin of 1.75 goals per game.

POWER PLAY PUNCHThe Eagles can credit a good portion of their

success to their power play unit from 2013-14. The Eagles converted 34-of-140 chances with the man advantage, having finished with nation’s fifth-best mark of 24.3 percent.

COUNT ON CALSophomore forward Chris Calnan scored BC’s first goal of the season, upping his career total to five in 39 games played.

NEXT NUMBER UPThe Boston College offense will look to its young talent to replace the Eagles’ “Big Three” line ofJohnny Gaudreau, Kevin Hayes and Bill Arnold that constituted 43 percent of BC’s production last season. Gaudreau, the program’s first Hobey Baker winner since 2000 and the most prolific output in all of college hockey since the 2002-03 season, left after his junior season while Hayes, Arnold and former captain Patrick Brown all graduated. Those four combined for 92 goals, 136 assists and 228 points, just a shade under half the offensive product from the 2013-14 club.

EagleDefenseDEFENSIVE DOLDRUMSBoston College is 1-1 on the season, but still surrendering 3.50 goals per game. That mark is tied for 39th in the NCAA and is ninth in Hockey East.

BLUE-LINE BOPPERSThe Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen).

CONNECTING THE DOHTSJunior defenseman Teddy Doherty earned Boston College’s first Hockey East award of the season after landing Defensive Player of the Week honors. Doherty not only accounted for his second-career three-point performance with a goal and two assists, he also notched his first-career game-winning goal and was a game-high +4. Doherty was also recognized as BC’s Male Eagle of the Week his exploits. Doherty is now Boston College’s leading scorer through the first two games this season (1-3-4).

POWER PLAY PLAUDITSSophomore Ian McCoshen not only score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame agaisnt RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights.

LAST LINE OF DEFENSEAfter getting drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in this summer’s NHL Entry Draft, Thatcher Demko returns as the mainstay in net for the Eagles. As a freshman, the San Diego, Calif., native turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. Not only did the 6-foot-4 goaltender go 9-1-1 in Hockey East last season, his 1.35 goals against average in conference action was also the lowest goals against average mark since Jimmy Howard’s (Maine) record of 1.15 in 2003-04. A member of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, Demko captured the 2014 Eberly Award (goaltender with

the best save percentage in the Beanpot) with a save rate of .966, marking the second-best save percentage in Beanpot Tournament history. Through two outings, Demko has a 1-1-0 mark with a 3.03 goals against a .880 save percentage.

SHERIFF SANTINISophomore Steve Santini captured a share of the program’s Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award after becoming a mainstay on the blue line. The Mahopac, N.Y., native led all defensemen with a +26 plus/minus rating and was also the club’s leader with 68 blocked shots. BCNumbersGameCoaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

NCAA Championships in the last 13years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Boston College has competed in five of the last nine national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).

Frozen Four appearances in the last 17 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (eight), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves(29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson(23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Last year’s trio of freshmen were the 22nd, 23rd and 24th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York, joining Jeff Farkas (1996, 1997, 1998), Marty Reasoner (1996, 1997), Blake Bellefuille (1997), Brian Gionta (1998, 1999), Mike Mottau (1998), Bobby Allen (1998), Brooks Orpik (2000), J.D. Former Eagles saw NHL action in 2013-14; the most of any program in college hockey. Wisconsin had the second most alums with 21 last season.

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 455 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (454) and North Dakota (447) trail by a slim margin.

Upon completion of the 2013-14 season, Boston College reclaimed the best overall winning percentage in Hockey East history. Over the course of 30 seasons in league play, the Eagles’ winning percentage of .628 (443-247-73) reigns supreme in one of college hockey’s top conferences.

Jerry York’s overall record is 964-578-102 in 42 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division I coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-11 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.
