Red Devils Take First Place

Burlington's League leading Red Devils. Front row L to R StuWoodward, Peter McCafferty, Jim Murphy, Phil Walsh, JayO'Neil,Jackie Flynn, Peter Vigneau, Dave Wheeler. Second row L to R HeadCoach Ed Cahoon, Assist Coach Bob Verrier, Steve Castraberti,

By Jay-Bee *

Burlington's Red Devils took agiant step toward another leagueChampionship last Saturday after-noon before almost 3,000 fans at theForum in Billerica as they camefrom behind in the second period todefeat Wilmington's Wildcats 4 to2. The victory gave the Red Devilsa two-point lead over the Wildcatswith both teams having two gamesremaining. B u r l i n g t o n hasMasconomet and Chelmsford left, while Wilmington will be facingNorth Reading and Tewksbury.Overconfidence will be the onlything that should stop the RedDevils from taking all the marbles.

The Red Devils played one of

Kim Ranger, Jim Whtffln, Steve Simpson, Bill Igo, Danny Yeadon,Rick Cesere, Paul D'Agostlno, Trainer BHI "DOC" Duncan, and Mgr.John Spcazaterrt.

their best games of the season, asthey put it all together. Their pass-ing was sharp for the most part, which resulted in the scores. Bothclubs skated hard and fast, and thechecking was crisp. The crowd wasthe biggest of the season, and theplayers had, trouble hearing thewhistle during most of the contest. The fans were emotionally attach-ed to the game, but held their"COOL" compared to last week.

The game also saw S teveSimpson moved up to the first line, and this move proved to pay-off forthe Red Devils as he scored twogoals and assisted on one, whileplaying on his off wing. AgainCoach Ed Cahoon has proven hismastery and pulled off the right i

move at the right time.Burlington jumped off to a fast

start as Steve Simpson scored afterjust 1:00 of the game with Co-Captain Jim Murphy assisting. Thelead was short lived however asJim Irwin tied the game at 3:18,while Steve Castroberti was in thepenalty box for charging. Mike-Esposito and Dave Irwin assistedon the goal. At 7:54 of the periodJim Irwin scored his second goal ofthe game, and for the first and onlytime, Wilmington took the lead. His shot from the right side wentoff goalie Phil Walsh's pad, hit thepost and went in. Assists went toSteve Neal and Dave Irwin. TheWildcats received a penalty at 9:46but the Red Devils couldn't score,

and the period ended 2 to 1 in fa.vorof Wilmington.
