Bossmen: Muddy Waters and Bill Monroe American Roots Music Symposium Berklee College of Music September 12–13, 2014 Muddy Waters and Bill Monroe are two American music titans who each helped create and define a blues-based genre: bluegrass, in the case of Bill Monroe, and Chicago blues, in the case of Muddy Waters. This symposium will celebrate their contributions to the music world and explore the musical, historical, and cultural contexts from which these musicians and genres emerged. Over the course of two days, attendees will enjoy scholarly presentations, lively panel discussions, experimental format sessions, and world-class performances. The idea for this symposium was inspired by James Rooney’s book, Bossmen: Bill Monroe and Muddy Waters. We look forward to Mr. Rooney’s participation in the event, and thank him for his contribution to the field.
