Bossmen: Muddy Watersand Bill MonroeAmerican Roots Music Symposium Berklee College of MusicSeptember 12–13, 2014

Muddy Waters and Bill Monroe are two American music titans who each helped create anddefine a blues-based genre: bluegrass, in the case of Bill Monroe, and Chicago blues, in thecase of Muddy Waters.

This symposium will celebrate their contributions to the music world and explore the musical,historical, and cultural contexts from which these musicians and genres emerged. Over thecourse of two days, attendees will enjoy scholarly presentations, lively panel discussions,experimental format sessions, and world-class performances.

The idea for this symposium was inspired by James Rooney’s book, Bossmen: Bill Monroe andMuddy Waters. We look forward to Mr. Rooney’s participation in the event, and thank him forhis contribution to the field.
