Modern vehicles are being equipped with more and more electronic components. As a conse-quence, there has also been an increase in the number of sensors installed in vehicles. These sensors act as the „sensory organs“ of a vehicle to record a wide range of different parameters. They can be used for an almost unlimited range of applications and the number of different areas where they are used in automobiles is constantly on the increase. The result is that nowadays there are hardly any vehicles at all on the road which are not equipped with sensors.

Lambda Sensors: Reliability and Expertise from the Inventor of the Lambda SensorLambda sensors measure the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gas. This measured value is essential for the operation of the closed-loop-controlled three-way cata-lytic converters (gasoline engines) and for monitoring lambda values (diesel engines). These sensors thus make a decisive contribution to ensuring low emissions values and good fuel economy. As the inventor of the lambda sensor, Bosch has the largest worldwide market coverage and is 1st choice on in the original-equipment market and the aftermarket.

Knock Sensors: For Controlled Combustion„Knocking“ can permanently damage an engine. Knock sensors fitted directly to the engine block record struc-ture-borne sound (knocking) in the engine and transfer this data to the engine-management system.

High Precision Even under Extreme Conditions

These values are then used to counteract the problem and ensure smoother combustion. This results in improved efficiency and longer service life.

Hot-Film Air-Mass Meters: Optimal Performance and Low Levels of Harmful emissionsHot-film air-mass meters measure the actual air flow in the engine very quickly and precisely so that the speci-fied air/fuel ratio can be maintained. This ensures opti-mal engine combustion, with the twin benefits of low levels of harmful emissions combined with greater efficiency.

Pressure Sensors: Reliability Combined with Extremely Fast Response Times

Micromechanical pressure sensors are predominantly used to measure atmospheric pressure. They supply the engine-management system with reliable values to ensure that the engine runs with the appropriate air/fuel ratio. Bosch pressure sensors have extremely fast response times and operate very reliable and accurate.

Low-Pressure SensorsThese monitor oil pressure, fuel pressure, intake-mani-fold pressure and ambient pressure.

High-Pressure SensorsThese record the fuel pressure in the common-rail sys-tem’s fuel rail and in the high-pressure rail of the gaso-line direct-injection system.

Differential-Pressure SensorsThese sensors can be installed in the exhaust-gas system, for instance, or in the diesel particulate filter where they record the load condition of the filter and transfer the values to the engine-management system. They are there-fore essential for ensuring best-possible emission values and fuel efficiency.

Peripheral Pressure Sensors These sensors measure pressure increases in the vehicle doors, e.g. resulting from a side impact, and transfer these values to the airbag control unit.

Bosch Low-Pressure SensorsHigh measuring accuracy with fast response times.

Bosch High-Pressure SensorsCompact, robust, vibration-resistant – with outstanding measuring accuracy throughout their entire service life.

Hot-Film Air-Mass MeterQuick and precise measurement of the actual air flow for a reliable and accurate mixture formation.

Bosch Knock Sensors The engine’s „ear“ ensures long service life and optimal operation.

Rotation-Speed and Temperature Sensors Multi-Talents for Extra Safety and Driving Comfort

Overview of Other sensors

Steering-Angle Sensors: Intelligent Vehicle SteeringSteering-angle sensors are fitted to the steering column or steering box for non-contact measurement of the steering angle. They support such features as the new active steering systems or the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®).

Pedal-Travel Sensors: for Trouble-Free AccelerationPedal-travel sensors directly monitor driver actuation of the accelerator pedal and transfer this information to the electronic control unit which combines it with additional data to operate the throttle valve accordingly. The sensor is integrated into the pedal module.

Torque Sensors: Essential for Accurate and Reliable Power SteeringTorque sensors for steering systems perform non- contact measurement of torque and thus record the position and movement of the steering wheel. This data is then transferred to the electric and electrohydraulic power-steering systems where it is processed to ensure reliable steering at all times.

Yaw-Rate Sensors: Extreme Precision in Extreme SituationsYaw-rate sensors record the vehicle’s yawing movements about its longitudinal or vertical axis. The values supplied by the sensors are used to support the safety systems for occupant protection and the navigation systems. Special yaw-rate sensors for the Electronic Stability Program very accurately record the yawing movements of a vehicle about its vertical axis and supply the data to the ESP®.

Acceleration Sensors: Immediate Reaction when Danger StrikesAcceleration sensors record the acceleration values of a frontal or side impact. They support the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and the Antilock Braking System ABS, or supply values which are used, for example, to trigger the belt tensioners, airbags or anti-roll bar.

Rain Sensors: Maximum Safety, Utmost ComfortRain sensors detect drops of water on the windshield and automatically activate the windshield wipers. Rain sensors react within fractions of a second, e.g. if water splashes onto the windshield during overtaking, and automatically set the system to the appropriate speed.

Climate-Control Sensors: Always Fresh Air Inside the VehicleIf the air-conditioning system is operating in recircu-lated-air mode the vehicle occupants use up all the oxygen inside the vehicle with the result that they get tired and inattentive, and develop headaches. Climate-control sensors measure the CO2 concentration of the air inside the vehicle and automatically admit fresh air if certain limits are dropped below.

Temperature Sensors: Extreme Accuracy under Extreme ConditionsTemperature sensors monitor the temperature of cool-ant, oil and air and transfer the data to the engine-man-agement system. Depending on the application, the sensors may be installed on the engine block, cooling circuit or intake-air system.

Bosch rotation-speed sensors are used to record an extremely wide variety of measurement data. The infor-mation they supply is used by transmission, engine, navigation and running-gear control systems. Crankshaft SensorsFor non-contact measurement of crankshaft rotation angle and speed.

Camshaft Sensors (Phase Sensors)For non-contact measurement of camshaft rotation angle. They are fitted directly to the camshaft.

Gearbox-Speed SensorsGearbox-speed sensors are integrated in the transmis-sion control module or installed as stand-alone sensors. They perform non-contact measurement of the input and output speeds of automatic transmissions, automated shift transmissions and continuously variable automatic transmissions. Wheel-Speed SensorsThey perform non-contact measurement of the wheel speed. The wheel-speed information is used, for instance, by the Antilock Braking System (ABS), as well as navigation and chassis control systems.
