In Camberwell, doctors, lawyers and schoolteachers blend strong family values and respect for past generations with a passion for a refined way of life. They appreciate manicured gardens, market-fresh produce and literary festivals, and convene at tasteful restaurants and impromptu dinner parties when they need to unwind.
FLASHBACK
1853 A generous land sale drew English settlers and merchants to hilly Prospect Hill. The asking price for an acre of land? A wallet-friendly 40 pounds. 1920 A temperance movement, lead by puritans and suffragettes, sparked the closure of the precinct’s wine saloons and hotels. The biggest casualty was the Camberwell Inn—the notorious drinkery was replaced by a milk bar. 1976 The Rotary Club Of Balwyn staged the first-ever trash and treasure market in the Camberwell Junction car park. It’s since defied the odds to raise $10 million for charities in Australia and overseas.
