BORDER LEICESTER www.borderleicesters.co.uk October 2012 SALES ROUNDUP The sales season has been a lile disappoinng this year. The weather has certainly not helped and many breeds are of the same opinion this year. Overall sales averages have been lower and the comment coming back from buyers has been that the quality has not been as good as previous years. The commercial buyers are looking for more powerful rams than a lot of vendors have been able to provide this year. Females, although again down on last year, are sll achieving a good trade as demand sll falls short of supply. At Kelso Ram Sales, entries were up on last year, and top price was again £1,800 for Sandy Watsons shearling sired by Alcane Atom out of an Eildon Eager ewe. (purchased by Iso- bel Duncan, Knowehead). Neil Howie (Lyham) made £1,400 for his Deuchrie Jewel sired shearling, selling to JC & JS Helm, Haltree. Lanark saw 106 Rams sold compared to 111 the previous year. There were 2 contenders for the top price of £2,600. Tom Tennants Champion, sired by Didcot Dylan Thomas, made £800 and his twin brother made £1,100, selling to Millmoor. The 4th and final four figure sum went to David Walker ( Alcane) for his Knockglass Cruiser ram, selling for £1,000 to RJ & SE Whitcombe. Sale average at Lanark was £309 compared to £358 last year. Ballymena had a good trade with top price of £735 for Sam Agnews (Ballynarry) ram lamb, and £756 for David Mawhinneys (Rockvilla) shearling. Trade at Aberdeen was also up on last year, averaging £246 compared to £216 previous year. Here, Jimmy Douglas (Clola) topped the sale at 1,700gns with EDITORIAL Welcome to our autumn newsletter. Its been a somewhat challenging time since our last newsletter. The great British weather has left us all behind with field work, short of good quality forage and any shows we did manage to attend were waterlogged. Nevertheless, many of you have braved the elements and continued to provide a fantastic show of Border Leicesters at both local and national shows and events. As mentioned in the July newsletter, Jim Brown (Eildon) took the championship at the Royal Highland Show with his 2 shear ram Bosolo Ghali. Congratulations to Olwen Hughes Owen (Cynefin) who won the Championship at the Royal Welsh with her 2 shear ram Ditton Allright.. And at the Scottish National Show in Perth (where the sun actually shone), David Walker (Alticane) won the Championship with his shearling ram, sired by Knockglass Cruiser out of a Ditton Desperate Dan ewe. This shearling went on to sell at Kelso for £1100. Congratulations also to President Tom Tennant for winning the Championship at Lanark with his Didcot Dylan Thomas ram lamb , which went on to sell for £800. Nick & Katie Summerfield also did well at Builth, winning the championship with their Millmoor Mortimer shearling, going on to sell for 560 gns. RD & JM Phillips (Broomsgrove) also did well, achieving top (£756) and second top (£714) prices at Welshpool with their Mosside Mothers Pride Shearlings. The website continues to grow. I have been trying to keep it updated with show and sales reports as well as a gallery of photographs of events through the year. SALES SUMMARY

Border Leicesters head to Germany!

A consignment of rams and females is bound for

Germany in November following three new export

orders. The rams from the Whitcombes Frensham

flock are going to Eckart Kobbermann, a vet from

Northern Germany who bought 2 Frensham rams three years ago,

to cross on the native White Heather sheep. They have done so

well that he has placed this new order, and he now plans to es-

tablish a pure Border Leicester flock.

The females include gimmers and ewe lambs. Four in-lamb gim-

mers are going to establish another new flock - and are from the

Didcot and Millmoor flocks. Another buyer is having the ewe

lambs which are coming from the Broomsgrove flock.

Robert Whitcombe, who has coordinated the order, with the help

of exporter Mike Adams is going to the Eurotier exhibition in Han-

over in November, where the rams will be exhibited on the British

stand. Thanks to a great deal of help from Mike Adams, the Socie-

ty is putting on an exhibit at this show - which is the largest live-

stock show in Europe and attracts visitors from all over the world.

Border Leicesters have been exported to France, Switzerland, the

Netherlands and Germany in recent years and the Society is keen

to encourage new markets and outlets for our sheep, whether at

home or overseas.
