REFLECTION

What did it mean for Jesus to come up out of the waters of the Jordan to experience the special presence of the Holy Spirit as though it were a dove, gently hovering over him? As a Jew, he would have been reminded both of the Divine Wind hovering over the void-become-creation, and of the dove bearing an olive twig as God restored humanity’s life on earth after the Flood. The Holy Spirit was empowering Him for a re-creative role on behalf of humanity.

His second experience was to sense God’s delight and joy sounding, rever-berating through every fibre of his body, every reach of his soul: ‘You are my beloved Son, my favour rests on you.’

Any baby, any adolescent, any adult who is baptised shares in these wonder-ful experiences. The dynamic power of the Holy Spirit hovers over the per-son as a gentle presence, preparing the one baptised for a mission on behalf of humanity. And every baptised person senses, below the range of hearing, the echo of the same marvellous words: “You are my beloved son or daugh-ter, my favour rests on you.”

Is it any wonder that Our Lord adopted this water rite to incorporate his fol-lowers into such wonderful experiences as a power-full impetus to fulfil their mission to cooperate in God’s saving plan for humanity?

We could take a moment to pray in gratitude for the parent/s or other per-son/s who brought us into this tradition stretching over almost two millen-nia. May they be filled with all that flows from their being beloved sons and daughters of God. © Fr Michael Tate

“John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is com-ing...he will baptize you with the Holy Spir-it…’” (LUKE 3:16) The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus - the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God. Baptism of the Lord - C A VOCATION VIEW: The literal meaning of the word Vocation is a “call”. The Universal call to holiness is rooted in our bap-tism. Today we remember our own baptism, and our call to love and serve the Lord through a specific vocation God calls us to. Priest, Religious, Consecrated Single or Married. Where are you going?

BAPTISM - This weekend we welcome into the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Baptism William Ridgewell.

Time for a Smile -

“What does the word ‘contemplate’ mean?” the college student asked his English professor. “Think about it,” the professor answered. “Ugh!” the student groaned. “Can’t you just tell me?”

Q: You’re riding a horse at full speed. You’re being chased by a lion and there’s a giraffe in the way in front of you. How will you escape this highly dangerous situation? A: Get off the carousel.

A little boy was sitting beside me in the hospital waiting room. He looked at all the rings on my fingers, then ex-claimed, “You must have had a lot of husbands!”
