Camera/Sound Boot Camp:

Day 2Day 2Day 2

Agenda

• Housekeeping

• Insurance Questions?

• Review Week 1

• Depth of Field

• Color Temperature

• Camera “Field Practice”

How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time.

After this lab, you will be able to

•List three things that affect depth of field

•Identify different color temperatures

•Understand perspective distortion

•Adjust the shutter, f-stop, and focus on the EX1

•Set the white balance on the EX1

•Use zebras to prevent overexposure

•Use peaking to assist focus

Exposure

Amount of light that a given medium requires for image reproduction

Three determinants of exposure

•F-Stops

•Shutter speed

•Sensitivity

Shutter Speed

Aperature = how much light is allowed to strike the sensor

Shutter speed = how long the light is allowed to strike the sensor

Three elements of Depth of Field

•Aperture

•Camera/subject distance

•Focal length

Color Temperature

Color temperature is measured in Kelvins (k)

Color Temperature BasicsIndoor lighting is 3200

Outdoor lighting is 5600

Warm versus Cold

White balance is a camera setting that adjusts for lighting in order to make white objects appear white.

1/48 Technical explanation: “With a traditional shutter angle of 180°, film is exposed

for 1/48 second at 24 frame per second.”

Simple: Looks better (more like film = more cinematic)

White Balance

You have three options –PRST: Preset mode (a factory setting of 3200K)A: Memory A mode

B: ATW or Memory B mode

To store a temperature:1.Point the camera at a white object that is matte (non-reflective) and covers 80% of the frame.

2. Once you have selected your white matte object, turn the white balance switch to “A”

3. Press the white balance button.
