My dear fellow students,

This week you’ll have the honour of reading this Little Casket in English, especially for the coming International Week. During this week, we’ll try to bring international and Belgian students closer together, all in light of the spirit of European unity. Within this leaflet, you’ll find all the activities we’re hosting to celebrate this International Week.

Furthermore, we also host our annually Friends & Family Cantus on friday the 13th. One of the most wonderful canti of the year. Enjoy a freshly tapped pint together with your father, sing a sexist version about someone’s mom or/and sister and marvel at the sight of someone’s grandfather drinking other people “under the table”.

Enough saliva’ed, now we can really see where I shine the most in out, namely pressing me out in English. I’m in my nipples about all the wonderful activities that are coming on. I hope to see you all there, but don’t worry we will keep you on the height about everything.

Our Bakske-team asked us to write a little text in English in the framework of the international week. Lucas already layed out why this is important, so I will spare you of a second explanation. I could tell you how awesome Erasmus is, but when the little point comes to the little pole, I have no leg to stand on. Namely, I’ve never been on Erasmus. That’s because I’m to stitched to our pretty Leuven! Parties shoot like mushrooms out of the ground! You can tick beers on the head for an apple and and egg! The historical centre is eyeblinding beautiful! Why would I ever want to go away from here? And of course, I would miss my mamaake to much... But let everything I sai

Het semester zit er bijna op, dus even een herinnering aan de komende deadlines:

- Vanaf 15 november zal het niet meer mogelijk zijn om handboeken te reserveren.

- Vanaf 22 november zal het niet meer mogelijk zijn om cursussen te reserveren.

- Op 3 december houden wij voor de laatste keer een gewone opening.

- De week erna zullen wij nog een keer open zijn, maar dan volgens het principe “first come, first served”.

Alsook willen we mededelen dat je reservaties vanaf deze week nog maar 1 WEEK blijven gelden, in plaats van 2 weken. Dus heb je een boek/cursus/iets anders toegewezen gekregen, laat deze dan niet wachten op zijn nieuwe baasje!

REMINDER:

As of Sunday November 15, it will no longer be possible to order textbooks. From this week on all assignments will expire after just 1 WEEK!

Other deadlines:

- As of November 22 no reservations of course materials will be possible.

- On December 3 we will have our last opening.

- The week after it will be “first come, first served”.

International week

During the International Week we focus even more on everyone’s journey to “Discover the World”. To help you with your quest, we organise a lot of different activities and info-sessions to get you excited and informed about all the possibilities, offered by our beloved Faculty, to study abroad.

On Monday 9th of November, we organise a Movie-night to get you all in the right mindset. We will provide you with both a short film and a main movie.

On Tuesday 10th of November, we will offer you delicious and authentic Spanish Tortilla!

Our traditional International Quiz will be held on Wednesday 11th of November. Get your best friends to join you and find out whether you are the most worldly-wise or most world-disconnected team!

Do you want to go an Athens course for a week? Or on an exchange program that sends you to a place in or out of Europe? Want to partake in an internship or work on your Master’s Thesis somewhere else? The possibilities are there! Join our info-sessions on Thursday 12th of November to find out more. The info-sessions for the Faculty of Engineering Science will start at 6pm with a general presentation in 200K 00.06.

A proper ending of the International Week can only happen with a party: The Passport to Paradise Party! Get your own ‘Passport to Paradise’ and explore the wonders that our world has to offer! Place to be is at the Albatros on Thursday 12th of November.

YERA presents “Dieselgate Explained”

On Friday, September 18th, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced that Volkswagen has been tampering with its diesel engines, in order to meet the emission standards. Since then the scandal has become a widely discussed, global issue with enormous financial consequences for the Volkswagen group, other European automobile companies and perhaps even the diesel engine!

In the light of these events YERA invites one of the best Belgian specialists, Mark Pecqueur, lecturer and researcher in car technology at Thomas More. He will of course not only talk about the diesel scandal, but also about the latest innovations and future prospects of both the engine and the electric motor!

YERA presents “Jill Talks Climate”

The climate conference of Paris is the 21th Conference of Parties (COP 21) organized by the UN. From November 30th until December 11th the world policy-makers gather in the French capital, hoping to reach a binding agreement to limit global warming. These conference also relies on the conclusions of the IPCC, the scientific committee of the United Nations.

2 weeks before the official start, YERA presents you a unique preview on the upcoming climate conference. The guest speaker is Jill Peeters, very well known for her weather forecasts on public television and her expertise on climate related topics. Jill will give a brief introduction on all of the items on the agenda of the upcoming conference and she will link this to the results provided by the IPCC. With her enormous experience, not only in terms of climatic topics, this think tank will certainly provide you the necessary insights on the climate change summit in Paris!

Nadat AB Inbev ons tijdens onze studentenperiode van heerlijke Stella heeft voorzien, hebben ze nu tijd vrij gemaakt om ons de volgende fase van ons leven in te helpen. Donderdag 12 november komen ze op onze tweede Careerevening spreken om te tips geven over het opstellen van

een CV en eventuele vragen hierover te beantwoorden. Natuurlijk is daarna nog een gelegenheid om wat na te praten bij een hapje en een drankje. Iedereen die interesse heeft is welkom op 12/11/’15 om 20 uur in VHI 02.29.

Revue

Revue. Who are they? What do they do? Why do they do it? Have you been wondering about these things as well? Especially for you, every week, we shed a bright light on one of our more or less known working groups. This week we take a closer look at Revue-sport. Revue-sport is a working group you would not expect immediately. Their major pastime is playing Frisbee. But who the hell came up with the idea to throw a flat disc? In 1871, a person named William Russell Frisbie lived in Connecticut. He owned a bakery called “The Frisbie Pie Company”. He noticed a big amount of pie-tins (on which the pies were sold) weren’t brought back to the factory after World War 2. Some enthusiastic people had found out it was a pleasant activity to throw them to each other. Companies saw potential and started making similar discs in plastic so they didn’t bent anymore. And that’s the reason we still throw flat discs today. By the way, we participate in the frisbee-competition of VTK. Please thumbs up!

Kom op 9 november naar onze beginnersworkshop om dit version control system te leren kennen. Ben je geen beginner meer? Dan ben je op 24 november welkom voor het tweede deel, waar meer geavanceerde concepten aan bod komen.

Het is tijd om te testen hoeveel hersencellen de eerste weken van het academiejaar overleefd hebben. Dit kan tijdens de Bloedserieusquiz!

Op maandag 23 november zijn jullie allemaal (van burgi’s tot managers, van pedagogen tot advocaten en alles wat daar tussen of buiten ligt) welkom in Alma 3. Jullie worden hier vanaf 20u30 verwacht, de eerste vraag zal gesteld worden om 21u. Meedoen kan je voor een luttele 10 euro per groep (te betalen op de quiz zelf). Iedere groep mag bestaan uit maximum 5 personen.

Ursus Titsaris

Last week, we published an article about our mission regarding the Ursus Titsaris. We had hoped our readers would be able to help us by sharing useful information with us. Unfortunately, the Ursus Titsaris seems to be able to act very discretely, as we haven’t received any useful hints yet. We would like to repeat that any hint or possibly useful piece of information is highly appreciated and can be sent to titsbeer@vtk.be. IAESTE leuven

IAESTE Leuven is een organisatie die internationale stages organiseert voor studenten aan de KU Leuven.

“My internship in Poland was at the university and heavily research focused. It allowed me to put the theory I had been learning about in my classes into practice on a full scale research project. The internship allowed me to catch a first glimpse of how research is conducted at a university and partially convinced me to pursue a PhD. In addition, I am currently applying multiple techniques I learned about during my internship. Besides study and work related matters, I met many motivated students from all over Europe and forged life-long friendships. ~Niels Cautaerts”

Niels is ondertussen afgestudeerd en aan de slag bij SCK-CEN voor een Ph.D in nucleair onderzoek. Deze internationale ervaring heeft voor hem alvast veel betekend en duidelijk gemaakt wat hij wou en niet wou. Het heeft ongetwijfeld meegeholpen aan zijn verdere carrierekeuze.

Heb jij ook interesse in zo’n stage? Research gericht aan een onderzoeksinstelling of eerder hands-on bij een bedrijf?
