localrestaurants,savinghundredsofdollarsandcarbonemissions.“Peoplebehindussaythevansmellslikebarbecue,buttome,it’snotanobviousdifference,”Whittakersaid.Thepairhopetosetaworldrecord

forthelongestjourneybycarusingalternativefuel,withagoalofcovering45000kilometresinaboutsixmonths.ThetitlecurrentlybelongstofourGermans,whodrove38137kilometresonnaturalgastwoyearsago.

GrowinguparoundGeorgianBayinspiredJerry’srespectfornature.Heworkedasatreeplanterwhilestudyingenvironmentalmanagement.Whittakergrewupcampingintheprairies.Shefinishedherdegreeinanthropologyandenvironmentalstudiesayearago.Thepairmetlastsummerandrealizedtheysharedgoalsforsustainableliving.“We’renotlookingtobecomefamous,”

Jerrysaid.“Wewanttoconveytheideathatpeople

haveachoice.Wehavethisincredibletechnology[forthecar],butreally,changehastocomefrompeople’smentalities,”WhittakersaidaftermeetingwiththestudentecologicalclubatanOntariohighschool.
