The Four Times works within the gulf between documentary and fiction, and can be understood in three different ways. It can be seen as a science fiction film without special effects, or as an ethnographic documentary on some parts of the Calabrian Appennine, or as an essay about the human soul.

-Michael Gubbins:

Michael Gubbins is a journalist and consultant, specialising in digital change in the film and the wider media. He was formerly editor of Screen International and has written for newspapers and magazines, including The Times and Time Out. He has also made frequent appearances on television, including the BBC's flagship film programme, ABC News and Channel Four.Gubbins has spoken at more than 50 festivals and events, including Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam and Hong Kong and has chaired major events including debates at Europa Cinemas, the European Film Market and the European Parliament.He is on a member of advisory board of Power To The Pixel and BAFTA Learning And Events and a director of the Screenwriters Festival.He has acted as a consultant or written reports for bodies including the UK Film Council, the Swedish Film Institute and CineRegio.

-Antonio Medici (Bim Distribuzione, Italy):

He is the General Director of Bim Distribuzione and of Q-Media, a video distribution company. After graduating in Political Sciences and in Cinema Management (EAVE, ANICA Master), he started working at the International Movie Company (distribution company) as a buyer. He is currently Europa Distribution’s vice president. Bim Distribuzione: For over 25 years BIM Distribuzione has been the major distributor of European and international independent films in Italy. We have also co-produced with well respected directors such as Ken Loach, Michael Haneke and Francis Ford Coppola. -Fionnuala Jamison (Coproduction Office, France):

Coproduction Office started as a sales and production label in 1987.After launching the sales division of Coproduction Office one year later, the company acquired world distribution rights for films by Lars von Trier, Nanni Moretti, Aki and Mika Kaurismäki, and Wolfgang Becker.The company’s first project, "Europa" by Lars von Trier, won the Cannes Jury Prize 1991. After "The Kingdom" and "Breaking the Waves" , Philippe worked as a producer (or co-producer) with Carlos Reygadas, Roy Andersson, Jessica Hausner, Kornél Mundruczó and Ulrich Seidl. Coproduction Office’s slate also includes international sales for films by, among others, Takashi Miike, Cristi Puiu and Corneliu Porumboiu. The company is the smallest of the established sales and production companies, and a home for radical arthouse films, where talent is nurtured."The Man Who Hides The Forest" is the company’s first production with a French filmmaker

-Régine Vial (Les Films du Losange, France):

She started as a French teacher and running the theatre Le France in Saint Etienne. She also directed two movies for children in 16mm.From 1983 to 1986, she worked for Gaumont as manager of the school division.Since 1986, she is responsible of the distribution for the Films du Losange.She participated to several commissions for the CNC: selective help for distribution, selective production support, help to the cinematographies with small diffusion, help to the classification of art-house theatres.Since 2006, she is also vice president of Europa Distribution with Antonio Medici.

-Laure Vaysse (Bankside Films, UK):

Laure Vaysse joined Bankside Films in August 2008 to work on sales and financing structures. Bankside is the international sales company co-founded by Phil Hunt, Hilary Davis, Stephen Kelliher, Greg Cruttwell and Compton Ross in January 2007.Prior to Bankside Films Laure graduated from Cass Business School in London with an MSc in Film Business and from the EDHEC Business School in Lille, France with a masters in Management. Between 2005-2006 she spent a year working in Paris on finance and marketing for film releases at TF1 and Studiocanal.

-Peter Jager (Autlookfilms, Austria):

Born in 1968 in Belgium, Peter studied law and philosophy. As a young filmfreak, Peter helped to create a new filmmagazine with fellow students and became ‘Commercial and Marketing Director’. Following his passion for film Peter became ʻMarketing and Acquisitions Consultantʼ for several major independent filmdistributors and filmexhibitors. In 2005, together with Austrian production companies, Peter founded and became ‘Managing Director’ of Autlook Filmsales. Docs like ‘Our Daily Bread’ and ‘Blind Loves` were sold worldwide to theatrical distributors.

-Licia Eminenti (Eurimages):

Licia Eminenti is graduated in Litterature at Florence University. She has always been close to the music and theatre world organising and getting involved in many cultural events both in Italy and France (Arezzo Wave, Cinewave, Semaine Dada, Archaos circus) and following different theatre companies (Bottega teatrale dell'attore, Magazzini Crimin-ali, Giovanna Marini).

She worked as administrator for the cinematografic European coproduction Funds, Eurim-ages, and she was in charge of the international sales for Gemini Films.

She has been expert/reader for Arte France Cinema and she continues her collaboration with the Eurimages Funds as expert, as well with Media Program. She’s one of the mem-ber who founded the BLAC (Collectif for the cultural action for cinema and audiovisual), teaches "image" in several workshops (mainly colleges but also out school time). She oc-casionally collaborates to the cinema review "Cahiers du cinema".

INTIMISTO (23'30'') selected in many Festivals in the world and in competition to La Bien-nale di Venezia 2001, receveid many Prices, among others The Critic price Novaïs-Texeira 2001, The Price for the best first short film Lille 2002, The Public Price Strasbourg-Mainz 2002… LA PETITE FILLE (19’) it's her second short was presented in the "Semaine de la cri-tique", (Cannes Films Festival 2003). FRATERNITAS (17'30’’) in 2007, has been shown at Brest europeen short Film Festival, and in the Panorama HD, section Research and Innova-tion. She's prepearing the documentary "The Female Domination" and finalising the script of her first long feature film.

-Pascal Guerrin (Back up, France):

Pascal Guerrin joined in 2006 Backup Films, a Paris-based Film Financing Agency. ESSEC Business School graduate, Pascal is head of co-productions for Backup Films.

Entirely dedicated to film financing, Backup Films has accompanied, in 2009, over 60 am-bitious international projects in their search of financing, whether in their development, production, or distribution phase. Backup Films is currently managing film investments funds of over €33.6M, and has brokered, last year, €4.5M of co-production, distribution and equity deals. Over the past 8 years, the films financed through the Backup Films Agency or Backup Films’ funds have gathered 49 A-class festival selections and have won 18 major prizes.

-Alexandra Lebret (European Producers Club):

A graduate in Economics (pre-phd), marketing at ESSEC, France, and at Università di Bocconi, Italy, Alexandra Lebret has dedicated her career to the cinema industry.After working for 7 years on the international development of UGC multiplexes in France, Spain, and Italy, Alexandra cofounded the Parisian cultural weekly Zurban, and cofounded Liberafilms.com, one of the first VOD sites in France (in 2000). In 2002, she was named Secretary-General of the European Producers Club and assumed responsibility for all of the EPC's activities. She has brought renewed momentum to the association by developing international coproduction assistance and exploring new foreign markets. This has resulted in the creation of coproduction forums (42 to date), cooperation forums (outside Europe; 13 to date), conferences open to the public and the brand new European Cinema Network on the Internet

-Annemie Degryse (Lumière, Belgium):

Born in Belgium 04/03/1968 lived in France as a child and came back to Belgium in 1983. Studied Fine art in College and Studied Film – option animated film at the Royal Academy of Art Ghent and graduated in 1992. Started working on the film TAXANDRIA by Raoul Servais as a student and continued as studio & production assistant for Anitrick/PDG & Partners until 1994. From 1993 until 1997 directed the Raoul Servais foundation where different short animations – graduated and professional films – were produced. From 1998 to 2000 responsible at CARTOON - initiative of MEDIA Program of the European Community - for the pre-production support and organiser of the Cartoon Movie. Before returning to the production, from 2000 until 2003 General Manager of FLANDERS IMAGE (VAF)

-John M. Jacobsen (Filmkameratene, Norway):

Entered the industry in 1959. Has worked in exhibition, distribution and production. Has produced more than 20 films since 1983. Among his productions are: MAX MANUS (2008) – the biggest Norwegian box office hit in 30 years. PATHFINDER (1987) nominated for Academy Awards as Best Foreign Film ELIAS – THE LITTLE RESCUE BOAT (2005-2009) animated television series for children. Nominated for International Emmy. Made Commander of the order of St. Olav by the King of Norway for his work on behalf of Norwegian Film industry. Awarded an honorary AMANDA (Norway’s Oscar equivalent). Currently President of AGICOA in Geneve – rightholders organization for film and television producers.

Was Chairman of the Norwegian Film and Television Producer Association for 15 years.

-Raimond Goebel (Pandora Film, Germany):

In 1972, Karl BAUMGARTNER founded with Reinhard BRUNDIG the Harmonie collective, one of the best Art house theatres in Germany. In 1982 they established Pandora Film Distribution, one of the leading European distributors of International Art house films. Pandora Film soon undertook an increasing amount of the actual production work. With Emir Kusturica's Underground(Golden Palm / Cannes 1995), the transition to production was fulfilled. In the years following, its emphasis has been solely on international producing and co-producing for Cinema, with films by directors such as KIM Ki-Duk, CHEN Kaige, Aki KAURISMÄKI, KITANO Takeshi, Wim WENDERS, Ang LEE, Mira NAIR, Andrej TARKOWSKI, Lars VON TRIER, Wayne WANG and many more. In 2002, the Film Funding Institution honoured the company with title, Tiger in the field. Today Pandora Film presents itself as an Independent Production, Marketing and Distribution Company with the ambition of continuing to grow by means of quality rather than mass production. Up to eight films are realised per year. In 2008 Tulpan by S. DVORTSEVOY won Best Film/ Un Certain Regard; Teza by H. GERIMA Special Jury Price/Venice; 33 Szenes by M. SZUMOWSKA Silver Leopard and 2009 Gigante by A. BINIEZ the Silver Bear in Berlin. In 2003, Karl BAUMGARTNER established Pallas Film with Thanassis KARATHANOS. The same year, he received the Award by Kunst und Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Bremen for his achievements and contribution to the European Film Industry. At the Film Festival Locarno 2004, he was awarded the Raimondo Rezzonico Prize. He is also a member of the German, European and Asian Film academy.

Synopsis :

The Four Times works within the gulf between documentary and fiction, and can be understood in three different ways. It can be seen as a science fiction film without special effects, or as an ethnographic documentary on some parts of the Calabrian Appennine, or as an essay about the human soul. The four episodes tell the stories of four “leading characters”: an old shepherd in the last days of his life; the birth and first few weeks of a kid till its first pasturing under the olive trees; the life of an old chestnut tree in the course of the seasons; and the transformation of the old chestnut into charcoal through the work of the charcoal burners. All four episodes are set on the Ionian side of the Calabrian peninsula and are intertwined with one another in such a way as to make up one single story: the story of one soul that goes through four successive lives.

Useful Information

Going from the airport to the hotel : Of course, there will be no problem if you take a taxi, but some of you may prefer to take the train, as it will be as fast and much cheaper. Here is how it works:

­ From Orly Airport:Take the RER C from the station called “Pont de Rungis Aéroport d'Orly” in the direction of Pontoise. Then stop at Bibliothèque François Mitterand, then you can look on the maps below how to walk to the hotel. The train trip should last normally 20 minutes.

From Roissy Charles de Gaulle:Take the RER B from Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 1 in the direction of Robinson or Saint Rémy les Chevreuses. Then stop at Chatelet les Halles. Finally, take the Metro line 14 in direction of Olympiades and stop at Bercy.Then, you will be very close from the hotel on the rue de Bercy.
