INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION

A social networking site is a virtual community that allows people

all over the world to communicate with each other. These sites are

a great way to connect with your riends and amily, and share

your lie with the people you care about.

The nuts and bolts aren’t hard to work out, but the etiquette can be

a bit tricky – especially where your kids come into it. The Mum 2.0

program is here to help, with this quick guide to making sure you

never lose ace online.

For my Mum.

Better late than never.

ADDINGFRIENDS

Don’t  eel out o place –

there are more mums online

than ever.

To them, it’s like

including you in a

conversation with

their riends.

Family can be

riends, but the lines

blur when it comes

to your children.

Check with your

kids beore adding

their riends.

What exactly constitutes

a friend online? It’s not so

dierent to how you interact

with people in the real world.

I you wouldn’t stop to talk

to each other in the street, you aren’t riends.

Tip You’re bound to be popular – but try

not to go adding riends willy nilly.View the online tutorials at telstra.com/callmum

POSTINGPHOTOS Tagging a riend in a photo

will display it or all o their riends. What’s cute or unny

to you may not be the

same to your kids.

If in doubt, check

beore you tag them.

Once you’ve posted it,

anyone can get a copy.

Nothing is better than

sharing your memories with

the people who helped make

them. Sometimes though, the

memories you like to share

are ones other peoplewould rather orget.

Tip: Comments on your children’s

photos are best made oine.View the online tutorials at telstra.com/callmum

Making up your interests

online can be risky.

Your real-world riends

know the real-world you. If you eel out o

place, you probablylook out o place too.

It’s important to be

comortable with your

online sel.

JOININGGROUPS

Joining groups is a great way

to meet people that share

your passion. It may be easy

to project an altered image o

yoursel online, but reinvention

is best let to aging pop stars.

Tip: Go with what you like. I you’re into

cheesy romance novels and watching

every dance show on TV, embrace it.View the online tutorials at telstra.com/callmum

Treat applications (apps) as i they are being added to your home.

Many apps are unny,

entertaining and practical –

but not all.

Apps can distract riends who

have really come to talk to you.

Sometimes, they can make

your profle look really messy.

ADDINGAPPLICATIONS

Applications are a great way to interact

with your riends online. Just be sure you

don’t have too much o a good thing.

Tip: Watch out or people who add

items to their homes indiscriminately

– they’re called hoarders.

It’s okay to ignore

riend requests.

You can block people and

become invisible to them.

Give riends o riends and

acquaintances restricted access

to your profle.

Be careul about how much o your

personal inormation you display.

Tip: I you think they’ll get touchy,

accept their riend request and

then ‘de-riend’ them later – they

(probably) won’t even notice!

PRIVACY

Online, everyone has one

degree o separation, and

it’s the search button. So,

what i you don’t want to let

someone know everything

(or anything) about you?
