�� Hi Everyone,Our anniversary celebrations began with an Open Morning, and Bridges Centre was soon bustling as a large number of visitors chatted to members about the colourful displays on view. Membership forms ran out before 11am, and 17 people became new members! Please continue to tell your friends and neighbours that anyone who is retired or semi retired can join Monmouth U3A. We offer friendship, events and a wide variety of activities in return for a small membership fee, interest and enthusiasm�The highlight of the Open Morning was a country dancing demonstration led by Ken and Margaret Winter, both Founder Members. The audience was invited to join in and after a few minutes of being swirled around by Ken, I was completely out of breath and envious of his high levels of energy!A Summer Party with Pimms followed the Open Morning, and the Forest of Dean U3A Ukulele Band sang many nostalgic numbers from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. A beautiful 30th Anniversary Cake was sliced by Ken and Margaret and handed round to members, and the event ended with much chatting and laughter after everyone enjoyed refreshments, strawberries and cream.On a sad note, we learned of the death of Rex Biggs, a previous Chairman,Convenor, and the Creator/ Editor of the first two issues of this magazine; andJohn Davies (page 38). Both will be missed by many of us.Finally, thank you to our helpers and committee members – we are a great team. Do members realise many of our committee positions are limited to three years and every year we need to replace those who are retiring?Although we have 500 members, few come forward to be elected at an AGMor convene new activities: yet our current committee lead U3A groups; care for grandchildren; cope with health issues; hold consultative posts; travel from time to time and still squeeze a few hours each month to keep your MonmouthU3A running. ��

��A choir of children from Overmonnow Primary School sang carols at the Monmouth U3A Christmas Party held on the 19th December 2017. Their Choir Leader, Miss Gibbs, led the pupils through a short medley and the hit of the show that had to be repeated as an encore was, ‘We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.’ This was thoughtfully and very expertly accompanied by sign language, a real bonus and a delight to all those who were hard of hearing. The children aged seven to eleven years were to be congratulated on their synchronisation and memories!Following the entertainment, there was a feast set out by the committee and members who each brought a plate of party food to share. It gave everyone time to talk and to undertake a Christmas quiz that had some surprises, for example; few knew that the correct name for a male turkey is a ‘gobbler’ or ‘tom’, but one member hazarded an incorrect guess with ‘turcock’.At the end of the party a 'Pot' made by members earlier in the year, and fired and donated by Albright Pottery, was raffled.��

MEMORIESMonmouth U3A – The Early DaysA Personal Story by Ken Winter��

Before the Third Age Trust created a regional structure, the South Wales and Severnside U3As formed a network to support each other. One highlight of the year was the annual lecture and Monmouth hosted the event in 1995. Brigadier John Hooper was asked to be the speaker and he spoke on ‘Myths, Misunderstandings and Middle Eastern Madness’ – a topic that could be revisited today.Some fifty members, half the membership, were involved in organising and running the day. We used Monmouth Comprehensive School, andhired caterers to provide lunch then organised a series of events to entertain our guests in the morning. Over one hundred visitors attended and we subsequently received many complimentary messages.Other memories include a trip to Slimbridge to hear the dawn chorus and have breakfastoverlooking the Severn, and a visit to France in conjunction with Chepstow U3A to observe the eclipse of the sun.After six very enjoyable years I decided that it was time for someone else to take over. We changed the constitution to restrict the length of time that officers could serve and I retired into relative anonymity.

Memories of Monmouth U3A’s First Six Months continuedBy the end of 1988 the Society was well launched with membership increasing steadily and it was felt that it needed to be formalised with a Committee, properly run accounts etc. All agreed however that the atmosphere should remain informal, and above all friendly to new members. A steering committee of five members was formed. Hugh, who was never one to seek the limelight, indicated that he wished to take a back seat and so served as an ordinary committee member. He also undertook to supply The Beacon with regular reports, which he did in his own inimitable style. Thus began the hard-working succession of Committee members and office-holders that have steered Monmouth U3A from small beginnings to a membership of around 500 and to be one of the largest organisations in Monmouth. Sadly Hugh died in 1996 at the young age of 76. He was much mourned and will never be forgotten by those who knew him. We all owe him so much. ��

Although this is rather bureaucratic, one of the key requirements of this legislation is to demonstrate compliance. We hope you understand the need for these changes and contact a committee member with any questions. ��

My entry into Monmouth U3A was somewhat quicker than most. Having filled in the Membership form with interests as was then required, I put music first and as I perused the groups Iwas pleased to see a music group listed.Before I had the chance to call the convenor I had a phone call to ask if I would be prepared to run the group!! Isuspect the committee were just waiting for someone to list ‘music’ so they could pounce!After several chats with the then Convenor as to how the group wanted to proceed, I was launched into my first U3A group in 1999 and I still love it. I amforever learning new things and added a second Music Appreciation group almost two years ago.

Within a couple of years I was voted on to my first committee under Janet Payton where I took on the role of Resources Secretary, and it was during this time that we introduced Pastoral Care sending cards to members who were ill and visiting them when they were housebound or discharged from hospital. This was a job I continued for around10 years. I also started up the first Reading for Pleasure – which still continues, and I was at the first meeting of Eric Crawford’s The European History Group.I became Janet’s Vice Chairman and continued as Chairman from 2003 –2006. This began an extremely busy period and I was fortunate to have a very good committee and unending support from my other half, Tom! Since then I have been on further committees and was a Membership Secretary.In 2003 when I became Chairman my husband Tom and I set up Coffee Mornings at our home to enable new members to meet one another and learn about the background and the aims of the organisation they have joined. Subsequently over the years several hundred members have been through our front door and I still have welcome mornings.I think our U3A an amazing organisation and I have made many lasting friends of varying ages. It was my friends in U3A that helped me to carry on after the death of my husband and I will be forever grateful for that. I realise that the more you put into a group, the more you get out of it and I have learnt so much over the years. Long may our U3A keep going.

Organising an Open Morning for the public to see activities provided by U3A members, followed by an afternoon Summer Party with entertainment and food was a tall order for a committee of eight already very busy people. Add extremely hot weather, a local fete, Wimbledon finals AND the World Cup football with England playing for third place – and you begin to see the difficulties we faced. We ensured our U3A events were well publicised in Monmouth�and we were ready to roll! On the day, efficient fans and open patio doors ensured the two hundred plus who saw the displays were cool and relaxed; fete goers visited both events, and people either recorded the sport or were not interested.

The colourful French Intermediate display with cheeses and wines attracted a lot of attention from visitors at the Open Morning. The group in Monmouth thrives on information provided by its members, under the supervision of a native French speaker tutor. During the growing season, such subjects as gardening and culinary interests (particularly vegetables) come to the forefront of their discussions. In addition the group’s motorcar enthusiast has provided a further element to our topics of conversation. NB. At the Open Morning, many people expressed interest in joining a French group. �� Convenor Norma Williams

�� The Music Appreciation group provides enjoyment and opportunity to share the love of music. We are constantly stimulated by Norma’s absorbing and intriguing programme that recently included film music by Serge Prokofiev from ‘Alexander Nevsky’. This was later turned into the Cantata Op. 78 as used during concerts that we found very enjoyable. ��

Our sessions are always fascinating. We are often introduced to unfamiliar music but even well known pieces are given extra interest thanks to Norma’s well-prepared notes. ��

Music Appreciation gives the opportunity to listen to music you may never have heard of or perhaps did not like on first hearing it years ago. Norma is very knowledgeable and gives great insight into the composers, their lives and the music they have composed, whether it is Handel, Rachmaninov, Chopin, Tchaikovsky or the Christmas music of Aaron Copeland. ��

I feel a better and bigger person after each session. ��

Since I joined the Music group last autumn I have listened to some composers whose works I didn’t know, and to others of whom I knew little. I have to admit to not knowing before that a concerto is structured in a regular way! It is relevant to learn details of a composer’s life (and often early death), and Norma’s selection of the main themes both played beforehand and written down for us really helps to follow the musical composition. I also find it helpful that Norma’s notes indicate the instruments to listen out for. ��

One of the many aspects I enjoy is the short but comprehensive biography about the composer. It gives an insight into why and for whom they have composed a piece of music and also about their lives. ��

��Pictures falling off walls, doors getting stuck, a dog represented by a lead, collapsing mantelpieces – this play had it all. The fun started even before the curtain went up with the ‘theatre manager’ asking the audience if anybody had a dog that the cast could borrow. The premise of the play is that the amateur dramatic company from Cornley Polytechnic is about to stage a 1920s thriller called Murder at Haversham Manor. For once the company have enough cast members to fill all the roles and money to build a ‘decent’ set, but everything that can go wrong does go wrong. It is the good timing of the talented cast (members of the Mischief Theatre Company) that makes sure the humour, which is based on mishaps and mayhem, does not wear thin. The pace of the show is relentless and the energy of the cast is tremendous, with them all working together with perfect timing enabling this farce to be successful. The set design is ingenious and brings the play to a literally crashing hilarious end. The play is not to everyone’s taste but this critic and others around her found it very, very funny and it was an enjoyable afternoon out for Monmouth U3A. ��

��At 4 o’clock on Saturday February 10th, a small coachload of U3A members winged its way to Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust, on the southern side of the Severn Estuary. We were to see the famous Bewick swans being fed under floodlights and after this, to be served a delicious meal in the restaurant. We were a little early and sat in the Penguin Observatory, chatting and using our cameras until swan feeding time at 6.30pm.We were looking out onto a watery paradise of quacking, squawking, gobbling swans, geese and ducks. It was like watching a flowing motorway with the long necked white swans, surrounded gracefully by smaller but equally lovely birds.Our guide talked of the habits and breeding patterns of the birds, including the fact that some pairs have wintered here for twenty-nine years.Leaving us, he went out to take his food-laden wheelbarrow around the water. The birds got very excited, making even more noise. Floodlights shone downhighlighting the gleaming colours of the feathers. After this visual feast we enjoyed our two-course meal, beautifully cooked and served. I returned home to plan a daytime visit as soon as spring arrives.Many thanks to Diana for organising this trip. ��

The Geology Group display consisted of a number of rocks and fossils found locally in Monmouthshire and the Forest of Dean. There was also a selection of photographs showing some of the outdoor activities the group has done over the two years of its existence. The local rocks included the Old Red Sandstone which can be seen in abundance as a building stone in Monmouth, as well as examples of quartz conglomerate and shelly limestone. The Old Bridge in Monmouth and the wall by St Mary’s churchyard have examples of all these rocks. Three types of gypsum were shown, the fairly common pink alabaster found on the coast near Penarth, some desert rose, a rather beautiful three-dimensional specimen, and selenite, an almost clear crystal wand. An interesting piece of Pennant Sandstone with organic inclusions hinted at the origins of the Welsh coalfields.Activities high-lighted included a interesting trip to go behind the scenes at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, a walk around Hereford to see building stones and another around Hereford Cathedral where a surprising range of rock types can be found on tombs and monuments. The group has also been to Soudley Valley in the Forest of Dean where a former railway line associated with mining allows a section through geological time to be observed, including the angle at which the strata have been moved by tectonic action.Nearer home a walk around the area of Little Doward had us all speculating on how the local geology had been modified by rivers and flash-floods and sea level changes over its long past.For details of speakers and field trips: ��Geology meet at Bridges Centre on 2nd Wednesday of the month 2 - 3.30pm.

Creative Photography continuedThe core purpose of the group is to learn and improve our photography and editing skills in a supporting environment, whilst having fun. The open day showed that there are lots of people who are interested in joining a photography group. At the moment the creative photography group is already full. However, there is plenty of scope for another photography group to be started. It’s actually not that difficult to start and run a photography group (honest). �� Convenor Valerie Conniff Val is the Convenor of the Science and Technology Group and a previous Chair of Monmouth U3A. Val brought lots of interesting information about past visits of scientific interest and Guy loaned his microscope with some fascinatingspecimens he had prepared. The selection included examples of:

� biological specimens - starfish, tortoiseshell butterfly, lichen� chemical samples - salt crystals, vitamin C� geological examples - oolite limestone, volcanic ash

A visitor is shown looking at some of them through a microscope.Tom Williams started Science and Technology in October 2003 and from small beginnings, with an initial membership of 10, it has grown to be a very popular group. Average attendance this year has been 39, ranging from 21 to 50! Valtook over from Tom as Convenor of the group in March 2006 and, as the group numbers grew, she found it increasingly difficult to come up with new ideas. A few years ago volunteers from the group were invited to form a small ‘Think Tank’ and there are now four of them including Val sharing the responsibility of devising a programme and recording the meetings. This pooling of expertise and ideas makes for a more varied programme and eases the burden, and Val says she is exceedingly grateful for their help.Visits also play an important part in the Science programme and at least one visit a year is arranged to places of scientific or technological interest. Some highlights are visits to the Malvern Car Factory in 2007, Concorde in Filton in 2008, the RAF Museum Cosford in 2013, Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station in 2014 and the Royal Mint in 2016. Science takes advantage of scientific events held within travelling distance. �

Cardiff University regularly mails details of their public lecture programme andwe attended a U3A Study Day in Dr. Jenner’s house in Berkeley in 2015, one of the rare occasions when Study Days were within reach.“Science meets on the second Tuesday afternoon of every month, apart from August, at Mitchel Troy Village Hall for a presentation by a guest speaker or one of the members. We are fortunate to have had new members joining who have made interesting and valuable contributions to our programme. There is no restriction on membership of the group; the only requirement is an enquiring mind and an interest in the developments taking place in science and technology. New members are very welcome to join for a ‘taster’ session and you will find us a very friendly and welcoming group”. Valerie Conniff

Exploring Local Churches Convenor Frances Williams�Churches dedicated to Celtic saints are everywhere in our border counties area. This year we have already visited St. Tysilio in the tiny hamlet of Sellack which has a historical east window with glass dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, probably taken from other churches. It shows, among other things initials possibly for Richard Scudamore in 1630 as well as what may be St. Catherine with the Wheel. St Illtyd’s Church Mamhilad,

Pontypool is another small Church dedicated to a Celtic saint that dates from the Middle Ages and has a yew that is said to be over 2,000 years old. In contrast, our next visit will be to Hoarwithy, apretty village on the borders of the Wye. St Catherine’s is a most unusual Anglican church decorated at great expense by the 19th century incumbent who wished to ‘beautify’ the building. The result is an Italianate church in a style more usually found in Sicily! Further contrast will come when we visit Brockhampton,an exquisite Arts and Crafts church, with original William Morris altar cloths.The ‘breeze of history imprinting itself’ indeed! Frances

There was a lot of interest in the display by Rockfield Reading at the Open Morning. Meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 2pm inmember’s homes in Monmouth. “If anyone is interested in joining a very vibrant group full of interesting people and books, come along and try us out for a month.” ��

Inauguration of John Davies’ BenchI was very pleased to be at the Bridges Centre for the unveiling of the lovely bench from donations in memory of John Davies, and to have the opportunity of meeting his daughter Sue Powell. I knew John from the walking group -striding in front with his shepherd's crook while the rest of his group followed. He was a man of many interests and I enjoyed his sense of humour. Another vivid memory was his contribution of food to the walking group parties. He was an innovative cook and produced delicious dishes, andwalkers made a beeline for them. John and I had my damson tree in common.He loved to make damson preserves and in particular pickled damsons, and Iprovided him with the damsons while he would give me a few jars of what he had made. I still have his recipes for damson chutney and pickled damsons, and on the ones I now make, I add ‘John's Recipe'. In Case of Emergency (ICE) CardOur members are given an ICE Card to complete with details of the person to inform in the event of an accident. Please carry your ICE card especially when you are attending outdoor activities or Monmouth U3A trips and visits. �

�� Monthly meetings for members are held at Bridges Centre, Drybridge House, Monmouth, NP25 5AS on the 3rd Tuesday of the month 2.30 – 4.00pm.Speakers give presentations on a range of interesting subjects (see below),and afterwards members enjoy friendly socialising over tea and biscuits. There is a New Member’s Table where people who have joined recently will be welcomed.
