1st Burrough Green Brownies - Brownies do it all… for girls aged seven to ten

1st Burrough Green Brownies have weekly meetings in Brinkley that are full of many different activities,

usually ones that the Brownies have suggested themselves. Arts and crafts, energetic games and Brownie interest badges. We recently had great fun completing a special badge ’25 Not Out’. We’re now working on a badge that’s been specially produced to celebrate the Royal Wedding, along with a badge called ‘Going Green’ for which we’re all learning about how to look after the environment around us.

In April we had a fantastic weekend at the Jarman Centre in Newmarket, a purpose-built Holiday House on a secure campsite which is owned by Girlguiding Cambridgeshire East.

Brownie Holiday is one of the most exciting events for Brownies, our theme was ‘BUGS’ and there was a full programme of indoor and outdoor activities. We held a ‘BUG BALL’ party and had great fun following an insect trail in the grounds. We did lots of ‘Wildlife Watching’ at various times of the day and the girls were amazed at the different birds and animals that they spotted and heard at dawn & dusk. We made lots of BUG related crafts and bird feeders, the list is almost endless! We also enjoyed a supervised Archery session, and the use of trampolines.

Now we are looking forward to a District Campfire Event, where girls from all sections of Linton District, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section, all plan to join together around a camp fire to enjoy singing their favourite campfire songs - and a hot dog.

On Wed 6th July we have another popular annual District event, the ‘Strawberry Evening’, a family event held

in the grounds of Dr Bertam’s house in the High Street in Linton, there will be strawberries and ice cream, lots of side shows, a raffle & a cake stall.

In July we are also looking forward to having a go at Canoeing, the girls are very excited at the prospect of having fun together on the River Cam in canoes with qualified coaches. For more information about Brownies please contact Margaret Whalley 01638 716939

Les & Anne's Nature Notes Wonderful Wagtails Now I'm sure you’re all familiar with what a Pied Wagtail looks like. These delightful birds are very common and many are seen around the village all year round. Their constantly wagging tail and striking black and white plumage make them one of the easiest birds to identify, but are you aware of the other Wagtails and what they look like? Well, showing in the middle photo is a Grey Wagtail, larger than the Pied with a longer tail, their name refers to the grey upper parts, but they have a yellow chest and rump, also a very obvious black bib below the beak. We have been lucky over the last few years

to have at least one pair here on the Stour during March and April. Now just to confuse you there is also the Yellow Wagtail, but if you are lucky enough to see one you will know why it's called that. The male is a bright vivid yellow, with olive green back as can be seen in the photo below (sorry the best one I have as yet). The Yellow Wagtail was a bird I had never seen in my life until this Easter when Anne and I spent the holiday at friends in Hunstanton. We visited Titchwell RSPB

reserve and were fortunate to see two, however, imagine our surprise when after the hols we were walking down Water Lane and sitting on the wires was, yes you guessed, a Yellow Wagtail. How typical, you wait a lifetime to see one then three turn up in as many days! There are other variations of all of the above but the subtle differences are too complicated to go into here. It's great to have the summer visitors back; the first swallow in the village was on 8th April followed on the 10th by House Martins. Then Swifts arrived on 7th May which helped boost my year total to 143 different species.

St Edmundsbury Rural South - Safer Neighbourhood Report (Extract)

During April Officers were deployed countrywide to increase speed checks and enforcement during a week long European enforcement campaign, lead by Tispol – the European Traffic Police Network in an effort to clampdown on speeding. Separate speed checks were carried out in our area, which resulted in ten fixed penalty notices being issued, six drivers cautioned and two drivers summoned to appear in Court. In 2010 twenty people died on Suffolk’s roads and in almost a third of these incidents speeding was identified as a contributory factor. Now that we are enjoying lighter evenings Suffolk police are reminding us to be extra vigilant in securing property at all times; keeping windows and doors of houses, sheds and garages locked and secure. Targeted items tend to be smaller things such as cameras, laptops and mobile phones from houses, or tools, cycles and lawnmowers from sheds or garages. They also recommend not leaving BBQs, garden furniture, toys and bicycles out overnight. Friends, family and neighbours are also being asked to help support and keep an eye on elderly and/or the vulnerable to prevent them from becoming victims of distraction burglars or rogue traders.

There are over 200 pages with information on the last 5,000 years of village life, making it one of the most comprehensive websites around. In addition there are links to other useful sites. If you have anything that could be featured on the site then I’d love to hear from you.

Latest News: Through a wonderful thing called RSS feeds we have the latest news from Haverhill & Newmarket newspapers; the most recent questions asked of parliament by our local MP; local weather & traffic reports; houses for sale; planning applications; national news & sport and of course the Bradley Bugle. Historical Information: We have all census information going back to 1841; maps showing where people came from or moved to; data on the scheduled ancient monuments and the listed buildings as well as a complete record of the gravestones, Romanesque architecture of the church and the owners of the village pubs. Photos: There are hundreds of photos of the village on the site: from the new village sign through to the Italian POW’s sent to East Green during WWII and on to the villagers gathered outside the post office in the Victorian era; there are close up photos, aerial photos, landscape photos and photos from village events (remember the 1977 Silver Jubilee anyone?) and even all the kneelers in the church Interactive elements: There are interactive maps, on-line games; videos from around the village as well as the ability to see what Great Bradley looks like from space, what space looks like from Great Bradley; what the phase of the moon is right now; which mobile phone company provides the best reception and from which countries people have logged on from. Village People: We have a record of some of the people who lived here; those who ran the shops; famous people (and animals!) linked to the village as well as family history ties to Great Bradley across the world. There is even a recording of the accent of one of the villagers made by the British Museum as part of a Millennium project. Village Places: You can have a guided tour round the village and even up the church tower without ever leaving your seat through the 3-D maps, photo tours and videos. There are old photos that show how the village has changed (or not) and you can find out about the history of some of the key buildings. So what’s next? Well, over to you: We can always make use of information, pictures, anecdotes, maps, videos, family history snippets etc etc that you may wish to share. It may be about you, your family or your house – it doesn’t have to be about the whole village. Bunbury Cricket Four years ago I offered to help to run a BBQ for an event in a nearby village. My friend Fiona said it was a cricket match held in the grounds of her father’s home. I even took my own small gas BBQ and roped in the help of a friend. Little did I know that we would be serving bacon baps to famous cricketers and celebrities. The event is now in its 6th year. The setting is picturesque, beside the church in the village of Carlton. People arrive early to get the best viewing place and to picnic. Fiona's father, Robin Wylie passionately prepares the pitch, spending hours mowing the grass. His wife, Willow, family members and friends all help with the preparation. It brings the good out in you wanting to help, and friends of friends generously give, and not just of their time. Homemade jams and cakes are given, the bakery gives 500 baps and hundreds of sausages are given along with the BBQ. Chimneys, the caterers, give the players a jolly good lunch. Excell, the local Sawston based IT and Communications company give good financial support. Along with traditional Afternoon Tea, Pimms, beer and soft drinks are served. There are craft stalls, children’s entertainment and live music. The event takes place on Sunday 26th June at The Old Rectory, Carlton and the gates open at 10.30am. Parking is on the adjacent field. The money raised will go towards the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) unit at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge and to the English Schools Cricket Association. The celebrity cricket team is organised by David English from Bunbury Cricket Club. Harry Judd, the drummer from pop band McFly will captain the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) team. It's a very enjoyable and rewarding day and whatever the weather it carries on. So very British! Please come along.

• With the departure of John Eley the church is now without a rector, but is nevertheless

maintaining a schedule of services. They have a sizeable quota to pay every year to the

Diocese but so far they have managed it. The fete is a tremendous help, raising over £2,000

each year. This year it will be on Sunday 10 July with a steel band, vintage cars and fresh bread

as well as all the usual attractions, again in the lovely garden at Great Bradley Hall thanks to the

generous permission of the Ryders. Note the date!

• The Bowls Club is fully functional but would like more members, especially men.

• The Art Group continues to flourish under the expert tuition of local artist Jan Couling. Sessions

have finished for this year but will restart in September, hopefully back at the Village Hall.

• Scottish Country Dancing has been meeting in Thurlow but can’t wait to get back into the

Village Hall in September.

• WEA courses on Wednesday mornings have included:

o Social History of Britain, 1800 – 1914, led by Simon Doney

o History of the English Language Part 1, with by Rosemary Williams

Upcoming courses planned are: o Sept 2011, “Shakespeare’s Heritage in Music – his influence on composers” led by

What variety!

• the Litter Pick was attended by 22 volunteers to whom many thanks, as well as the police and 3

press photographers! This is a great service to the village. It also stimulated St. Edmundsbury to

come and collect the rubbish and clear up Bradley Hill.

• The Parish Council’s Village Face Lift project had resulted in daffodils being planted on the

triangle at the top of Hall Road thanks to Charles Ryder and to the tidying up and planting of the

verge opposite Bluebell Cottage thanks to Ron and Cathy Bell. This project will continue with

the new plans for the Village Garden and Millennium Oak area. New ideas are always welcome!

• The possibility of having a grit spreader and a team of volunteers to grit pavements in the

village for the safety of villagers in icy weather was discussed. People thought the idea good,

but we will need more volunteers if this is to be realised.

Everyone who contributes to or organises village events and activities were thanked, many by name, as well as all those who attend and support such events. We are lucky to live in such a thriving village. This is only a summary of the most important matters from the meeting. Annual Village Meeting on 18 May We held a successful Annual Village Meeting in St. Mary’s Church on 18 May with over 40 people attending. This is a great chance to hear what’s going on in the village and for all village organisations to tell people a bit about what they have been doing and their plans for the future. It’s also an opportunity to ask for the village’s views as a guide to future plans and projects. The overall impression from the meeting was of a lively and vibrant community with an amazing range of activities, formal and informal, going on. Highlights of the proceedings were:

• An update from Essex and Suffolk Water and Farrans of their progress on the pipeline and their

plans for its completion by around August. They showed some interesting aerial photos of the

pipeline being constructed. Charles Ryder reported that coordinating the pipeline project had

taken much time with regular progress meetings every week, but that overall the contractors

had been cooperative and the project had gone well. Note that Hall Road will be closed for up to

5 days in June or July while they install the pipeline across the road.

• Local bus services. We heard that the Suffolk Link Demand Responsive Transport system

introduced a year ago had been a great success. A number of attendees expressed

disappointment that Suffolk Link was no longer offering a service to Haverhill, since ABC had

introduced a three-times-a-day scheduled bus service. If you have views on this, you may

• The rejuvenated Neighbourhood Watch organisation is up and running with coordinators in

place for all areas apart from East Green (volunteer needed – talk to Sandra Dolby!). Crime

prevention leaflets have been delivered to most households, articles written for the Bugle and

the NW team is in regular contact with the police. Crime in the parish is down to 3 for last year

compared to 14 for the year before, perhaps not all due to the efforts of the NW!

• Due to great efforts by the County, Borough and Parish councils, council tax in 2011-12 has

barely increased from the previous year despite the reduction in government grants and other

financial pressures.

• There is a plan afoot to investigate the feasibility of turning off streetlights between say midnight

and 5.30am. This would save energy and reduce light pollution of the night sky.

• The Parish Council’s achievements during the past year and plans for the coming year were

presented, along with an analysis of how the council spends the money collected via Council

Tax. Key projects for the coming year are a new footpath map and information board, re-

landscaping of the Village Garden and Millennium Oak area, a taller post for the village sign,

possibly a lower basketball hoop or similar in the play area for younger children, another

fireworks and bonfire night on 4 or 5 November (the vast majority at the meeting preferred

Saturday 5th), and to look into the possibility of an event for the Diamond Jubilee around 4 June

2012.

• Edward Fletcher updated us on progress of the repairs and reinstatement of the Village Hall

after December’s disastrous flood. It was good to hear that the new floor will be solid maple, as

close a match to the original as possible, paid for by the insurance, and that the committee

hope to reopen the hall in September with a party event. Also the heating system is to be

improved. The committee was thanked for their work in running the hall and particularly for their

efforts in organising the repairs at this difficult time.

• Community Speedwatch is active in the village with good support from volunteers. Four speed

checks have taken place over the past year and 20 drivers have been “clocked”.

Save the date! The annual Great Bradley Church Fete - Sunday 10 July 2011

Grand Summer Draw Following the success of last year’s Grand Draw at the Fete, Charles Ryder is once again most generously providing three prizes of produce originating on Great Bradley Estate. The First Prize is a hamper which includes beef, venison, logs, bread vouchers and fruit, and there are Second and Third Prizes. Every household in the village will get two books of tickets with this month’s Bugle. Tickets are 20p each or £1 for a book of five. Please fill in the stubs and return them with the money in the envelope provided on or before 6 July to: Rose Cottage, Evergreen Lane, or 20 Fox Green or Fox Corner, Hall Road. Further books of tickets will of course be available on request and everyone is welcome to take part. The draw will take place at the Fete at 4pm. Lots of attractions at this year’s Fete This year’s Fete looks set to be better than ever with all the usual stalls and games plus a steel band, vintage cars, giant rabbits and magnificent prizes. There will once again be a Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show in the church and with the warm and early spring we are anticipating a good display. The next Fete planning meeting will be on Monday 6 June, 10 am at Rose Cottage, Evergreen Lane.
