Day 1 Monday 6th September Melbourne, Sheffield, Wilmot, Stanley

We fly into Launceston and are met by our driver Kerry Towns from McDermott’s Coaches. Today we will make our way up to the North West town of Stanley. Firstly a refreshment stop at the historical town of Evandale before heading off to the fabulous Scottish Scone and Highlander shop in Sheffield. There will be time to stroll around this picturesque town known as the ‘Town of Murals’. Travelling on past majestic Mt Roland, we will continue on to the little town of Wilmot which boasts the home of the first G.J. Coles store. Further on up the road you will enjoy the unique and entertaining mail boxes which decorate the roadside. Heading north we follow the coast until we arrive in Stanley. Tonight’s accommodations are historical B&B’s. D

Day 2 Tuesday 7th September Stanley, Cradle MountainStanley is a totally restored Bass Strait fishing village with quaint little shops and tiny, brightly painted cottages neatly terraced on the lower slopes of an extinct volcano called The Nut. Breathe the cleanest air in the world (proved by recent scientific measurements at nearby Cape Grim). We will visit The Nut with an optional ride to the top on the chairlift before visiting historic Highfield House. Heading off from Stanley we make a stop at Dip Falls as we travel to Cradle Mountain, a World Heritage area. Overnight at the beautiful Cradle Mountain Chateau. B D

Day 3 Wednesday 8th September Cradle Mountain, Zeehan, Strahan. This morning we travel to Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake returning to the Chateau for lunch. We then head off down the West Coast with a stop at the marvellous town of Zeehan. Here you can explore the grandiose buildings of Victorian days which are being restored as they were when it was a major mining town for gold, silver, lead and tin. The Gaiety Theatre which hosted Enrico Caruso and Lola Montez is well worth a visit as is the Museum. Zeehan’s most distinguished daughter is Eileen Joyce the internationally acclaimed pianist who also performed in her home theatre. This promises to be a most enjoyable time of exploring Zeehan’s former glory days. We then head on to Strahan situated on Macquarie Harbour and known as the ‘jewel of the North West, capital of the wilderness.’ Our ac-commodation tonight are 9 historic fishermen’s cottages. These are quaint, individual, fully restored 4 star cottages situated right on the waterfront. You will need to book early to reserve a cottage. Otherwise we have additional rooms available at Waterfront Terrace next door. Dinner is at View 42 Restaurant which overlooks Strahan. Tonight you have the option of staying in or having fellowship with local VillageChristians at the Anglican Church. Overnight at Strahan Village. B D

Day 4 Thursday 9th September Strahan, West Coast Railway, StrahanToday we will take one of the world’s great railway journeys. This railway was built over 100 years ago. You will marvel at the tenacity and skill of the original builders, and experience the authentically recreated trestle bridges and ‘Abt’ rack and pinion system for the steep grades. The West Coast Railway crosses the wild King River and climbs through sheer sided rain forested gorges on its 35 kilometre journey. Stories of the railway are told by local guides and lunch is provided on board. You’ll have some free time in Stanley upon our return, perhaps to browse some local shops or galleries. Maybe you’d like to see the local production of ‘The Ship That Never Was’. The play is about the escape of the last 10 convicts on Sarah Island and it is sure to bring a chuckle and thoroughly entertain. Tonight your dinner destination is you own choice. Hamer’s Hotel is highly recommended or perhaps you would prefer to sample local seafood. Overnight at Strahan Village. B L

Day 5 Friday 10th SeptemberStrahan, Gordon River Cruise, Queenstown.Today’s adventure is on the world renowned Gordon River Cruise. After boarding the Lady Jayne catamaran you will enjoy premium window seating as we take a 5 hour, 40 kilometre journey. Macquarie Harbour is six times bigger than Sydney Harbour. We travel to Hell’s Gate, the harbour entrance to the great Southern Ocean and then onto Sarah Island. You can go ashore and view the ruins of the worst and most forgotten of Australia’s Penal Settlements and see the site of what was briefly Australia’s largest shipyard, the take off point for one of the most amazing escape stories you’ll ever hear. A wonderful buffet lunch will be enjoyed during the cruise. Upon our arrival back in Strahan we’ll be met by our coach heading for Queenstown for our overnight accommodation. B L D

Day 6 Saturday 11th September Queenstown, Derwent Bridge, Lakes District, PoatinaQueenstown is a mining relic of a different kind. Its forests are gone, the hill sides of famous Mt. Lyell bare and carved into geometrical forms. They say, “Only in Queenstown can you see and live in a lunar landscape”’. After a brief tour around this amazing town we head east through Derwent Bridge, stopping at ‘The Wall in the Wilderness’, Lake St Clair National Park and Bronte Park before turning off to head into Tasmania’s beautiful lakes district. Tonight we will stay at Poatina Village which is situated on the edge of Tasmania’s breathtaking wilderness and is framed by the majestic Great Western Tiers. The village of Poatina was purchased by Fusion in 1995 from the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania. It is now the World Headquarters for this Christian Youth and Community Organization. Upon arrival we will be joined by a Fusion representative and taken for a tour of the town. Tonight we will stay at the Poatina Motel and dine at their Mountain View Restaurant. This will be a great way to finish our tour with a special get-together tonight. The locals have been invited to celebrate with us. B D

Day 7 Sunday 12th September. Poatina, Longford, Launceston. This morning you will have the option of attending church or having some free time to look around the town. We will lunch at the Mountain View Restaurant before heading off on our final afternoon tour. Kerry will show us many of the local sights before we finally arrive at Launceston airport for our late afternoon flight home. B L
