John decided to go down first with a rope tiedaround his waist and followed by Lightning while the

George found a way to save their friends but Alandisagreed. They quarreled.
Meatys action provoked another display of Alans
temper. They lost the only big electric lamp of Alans father.

Reaction and Analysis
1. SimilePg 1: He sat on the top of the rock like Napoleon
on St. Helena, lonely and bored.
Pg 53
: The sides of the cavern caught the sound, beat it like a redhot iron until it became hard and
dangerous, and then flung it up for the third time,
reinforced by a cluster of echoes, towards the roof.
Pg 122: Alan too was rigid standing there like aking robbed of his crown.

2. Hyperbolical
Pg 16: The effect on Alan was spectacular. At first helistened with amused tolerance but as his
imagination caught fire he grew more and more
restless until at last he could contain himself nolonger.
Pg 69: it is the darkness that comes down upon the
brain, stops the breath in our bodies, and freezes our
blood in terror.

3. Metaphor
Pg 22: Hes got a lot of sisters who keep himwrapped in cotton wool or try to it.
Pg 23: .take a look at that museum
Pg 26: But he knew that the pocker-faced Georgewas not an easy book to read by so acute a person as
his aunt Mary..
Pg 130: Minutes passed and they seemed like hours, for the explorerss hearts were eager to get on and
were impatient of this snails progress.

4. Personification
Pg 27: at that moment a gust of wind beat back from
the hills and threw a scarf of mist in front of the
rocks.
Pg 28: it was certainly safe from observation, for
now the bracken was dancing and heaving in alldirections, like a corn field in July.
Pg 41: the slanting sunlight was dazzlingly bright in
their eyes and every tree and bush stood haloed withnimbus of fire that danced with morning joy.
Pg 96: He stared at it, fascinated, his mind hungry
with excitement.
