THIS textbook provides a thorough review of the current diagnostic and manipulation techniquescomprising in vitro fertilization (IVF), with contributions from more than 180 internationalauthors and authorities in the field of assisted reproductive technology. The aim of the editors isto provide an exhaustive overview of the requirements for developing and running an IVFlaboratory.
The book is divided into 13 individual sections with 75 total chapters. The text starts with ahistorical review of the beginnings of IVF in 1978. The following chapters provide a review ofassisted reproductive technology equipment and laboratory requirements. The focus then tran-sitions to the techniques for egg and sperm selection, processing, cryopreservation and use. Thetechniques of micromanipulation for intracytoplasmic sperm injection, as well as embryo selec-tion, transfer and storage are reviewed. The stringent regulatory aspects assisted reproductivetechnology laboratories face are also addressed in a systematic fashion. In the final sectionseveral special topics are presented, including nuclear and cytoplasmic transfer and molecularbiochemistry.
The focus of this textbook is more toward the reproductive endocrinologist, embryologist andresearch scientist involved in the field of IVF. Clinicians and scientists seeking a thoroughcompendium on IVF will be pleased to obtain this book for their library. Male infertilityspecialists interested in the inner workings of IVF will also find this text to be a useful resource.However, it will be overwhelming and beyond the scope of practice for most urologists.
