Shalom! We are so excited to welcome you to Book It To Shabbat with PJ Library at Ramah Darom. This retreat offers you the opportunity to connect with your family, play in the mountains, meet new friends and experience a magical Ramah Darom Shabbat. This Program Guide has everything you need to know to make the most of this Shabbaton. Please take time to read through it and bring it along with you wherever you go. We strive to make this experience the best it can be for you and your family. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us – we’re always happy to answer your questions!

Hello! We are so excited to spend this weekend at Book It To Shabbat with you and Ramah Darom! Now in our 6th year, Book It To Shabbat connects old and new friends and

invites families to hang out with your favorite PJ Library stories and characters.

PJ Library Atlanta sends over 5,000 books to Atlanta families, and we are still growing! Plus, books are just the start! We support families’ Jewish journeys through a variety of programming throughout the year. You can find powerful PJ Library programs regularly in Brookhaven, Dunwoody, North Fulton and Smyrna with our PJ Connectors and around the community, in partnership with many of the amazing Jewish organizations in Atlanta.

B’ruchim Habaim, Welcome to Ramah Darom!

1. Check-In: All visitors must check in at the Welcome Center upon arrival. At the Welcome Center, visitors will receive a Program Guide and any additional welcome materials.

2. Vehicles: The speed limit on campus is 5mph. Please park only in approved parking locations. Once you have parked near your housing location, we ask you leave your vehicle parked for the duration of the retreat. Guests are not permitted to drive through campus.

3. Valuables: Ramah Darom is not responsible for any missing or lost items. If you are uncomfortable leaving valuables in your room, please leave them locked in your car (at your own risk).

4. Phone & WiFi: Retreats are a great time to disconnect from devices to enhance our connection with others, and we encourage you to “unplug”. Wireless internet service is available throughout the facility via RetreatGuestWIFI.

If you are having any issues connecting to the internet, please call the customer support line at 1.800.257.6290 (no calling card required).

5. Medical & Emergencies: For minor medical issues, first aid kits are available at the Welcome Center reception desk, in the Main Dining Room/Chadar Ochel, the Marcus Lodge Hotel community room (ground floor), the Mountainside Hotel kitchenette (lower level) and the Lakeside Hotel sitting room (bottom floor). In the event of an emergency, call 911 (or 7-911 from any landline on campus). Be prepared to state the nature of the problem and your location: 70 Darom Lane, Clayton, Georgia 30525. Please also dial 9300 internally or 706.782.9300 to reach our receptionist who will help notify a staff member of the situation.

6. Food: We are an AKC-Certified kosher campus. Please help us maintain our kashrut. All your meals, snacks and beverages are provided. Outside food is not allowed in the Dining Room. All special dietary food needs will be served from just inside the prep area of the kitchen.

7. Meal Times: We encourage you to use mealtimes as a way to get to know new friends. Please sit at tables in the Dining Room and wait until we have said a communal blessing before entering the buffet. There are always people around to answer your questions, but here are a few guidelines:

• Washing stations are located at each side of the Main Dining Room/Chadar Ochel

• Bring plates/cups/utensils to the bussing station and help to clear tables after each meal

• The meal concludes with announcements and blessings

• Playroom for ages 2-7 and PJ Our Way Hangout will open 30 minutes after the start of lunch and dinner

8. Candles: We will provide tea lights for Shabbat candle lighting in the Dining Room. Our Program Guide will include candle lighting times. Please DO NOT light candles in your room!

9. T’fillot & Shabbat: During Shabbat t’fillot (prayer services), everyone is encouraged to wear kippot and tallit if it is their practice. Shabbat is a very special time of the week for our community. Out of respect for this value and our community, we ask that guests refrain from using electronics in public spaces during Shabbat. For Shabbat we recommend bringing dressier attire.

10. Smoking, Illegal Substances and Firearms: Firearms, illegal substances and related paraphernalia are not permitted on campus. Smoking is not allowed inside any building. There is a designated smoking area on the back porch outside of the Mountainside Dining Hall and in the Welcome Center parking lot. A fee will be assessed to rooms or areas showing evidence of smoking or smoke damage.

• If a member of the Ramah Darom staff is nearby, please ask them to contact the front desk.

• Stay with the injured person until help arrives. Try to calm, reassure and stabilize the person. Never move an injured person with a suspected neck or back injury.

• When the ambulance arrives at the scene, summarize the situation and answer questions.

SEVERE WEATHERThunder and/or Lightning:• Gather your family/group and move to a safe area

(large indoor facility, bunk porch or common room) until the weather has passed.

Tornado Warning:• Head immediately to one of the following designated

emergency locations: Welcome Center lobby, Marcus Lodge, Mountainside Hotel, Lower level of the Levine Center, Common room of bunks 1, 2, 31, or 32.

• When at location, stay away from windows.• Stay at designated emergency location until the “all clear”

personal property.• IMMEDIATELY DIAL 9300 ON ANY CAMPUS PHONE OR

• If a phone is not accessible, sound the closest fire alarm.• If a campus-wide fire alarm is sounded, all guests should

proceed immediately to the Kikar (field in front of the Levine Center/Dining Hall/Chadar Ochel) and remain there until the “all clear” signal has been given over the emergency speakers.

• If the fire occurs on or near the Kikar, all guests should proceed to the Beit Am (covered auditorium/basketball court).

ACTIVE SHOOTER• EVACUATE if at all possible, leaving the area by the quickest

route available. If necessary, leave the campus grounds. Leave your belongings behind.

• Call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so.• If you are not able to evacuate, HIDE OUT in an area out of

the active shooter’s view. Block entry to your hiding place. If possible, lock the door. Silence your cell phone (including vibrate mode) and remain quiet.

• TAKE ACTION only as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger. Attempt to incapacitate the shooter. Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter.

• When law enforcement arrives, remain calm and follow the officers’ instructions. Immediately raise hands and spread fingers. Keep your hands visible at all times. Avoid quick movements toward officers whenever possible.

Ramah Darom has developed comprehensive safety and security protocols in consultation with the Rabun County Sheriff’s department and the Department of Homeland Security. Highlighted below are key elements of our protocols. We ask all guests to review this document at the beginning of your stay.

Every building has an emergency exit plan posted and is equipped with fire extinguishers. PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF EMERGENCY EXITS WHENEVER YOU ENTER A BUILDING. Note that the Sheriff’s department has an on-site officer present at our Clayton campus throughout the Retreat.
