The Book at a GlanceWhat do you mean you got fired again? The question was a fair one, and much to my dismay, one that was heard too many times. The next question was even worse, but I knew it was coming – what happened this time?

I don’t know that I’ve actually seen the face of a deer in the headlights, but with a perplexed expression rendering me incapable of answering that simple question, I may very well have looked like one. The more I tried, the more I realized that I didn’t have the slightest idea what the answer might be.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Sobriety, an education, various licenses and certifications – in my mind it wasn’t a matter of whether or not I would ascend the ladder, rather how high I would go. As it turned out, I moved along much quicker than I had anticipated, I just didn’t expect it to be in the wrong direction. Forty-two years of drinking without ever losing a job, followed by being fired with regularity in my nine years of sobriety didn’t make any sense – but I had to try and find a reason. What I stumbled upon was something far more valuable.

Still shaking my head a day later and wondering when things started to go so horribly wrong, like a bolt of lightning it hit me – I’m less employable sober, than I ever was while I was drunk. Considering the drastic difference between those two lifestyles, it almost defied all odds. For as long as I can remember, I was allergic to alcohol. Whenever I drank I seemed to break out in spots; hospital wards, police cruisers, unfamiliar floors.

DADDY … I miss you

The time of your departure, Your calling home Continues to expand, to grow And to sometimes fade away. But Dad, I know that you know that your Time spent with me, With us, was worth it.

Your job, your mission was accomplished And how can I say thanks to you For the years. You took the time, Made the sacrifice, made the journey To be there for me.

I miss you, Daddy, I love you And sometimes wish you were here, But God saw it fit to take you home To be with Him in His heavenly kingdom. I take this short moment, to once again Uncover and to release from within my heart, A joy, a happiness, a peace, a hope, a tear, My love for all those precious moments we shared.

They were precious and I was glad That I had the opportunity to be with you… Through the pain, through the fear, through the troubles of this life You were there.

Now in my heart remains the memory, The joy of those pleasurable moments we had… I miss you, Dad, I love you dearly Take care and I hope to see you again.

By night, the glory of light is cherishedAs we seek every meansTo restore its passing, nature’s wonder. The sun has taken his own wayAnd has left us for a whileBut leaves behind a brother and a host of friendsTheir reign unmatched, far less than that of the sunBut soon this glorious light will returnIf the moment still remains under God’s command. By night, the darkness reigns

And it’s then that we are most susceptibleTo the fears and unseen dangersThat stalk through the blindness of the night.By Night—are your cares left in the darkness?By Night—is your life surrounded by the dark fear?By Night—there is a light that can guide you

Unlock the door and let the Light shine in.

Whoosh! The waves crash against the rocksAt the foot of the hill

Creating a continuous tune of whooshIn its crescendo form.

The wind in its unseen serenityAccompanies the whoosh with a wooo…Blending and orchestrating these natural tunesNot fully understood by man.

How rugged the surface of the sea looksAs my eyes engulf its vast body

It seems so incongruous that withinThe beauty of natural tunes the rugged

Path of the gruesome waves contrasts.

A seagull skims the waves in search of a final mealOne wonders if she will ever appreciate

Such a sacrifice, but it’s either her food and the wavesOr nothing but the bellowing stomachs she has to feed. The sky is slowly darkening and soon all will be overFor our eyes may not beholdThe splendor of the sea.

Will she ever go to sleep?Only the music will tell.

Tomorrow, if it comes,I shall return to the splendor of the sea.

Tips for Writing Your Own PoetryWriting your own poems can begin today; however, it starts with your getting a hold of your own “poetry” pen and paper. Use this book as your starting point on the journey to producing your first book of poetry. We have reserved a few pages in this book for you. Don’t forget to copyright all of your work.

1. Listen to Life

It is life that brings out the reality of experience and expression. From the insignificant to the significant, life is always filled with words that need to be expressed. Listen to Life.

2. Write from Your Heart

The heart is the centre of the being. It cannot be hidden. It cannot be deceived. It feels and knows; it is the part that really listens to life.

3. Reflect on Your Thoughts

Through the stages of listening to life and writing from the heart, it is time to reflect on your thoughts. It is here that you delve deeper into the hidden meaning of your reality. Reflections allow you to create an association and relation with the words that just transpired from your fingers or your lips.

4. Copyright

These are your words. Protect them. As insignificant as it may seem to you, it will be significant to someone else. Copyright gives you the exclusive right to publish, print and perform your work. Don’t leave home without it.

Finally, keep it simple. Write from your heart, not from your head. Write with passion and not for fashion. It is the heart that speaks and so will it listen.

A mind focused on failure

has already failed.

By Faith Not Sight

Sometimes I’m sad, I know not whyMy heart is sore distressed;

It seems the burdens of this worldHave settled on my heart.

And yet I know … I know that GodWho doeth all things right

Will lead me thus to understandTo walk by FAITH … not SIGHT.

And though I may not see the wayHe’s planned for me to go,The way seems dark to meBut oh, I’m sure He knows!

Today He guides my feeble stepTomorrow’s in His right …

He has asked me to never fear …But walk by FAITH … not SIGHT.

Some day the mists will roll away,The sun will shine again.

I’ll see the beauty in the flowers,I’ll hear the bird’s refrain,

And then I’ll know my Father’s handHas led the way to light

Because I placed my hand in HisAnd walked by FAITH … not SIGHT.1

Elton Trueblood

“r aBBi simlai in the third century noted that Moses gave us 365 prohibitions and 248 posi-tive commands. David in psalm 15 reduced them to eleven: isaiah – in 33:14, 15 – made them six:

Micah 6:8 binds them into three: and habakkuk reduces them all to one, namely – ‘The just shall live by faith.’”6 as the prophet, habakkuk, sought god concerning the judgment

that was to come upon the sinful southern kingdom of Judah by a more sinful nation, namely Babylon, god replied: “Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith” (habakkuk 2:4).

Who are “the Just” and how did they come into that standing? simply speaking, “the Just” are

those who have been “justified.” of course there are various meanings of the words “just” and “justified.” The Merriam-Webster’s collegiate Dictionary, eleventh edition, defines “just” variously as: “having a basis in

or conforming to fact or reason: reasonable (a just but not a generous decision)” and as “acting or being in conformity with what is morally upright or good (a just war).” The same source defines “justified” as “to prove or show to be just, right, or reasonable,” as “to show to have had a sufficient legal reason,” and

in the letter to the galatians, paul through the inspiration of the holy spirit, refutes the erroneous

teachings of the legalist and the sepa-ratist actions of peter to drive home the principle, “The just shall live by faith.” he clearly presents the truths that the galatians had received the spirit by faith and not by the law and

they have begun their new life in christ through the spirit by faith and not by the law. also, he continued that the purpose of the law was not to make one righteous or to be a way to salvation but to demon-strate man’s hopeless and helpless sinfulness in order that he might be saved through his faith in christ.

...The just shall live by faith.

Treat Your Marriage Like a Business M

A Marriage Book with a DifferenceSuccessful business is all about working together to create trusting relationships in order to drive robust and profitable bottom lines. The same factor is true in marriage. Building and maintaining a trusting relationship is also the keystone for a happy and successful marriage. Treat Your Marriage Like a Business is an interactive coaching toolbox of relationship information, personal assessments, checklists, questions and Coachable Moments based on the Married Love Plan. The tools are designed to help you identify behaviors that you need to stop, begin, or continue in order to create and maintain a robust, intimate and emotionally connected lifelong trusting relationship.

Married Love has three critical components: Commitment, Connection and Chemistry. Commitment provides the foundation of Married Love. When couples consistently treat their spouse in ways that makes them feel valued, affirmed and honored, friendship is the natural result. This is connection. Sexual chemistry is built on the basis of your commitment to each other and naturally flows out the emotional connection of friendship.

Mike Danchak, founder of The Cutting Edge, is a popular counselor and sought after speaker specializing in professional development and marriage coaching. As a licensed counselor, Mike is passionate about healthy marriages and has utilized his widespread experience and training to develop the Married Love Plan, an interactive coaching approach. Mike and his wife Sharon reside in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

48 Treat Your Marriage Like a Business 49What’s Love Got to Do with It?

I get all kinds of different answers. Love is:

Sex Friendship Compassion Sympathy Romance A sensitive attitude Family Having kids

So, what do you think? It is no wonder people are generally confused about the

meaning of love. It is one of the most overused, under-defined words in the English language. And popular culture gives us so many mixed messages — in movies, TV shows, romance novels or advertising. Love can be defined as just about anything.

Defining love in this culture is like trying to see air or hear thoughts.

A DEFINITION OF LOVE

Love is most often thought of as an emotional experience or intense feelings we simply fall into when the time is right.

It’s something we have little or no conscious power over — it just happens. We dream of falling in love; it requires no effort on our part.

The truth is, “falling in love” is primarily a combination of physical appearance and body chemistry.

When I’ve asked couples, “What initially attracted you to your spouse?” I’ve received all kinds of answers.

“He/she was cute.” “He had a silly looking car.” “I liked the way she smiled.” “He looked cute in his bellman’s uniform.” “He was funny … handsome.”

5What’s Love Got To Do With It?

Love is a look, a smile, brief as an instant, long as eternity, a spark engendered by a

reaching out, a touch of hands, an intuitionthat knows how to heal a hurt, and how to build a world.

For love’s sake only, cherishing each other, lovers move freely within a circle, that

defines their being, shapes what they become, and thus they are fulfilled each in the other.

– Author Unknown

There is a lot of confusion as to what love means.

I love football. I love cheesecake. I love my kids. I love … you.

I often ask the following question in seminars: “How would you define love?” I then have participants complete this sentence:

Love is _______________________________________________________________________________ .

Now you complete the sentence: Love is ___________________________________________________________________ .

60 Treat Your Marriage Like a Business 61

6Keeping The Feelings

Of Love Alive

I climbed up the door and opened the stairs, Said my pajamas and put on my prayers,

Then I turned off the bed and crawled into the light, All because you kissed me goodnight!

– Sandy Rolstan (attributed)

Brian and Sammy were scared and broken hearted. They expected that their marriage that began with “enchanted evening feelings” would continue as a “until death do us part” relation-ship. Yet after just fourteen months, all that had changed. Brian put it bluntly, “Mike, we like one another but we no longer love one another. We think we’ve married the wrong person.”

I responded, “You like but no longer love one another? What does that mean to you?”

Sammy quickly jumped in: “Brian is a super guy. He is honest and works hard, but I no longer have the feelings I once had for him. I hate to say it Mike, but I no longer love Brian.”

Brian responded, “As much as I hate to say it, I agree with what Sammy said. I like Sammy, but I’m no longer in love with her! We’ve been married less than two years. We both hate to throw in the towel, but neither of us can stay in a loveless marriage. The feelings we had at the beginning are no longer there. Is there any hope?”

Love never gives up.

Love cares more for others than for self.

Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.

Love doesn’t strut,

Doesn’t have a swelled head,

Doesn’t force itself on others,

Isn’t always “me first,”

Doesn’t fly off the handle,

Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,

Doesn’t revel when others grovel,

Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,

Puts up with anything,

Trusts God always,

Always looks for the best,

Never looks back,

But keeps going to the end.

– 1 Corinthians 13, The Message

98 Treat Your Marriage Like a Business 99Romance and intimacy: Keeping the Flame in Your marriage

Romance

Romance is an atmosphere where you feel unconditional love, value, and appreciation. Romance is an intense, positive emotion that bonds you to your spouse. Women intuitively know what romance is.

Most guys need some training. Romantic love is an emotion created at least partially as a result

of the way you’re treated. This is the same dynamic we found in our section on Agape Love. Caring love is treating your spouse in a way that shows you understand their intimacy map and their intimacy fuel.

Some people think that romance is easy, that anybody can be romantic with very little work. After all, it works that way in the movies.

That movie scene probably had a crew of more than fifty people, working for days to set the mood for the camera. And if they didn’t get it right the first time, they would just redo every-thing again and again until they did.

The truth is, it isn’t easy – but with some work, you can do it.

Romance is not Event Planning

First begin by thinking of romance not as an event, but as a day-to-day relationship, a friendship with your spouse that continues to grow. It’s asking each other about their day, how a hobby or special project is going, or even just reminiscing together. It’s sharing common interests and just taking the time to enjoy each other’s company.

It’s a joint process. Many times a spouse will try to initiate romance with a surprise

dinner or an unexpected vacation they planned. But then they are disappointed when the event isn’t the dream date or getaway they had imagined. It’s not that the recipient isn’t appreciative of the effort, but what is fun or relaxing for one person may not be for the other.

9Romance and Intimacy: Keeping

the Flame in Your Marriage

“Love and magic have a great deal in common. They enrich the soul, delight the heart.

And they both take practice.” – Nora Roberts

A football player for a Big 12 college was describing his recruit-ment process:

“When they were recruiting me, all the coaches were really nice. And then after I got there, they all suddenly turned really mean. They started yelling at me all the time.”

That’s kind of like marriage. We buy into the myth that we only need romance in order to attract that future spouse. Once we have them, that becomes job is done and we don’t need to keep getting what we already have.

But really, we do. Romance and intimacy are closely related and tie all of the

steps of married love together: forgiveness, a servant’s heart, commitment to the behaviors of love, connectedness as friends, and sexual chemistry. Let’s look at how romance and intimacy can keep enchantment in your marriage.

Two women with very different stories: two

paths, two different ways of making a difference

for the fellow prisoners they left behind.

Their work on behalf of the Prison Fellowship

mission is a symbol of hope. The guilt and

personal doubts they have endured and their

triumphant faith have brought them both to

the same place – to a relationship with God.

However, most of us who live in this neighbour-

hood see our lives as normal. We are busy trying to

keep up financially in a part of the city given over to

low-paying jobs in the manufacturing, service, and

retail sectors. Kids still go to school every day.

Parents still go to work – or spend time looking for

work. In fact, even if your own life is touched by

“Jane-Finch crime,” very few of the people around

you know about it. As far as they are concerned,

you’re just like everyone else: trying to better your ~This story is by the daughter of Vivienne Nash,
