Kiwis To Spend More One in two Kiwis will spend more on travel in 2015 than last year and they’re expected to take more in- ternational trips too, according to TripAdvisor’s latest TripBarometer. The study found 51% of Kiwis are planning to increase their travel budget and will spend an estimated $12,600 on travel this year alone— an increase of 24% on 2014. The average number of international leisure trips planned by Kiwis is set to increase 39%—well ahead of the global average of 15%, with New Zea- landers showing the highest increase along with Turkey and India. The study is based on 44,000 global responses including 2756 from Aus- tralia and New Zealand. JAWS In Whangarei Northland agents are reminded to head to Whangarei’s Forum North to- night for the Jaws Plus roadshow. See the industry diary for details. Kiwi arrivals to Fiji reached record levels in 2014—and Tourism Fiji is overwhelmed by the response from the Kiwi trade as more agents up- skill on Fiji on-line and in person. On the back of a 24% increase in Kiwi arrivals to Fiji last year, and combined with increased air capacity to the island nation and a higher con- sumer profile, Tourism Fiji is expect- ing the momentum to continue from New Zealand. “People are rediscovering Fiji and there’s been so much product de- velopment, and the food and bever- age offering is now significantly improved, which has really reawak- ened the appeal for Fiji,” says Tour- ism Fiji acting chief executive Wayne Deed. The NTO has targeted a 12% increase in New Zealand arrivals this year, on the back of record figures for 2015, and Deed says the trade is key to achieving that goal. The NTO has reported ‘record reg- istrations’ of its upcoming national Bula Marau roadshow which kicks off later this month—with atten- dance for the Auckland event now waitlisted due to the ‘incredible de- mand’, says Deed. “It indicates to us that there’s huge demand from the frontliners to get the latest updates from the industry.” . . . Huge Increase Tourism Fiji has also reported a huge increase in the number of Kiwi agents who have registered for its on-line trade training Matai Pro- gramme. “We’ve seen a 99% increase in new Matai registrations since we launched in Nov last year,” says Deed. In addition, the NTO has identified the need to ensure that wholesale consultants are up to speed with the destination’s evolving product offering, with initiatives including a planned dedicated wholesale famil. “We will continue to work with the trade in terms of upskilling them and profiling new product offerings,” says Deed. . . . Trends While many New Zealanders still opt for the popular Denarau and Mamanuca Island resorts (which will be the focus of the NTO’s upcom- ing roadshow) Deed says anecdotal feedback suggests that an increas- ing number of Kiwis, particularly families, are now heading for the Coral Coast. “The region offers an authentic Fijian experience and the large resorts cater well to families with good kids’ programmes and of- fer good value for money in terms of f&b,” he says. Cyclone Pam UpdateThe Havannah in Vanuatu closed this afternoon, possibly until Sun, and all guests have departed as the island na-tion prepares for Cyclone Pam. Pam has been upgraded to a category four storm and is moving in a south-easterly direction to waters between Vanuatu and Fiji. Heavy rainfall is expected throughout northern Vanu-atu, with flooding and flash flooding expected in low-lying areas.Air Vanuatu says it’s operating as normal today and as a precaution has brought tomorrow’s Port Vila-Sydney flight forward to this evening, with the aircraft to stay in Sydney tonight. The airline expects at this stage that the cyclone will not have an impact on its Sat AKL flight.Agents and wholesalers are asked to note that the Havannah server will not be switched on and the reservation in-terface with OTAs and PacificBedBank will not be functional, so availability will not be accurate. Reservations will return to normal on Mon, when the resort will send out confirmations.

A US law firm is allegedly taking a class action lawsuit against a num-ber of carriers operating on the transpacific route—but Air New Zealand has dismissed the action, saying there was no basis for the claim.US law firms of Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy LLP and Hausfeld, LLP released a statement earlier this week saying settlements had been reached with eight airlines in a class action lawsuit involving the price of airline tickets, and that a lawsuit was continu-ing against five carriers including Air New Zealand. The lawsuit claims that the defendants agreed to fix prices on tickets for transpacific air travel, and as a result, they claim, ticket purchasers may have paid more than was necessary. An NZ spokesperson says the carrier is aware of the lawsuit recently publi-

cised by the USA-based class action lawyers. The proceedings were filed in 2007. “NZ, following a thorough internal investigation, found no basis for the claim which it considers to be entirely opportunistic,” says the airline spokesperson. “Airfares are highly competitive and very transparent to travellers and travel agents due to an efficient, international distribution network.”For details on the class action, see airlinesettlement.com

Uniworld has released the first pic-tures of its new Super Ship S.S. Maria Theresa, which launches later this month, calling the vessel a floating palace. The opulent design aims to transport guests into an 18th-century Baroque castle, offering 64 state-rooms, 10 suites, and a Royal Suite.Throughout the ship royal blue, an-tique golds, shades of white, and soft grey colours that were popular dur-ing the 18th century abound. The Habsburg Salon, where guests can re-lax with a book or enjoy afternoon tea, sports five murals; there’s an on-board authentic Viennese café; and signature

Leopard Bar. There’s also a 10-seat Lipizzan cinema, fitness centre, pool, and spa.The S.S. Maria Theresa will be christened in Amsterdam 26 Mar by Princess Anita von Hohenberg, a direct descendent of Maria The-resa. She will set sail on her inau-gural voyage 28 Mar on Uniworld’s European Jewels voyage from Bu-dapest to Amsterdam, then sail the line’s Tulips & Windmills, Euro-pean Holiday Markets, and Grand Christmas & New Year’s Cruise itin-eraries. Star Wars At SeaThe Disney Fantasy will host a special Star Wars Day at Sea on eight sailings early next year, in-cluding a deck party, character meet-and-greets, themed activi-ties, food and beverage offerings, and special merchandise. There will also be at-sea screenings of Star Wars films and the new animated series Star Wars Rebels. The Star Wars days will be on the cruises sailing on 09 and 23 Jan, 06 and 20 Feb, 05 and 19 Mar, and 02 and 16 Apr 2016. The seven-night itinerary ex Port Canaveral includes Cozumel, Cayman Is-lands and Castaway Cay. For more on Disney, head to the Discover America events later this month. Int ro du c i n g n e w e m i s s i ons standards that would stop ships using high-sulphur fuels in NSW ports from next year will mean the cruise industry suffers, says the Tourism and Transport Fo-rum.The government has announced the plans following concerns that residents of Balmain in Sydney are

being polluted by ships using the White Bay Cruise Ship Terminal. Ships using White Bay use a low-quality fuel with up to 35 times the concentrations of sulphur allowed in North American and European ports, say reports—and as there’s no on-shore power source, they have to keep their engines running as their only source of power while berthed. The TTF says introducing new stan-dards for emissions by mid-2016 doesn’t give the industry enough time to adjust, and low-sulphur fuel is currently unavailable in large quantities in SYD.“Government decisions could put at risk an industry that is supporting 10,500 jobs in NSW and generating economic output of over AUD2.3 billion,” says TTF boss Margy Os-mond.

HAL Alaska VoyagesHolland America Line is making changes to its 2015 Alaska cruise season, including moving ms Noor-dam to the region, positioning ms Statendam exclusively on 14-day itineraries roundtrip from Seattle, and shifting ms Zaandam to Gulf of Alaska itineraries. From May through Sep seven HAL ships will sail a total of 124 Alaska voyages, with highlights including 14- and seven-day roundtrips from Seattle, seven-day Inside Passage cruises roundtrip from Vancouver, and seven-day Glacier Discovery Cruises Between Vancouver and Seward.Three Alaska voyages will feature a ‘Sip and Savour’ cuisine focus; all Glacier Bay cruises will host park rangers; and Land+Sea Journeys will offer more Alaska discoveries. For more details, contact Francis Travel Marketing.
