In troduction - The Need

fo r This Work

Why is it that EFL teachers routinely use songs in their elementary school level teaching but often omit songs in their teenage and adult classes? Many EFL teachers would like to use songs in their classroom teaching more than they currently do but theres a problem. If they use an English language pop or folk song their students wont understand much of it and as an abstract teaching tool it will garner only limited interest and enlightenment. If the teacher takes limited class time to try to explain the meaning of a song, even if that is intended as part of the lesson, some students will still not understand much of the song and even some of the best students in the class are unlikely to understand all of it. If they can un de rstand a song , they will be bette r abl e to appr eciate it and then be mo re willin g to accept it as a learning tool. And they will enjoy singing in class more and, ultimately, enjoy the course more. With the translations contained in this work a teacher can, at any point in the lesson/ presentation, give the students a quick, easy, clear understanding of the song being used, and leave more valuable class time for actually using the song for pronunciation, speaking practice, introducing vocabulary/idioms, or as a cultural introduction, and of course, for singing. When explaining a song would take too much time from the lesson at hand, these translations can get a teacher over that hurdle and move on to better things. Even when leading students through a song's meaning, these translations will serve to fill in the gaps in students' understanding after the oral part of the lesson. Why not use any one of several currently published translated songbooks as found in major bookstores? A research of the literature in bookstores and libraries reveals a focus on pop songs and includes only a few famous folk songs. Po p song s ca n en lighten only abo ut the pop ular cultu re , not the basic, historical cultu re , and the quality of existing song translations varies. Some are only transliterations of the English lyrics rather than translations. Others are not lineby-line translations but only translated summaries of the meanings of the songs. Finally, many errors were found, usually due to fundamental misunderstandings as to

the meaning of the lyrics. High school music and English textbooks were generally better but included only a few "sing-along" songs. This work offers a better alternative, with careful, studious line-by-line written translations of the English pop and folk songs into Korean, checked, doublechecked, and revised, individually and in groups, ranging from top-graded Korean undergraduate students of English to Korean university professors of English.

About the

P roject

The Seoul English Songs Project is a small voluntary group of undergraduate and graduate students and Korean and native English-speaking English teachers currently or formerly of the Seoul campuses of Myongji University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies ("Oedae").

-4 We work together to produce better alternative English teaching materials by adapting and translating English-language materials that were not originally made for teaching English into forms that are meaningful and interesting for the Korean EFL classroom. Most often we work with songs, especially traditional folk songs from the native English-speaking countries, and sometimes with poems and prose that would exemplify the history, culture, and society of those countries.Our work is used solely for educational purposes and shared freely with other English teachers in Korea for that purpose. No money is involved so there is no violation of copyright laws. We are funded by our own membership.

The Transla tion Pr oces sTime was taken to teach each song to an original translator(s) to achieve a thorough understanding of the meaning. The original translation was then passed on to a higher level for review, and then back to the translator(s) again for consideration and revision. Each song has been reviewed in this way at least twice, by different bilingual native speakers of Korean. Finally, a pre-publication review was done to find further room for improvements in Korean reading fluency (the "smoothness" of Korean usage). This exhaustive translation process, accomplished gradually over a long period of time, has reduced any perceived shortcomings in translation to a matter of only subjective opinion. For some English language songs, especially among the folksongs, this work represents what may very well be the first Korean translations ever produced. This will become increasingly probable in future translations of even more obscure English language folksongs.

What is Folk Music?Folk music, in its pure form, is music with a long oral tradition that has no known author. Acoustic music from the 1960s and later is also known as folk music. Webster defines folk music as the "traditional and typically anonymous music that is an expression of the life of the people in a community." Folk music is music that has become part of a people's heritage through oral tradition. Because of its oral tradition folk music is fluid. Variations in both tune and melody developed as music

was passed orally through counties and countries. Folk songs are important both musically and historically as they define some part of a people's experience and become a part of a people's culture. They therefore encompass not only countries (England, Ireland, etc.) but cultures (AfricanAmerican, Native-American, etc.) Traditional music is becoming the preferred term for music which originated in the 15th to 19th centuries. Within the folk music genre there is a distinction between ballads and folk songs. Ballads were longer and related a story, usually one based in the past and carried down by oral tradition. Ballads could be either dramatic or humorous, dealing with the topics of the time. New names and topics often became associated with older ballads. As the saying goes, "ballads are never wrong, sometimes the facts get messed up." Folk songs, on the other hand, were shorter, lyrical and personal.

-5 Folk music is also a current genre of music that includes not only traditional tunes but newly composed tunes. The definition is not a set one and classification of specific musicians and songs is subject to controversy. Musical genre is much more fluid now than in the past, so the lines between folk, country, celtic, and others are often blurred and crossed.

The Song s in This VolumeSpirituals are an integral part of the folk genre of the western world. No collection of folk songs would be balanced or representative without them. This volume contains a variety of some of the most well known spirituals. Spirituals are often thought of as part of the African-American experience, traditionally called negro spirituals, but here they are treated more broadly and inclusively, as any folk song that has as its primary theme a religious message, whether the cultural origin is African or European. Indeed, both the European and African folksong traditions are replete with religious themes and imagery. Spirituals can be thought of as hymns that are sung outside of church. The line between spirituals and hymns is often blurred, and whether a spiritual is sung as part of a church service depends on the tradition of that church.

Using These

Songs in the Classroom

Leading your students in song promotes a bonding within the class that few other classroom activities can match. Korean students who would be too shy to speak up individually in class, especially girls, can raise their voices in song with the rest of the class. Practice in speaking lyrics and singing songs gives students a feeling of proficiency that bolsters their confidence in language acquisition, which in turn better prepares them for acquiring conversational English, to a greater degree than using classroom conversation alone. Grammar chants and made-for-the grammarlesson songs are useful but have none of the social, cultural, or historical appeal of real songs in the target language.

This is a balanced collection with songs varying in length, difficulty, mood, and theme. So, choose accordingly. One use of songs in the classroom is as cloze exercises. Eliminate a few words from the page, scattered loosely throughout the song. Students try to fill-in the missing words as they listen to the song. Or eliminate more words, more closely together. Students then try to fill-in the missing English words using the Korean translation given before hearing the song. Another approach is mutual dictation. Here, eliminate every other line in the song to make an "A" version of the song, then take another complete copy of the same song and eliminate the alternate lines to make a "B" version. Seat pairs of students facing each other, one partner with version "A" and the other version "B" and have them alternately read to each other without seeing each other's paper, taking dictation until both halves of the song are complete. Then check accuracy by

-6 having different students read aloud their written lines in class and/or drill pronunciation of the lyrics with the class in unison. End the exercise by playing the song and then leading them in singing it together.If you'd like a copy of these songs on computer file to facilitate making cloze, mutual dictation, or other kinds of exercises, feel free to contact me at the e-mail address listed below. Your comments and suggestions will be most welcome. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! , !

I once was lost but now I'm found; was blind but now I see. . .

When we've been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun, ,

we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we first begun. .

~~~~~~~~~~~~Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved. , .
Ah, precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed., .
Through many dangers, toils, and snares, we have already come.
Twas grace that brought us safe thus far and grace will lead us home. () .
K eep O n The Sunny Sid e
There's a dark and a troubled side of life, but there's a bright and a sunny side, too. .
Though you meet with the darkness and strife, the sunny side you also may view. .
Refra in: Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side. , .
Keep on the sunny side of life. .
It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way
if we'll keep on the sunny side of life. .
Though the storm and its furies rage today, crushing hope that we cherish so dear,
the cloud and storm will in time pass away and the sun again will shine bright and clear. . .
--Refra in- Let us greet with the song of hope each day, though the moment be cloudy or fair. .
And let us trust in our Savior always. He'll keep us, every one, in His care. . .
