Background Information
• An island located off the shores of Nigeria (SE)– Population is about 270,000; approx 250,000 locals and approx.
20,000 foreigners– covers a land area of about 27 km²
• Host to oil & gas companies– Shell, ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, and Nigerian Liquefied Natural
Gas (NLNG) • Majority of the workforce are employed on the oil and gas
production plants• Major export point for oil & gas
– Much of the oil & gas produced onshore is piped to Bonny for export.

Problem Statement
• In the midst of great employment opportunities created within oil & gas industries, the host community - Bonny Island, still has an unemployment rate which continues to grow due to lack of competent indigenous work force within the community, resulting to:– Youth Unrest – Volatile work environment and – Security issues.

The Initiative
• The Bonny Vocational Centre is an NLNG/Bonny Kingdom partnership project designed to: – Promote vocational/entrepreneurial skills
acquisition, and self-reliance in youths in Bonny community.
– Meet the needs and aspirations of the community– Awards an International Technical Vocation Level 3
Certificate of London City and Guilds.

• Monitoring after graduation, to ensure that: – starter packs are put into proper use and – mentoring services are provided where necessary to assist
trainees overcome challenges they might encounter in the course of their business
– Declining unemployment rate for indigenes– Feedback from employees / clients
