East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to the report of a house fire at approximately 6 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, firefight-ers discovered the Mountain View Drive home was filled with smoke and a woman was trapped inside on the second f loor. She was rescued and treated for smoke inhalation before being released at the scene.

Responding crews included four fire engines, a ladder truck and two medic units. One crew located and extinguished the fire while a second crew rescued the woman from a

The Sumner School District had two levies on the ballot of the special election on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

On the night of the elec-tion, both levies were pass-ing.

Proposition No. 1 with 4,784 yes votes and Proposition No. 2 with

4,548.“The Sumner School

District is pleased that our local community has renewed its commitment to the students in our dis-trict by passing our levy measures,” Superintendent Sara Johnson said. “With the current shortfall in funding at the state level, our local community sup-port remains paramount, enabling us to continue to

provide excellent instruc-tion, every day, in every classroom, for every stu-dent for the upcoming 2015-18 school years.”

The levies present-ed to the voters were Proposition No. 1: Replacement Educational Programs, Maintenance and Operations Levy and Proposition 2: Instructional Technology Capital Levy.

Proposition 1 is a pro-posed levy that would replace the Sumner School District’s current levy that was approved in 2010 that is expiring at the end of 2014.

It is a four year levy that pays for items not fund-ed or not fully funded by the state, according to a Sumner School District press release.

Some of those items include additional staff for instruction, supervision and safety; teacher train-ing and development and

building maintenance, materials and supplies along with others.

Proposition No. 1 is not a new tax, this levy will only replace an expiring one.

The second levy on this ballot, Proposition No. 2, is a four year levy that would pay for improve-ments to classroom tech-nology. This levy would be a new tax for residents.

The Sumner Spartans girls bas-ketball hosted the White River Hornets in the final game of the subdistricts tournament on Friday, Feb. 14.

And for only the second time all season, the Spartans lost. The Hornets won a close game 56-54.

Sumner trailed for most of the game. The Spartans made a run at the end of the first half to bring them within three, 29-26.

With 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, Sumner took the lead of White River 41-39. But the Hornets regained the lead enter-ing the fourth quarter.

White River never looked back, the Hornets managed to hold onto its lead.

This game was deciding what seed Sumner and White River would enter districts. With the loss, the Spartans go on to dis-tricts as the No. 2 seed.

The Spartans will play an unde-cided at the time of press oppo-nent at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Bellarmine Prep High School.

The subdistricts started on Tuesday, Feb. 11 as the Sumner Spartans faced the Evergreen

Wolverines.Sumner won 64-29.Sumner scored the first points

of the game and Evergreen kept it close until late in the second quarter.

The Wolverines took the lead with 1:55 to go in the first 13-12 but the Spartans got it back on a three from junior Anna Hurd.

Sumner never looked back, the girls led 29-19 at the half.

Evergreen would score 10 more points in the second half while

Sumner added 35 to its score.The second game of the tourna-

ment came on Thursday, Feb. 13 as Sumner beat Franklin Pierce 51-26.

Entering districts the girls are 21-2 overall.

Sumner BoysThe Sumner boys also host-

ed the subdistricts tournament which started on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

The boys fought hard but came

up short, losing its first game of the tournament 64-57 to the Renton Indians.

The Spartans trailed by five at the half, 28-23.

The boys were down by as much as 10 in the second half and got as close as two but it wasn’t enough to take the lead away from the Indians.

Sumner continued the tourna-ment on Thursday against the Foster Bulldogs.

The Spartans won 63-51.There was no third game for

the Sumner boys, per a coin flip the Spartans are ranked sixth entering districts.

The first game of the 2A dis-tricts tournament for the boys was at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17 at Foss High School where they played the Lindbergh Eagles.

girls basketball team went 1-1 in the 3A subdistricts tournament.

The Panthers lost the first round on Wednesday, Feb. 12 to the Kennedy Catholic Lancers 49-40.

The tournament continued on Friday, Feb. 14 for the Panthers as the girls faced off against the Enumclaw Hornets.

The Panthers beat the Hornets 45-39 and will enter districts the third seed.

Bonney Lake played Kelso in the first round of districts at 2:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17 at Clover Park High School.

The Bonney Lake wres-tling team f lexed it skill and muscle at the district tournament.

The Panthers took five district weight class titles Saturday at the district match. The days events were held at the Bonney Lake High School.

Carson Corbale, 106 pounds, beat Jake Treece of Enumclaw 7-3 from the championship.

At 132 Colton Tracy beat Zach Berry from Decatur 14-3. Tracy pinned his previous two opponents to get into the champion-ship round.

Caid Caveness, 145, beat Dennis Good from Decatur

At 152 Cayle Williams pinned Christian Arag in 2 minutes, 50 seconds.

Chili Sabin, 182, pinned Wyley Stweart from Enumclaw in 57 second.

The White River High boys took fourth-place honors during Saturday’s district wrestling tourna-ment at Orting.

Leading the way for the Hornets were three individual champions. Mason Hamilton captured the title at 106 pounds, defeating teammate Alex Armstrong in the finals; Trevor Kurtz was the champion at 138; and Austin Ross battled his way to the top at 195.

Paced by Hannah Lewandowski’s individu-al championship, White River High’s girls battled their way to a fourth-place finish during Saturday’s Region II wrestling meet.

Staged at Steilacoom High, the event brought together 20 teams from the Class 4A, 3A and 2A ranks. In the final tally, White River trailed only Lakes, Puyallup and Emerald Ridge.

The only Hornet to advance to the finals, Lewandowski made the most of her opportunity. Competing in the 190-pound class, she pinned

her Peninsula Seahawk opponent at the 5:32 mark to earn her title.

Kiley McCain, from Sumner, finished fourth all around with a score of 34.475. She took sec-ond on bars with 8.4 and fourth on the vault with 8.750.

McCain will be com-peting for the all around along with Hailey Taylor and Nikole Otto, both from Bonney Lake.

Taylor took second on the f loor with 9.4 and Otto was seventh on the bars with 7.55.

In the vault event at state will be Lauren Water, Bonney Lake, and Sierra Tinsely, Sumner.

Sleep apnea is a debilitat-ing and life-shortening ail-ment that affects millions of people across the globe, many of whom do not know they have this poten-tially dangerous condition. Understanding sleep apnea and its symptoms and risk factors is imperative for

men and women who feel they have or may someday have sleep apnea.

What is sleep apnea?The word “apnea” is

Greek and means “without breath.” Sleep apnea occurs involuntarily and unex-pectedly while a person is asleep. It causes a person to

stop breathing repeatedly while sleeping -- sometimes hundreds of times a night -- estimates the American Sleep Apnea Association. These moments of breath-lessness can last a minute or longer and may not trig-ger a full awakening in a person.

There are different types of sleep apnea. The main types are obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep

apnea. Obstructive apnea is more common and occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax during sleep and inhibit air flow. With central sleep apnea, a person’s brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that con-trol breathing. Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of both obstructive and cen-tral sleep apnea.

During an episode of

sleep apnea, the body may rouse itself partially to resume breathing but not enough to fully awaken the person. As a result, sleep may be very fragmented and sufferers could feel extremely tired during the day and not understand why.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Individuals who may be experiencing sleep apnea may have the following symptoms, according to The Mayo Clinic:

• excessive daytime sleepiness

• loud snoring• awakening with a dry

mouth or sore throat• headaches in the morn-

Meeting in the middle with a VolksmarchWhen it comes to

exercise, my wife would describe me as a fanatic; I go to the gym several times a week and run or bicycle on the weekends. My idea of a fun weekend is to run a half-marathon or ride my bike to Crystal Mountain.

My wife, Cathy, enjoys physical activity and hik-ing. She sees the value of exercise but often works late in her second-grade classroom. Cathy’s idea of a fun weekend is to snowshoe in Leavenworth or go for a wine walk in Enumclaw.

As we transition to empty nesters, and with Stephanie’s encourage-

ment, we have had the opportunity to explore different weekend out-door activities that allow us to meet in the middle and enjoy exercising together. We like hiking and decided to try a form of urban hiking known as Volksmarching. Volksmarches are orga-nized, noncompetitive weekend walks that are typically 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) or 10 kilometers (6.2 miles in length). The walks can be staffed or self-guid-ed.

We tried a Volksmarch last month on South Hill in Puyallup. We were greeted by volunteers at a sign-up

who were friendly and pas-sionate about their sport. Many of them have partici-pated in events across the United States and interna-tionally. We had the option to walk for free or pay $5 for our walk to be recorded and to choose the shorter or longer walk.

Cathy and I were among veteran and newbie walk-

ers. We didn’t feel espe-cially young or old in comparison and wished we had a dog to bring as many of the events are dog friendly, and as was this one. The walks are casual and have plenty of opportunities to meet new people. Our walk, the short

course, started off through a shopping area which allowed us to stroll past a few interesting shops. The route continued along sidewalks for the first half with the second half walk-ing on the shoulder of the road. We walked facing traffic which was less dis-concerting when cars were

approaching. As we made the final

turns to complete the walk we could see a timed finish line similar to competitive running events, and found ourselves speeding up for a spectacular photo finish. At the end we were greet-ed by the event hosts who applauded our effort and stamped our Volksmarch log book.

We are now members of the Evergreen State Volkssport Association and are on their mailing list. It is our goal to partici-pate in several more events this year. The next nearby staffed event is on March 8 and 9 at Northwest Trek

in Eatonville. More infor-mation can be found at www.evsa.org. They also have a self-guided route for Enumclaw with maps available at the Park Center Motel.

Jan. 31Hit and Run: A driver rear ended the vehicle in front of him on South Prairie Road at about 7:15 a.m. He fled the scene but was located at a school in the area. The responding officer cited him for hit and run and speed too fast for conditions, due to the wet road.

Feb. 3 Burglary: Police were noti-fied three homes under con-struction were broken into. Wiring, plumbing valves and light fixtures were among items stolen from the properties. No suspect infor-mation was available at the time of report.

Feb. 5 Fraud: A person reported unauthorized transactions on her debit card. She was issued a case number and told to contact police if fur-ther activity is uncovered. Possible suspects were iden-tified, but not yet verified at the time of report.

Attempted Burglary: A resident of 188th Avenue East reported damage to her home’s front door, which indicated pry marks. She didn’t believe access was gained and nothing was sto-len. An officer checked the residence and cleared the scene. There was no suspect information available.

Feb. 6Shoplifting: A state Route 410 grocery store reported a juvenile male in custody for shoplifting a bottle of alco-hol. The store decided not to press charges after speaking

with the suspect’s parent, but he was trespassed from all locations for one year.

Feb. 7Abandoned Vehicle: An abandoned vehicle was parked on 65th Street East for over a month. The owner was previously contacted by police and was advised again that the vehicle would be impounded if she didn’t remove it. Cascade Towing took possession of the vehi-cle upon the owner’s inabil-ity to do so.

Shoplifting: A suspect was seen concealing items in a bag before continuing to the cash register at a SR 410 retail store. He paid for items in his cart, but not the ones he had concealed. He was arrested, trespassed from the location and issued a citation for theft in the third degree.

Feb. 9 Footprints: Officers responded to a burglary alarm on Myers Road East. They were able to follow two sets of footprints in the snow, but did not locate the suspects. Nothing appeared to be stolen during the inci-dent.

Attempted Burglary: A resident of 210th Avenue East reported an attempt-ed burglary had possibly occurred about 10 minutes after he left the residence. He received a phone call from his son, who said he heard the doorbell and banging outside the home. Footprints and tire marks were seen leading around the house, but no evidence of an attempt to enter. No suspect information was available.

Feb. 10 Recovered Property: A stolen dog kennel was recov-

ered in the WSU forest, where it was reportedly used as shelter by three homeless subjects. One of the subjects was arrested for possession of three warrants and a sec-ond subject was arrested on charges in an unrelated case. The kennel was reportedly destroyed, but the owner declined to press charges.

Domestic Violence: Officers responded to a domestic violence report, in which the male subject reportedly pushed the female subject during an argu-ment. He was booked into Enumclaw jail for assault in the fourth degree and issued a no contact order.

Warrant: A patrol offi-cer recognized a juvenile pedestrian and performed a records check, which revealed an arrest warrant from the Pierce County Sheriff ’s Office. He was

transported to Remann Hall after his identity and war-rant were confirmed.

Expired Tabs: An offi-cer stopped a vehicle with expired tabs. The driver ini-tially provided a false iden-tity due to an arrest warrant she was trying to conceal. She was arrested for the war-rant and issued citations for driving with a suspended license and making false or misleading statements to law enforcement. She was also issued infractions for expired tabs and failure to provide proof of insurance.

Feb. 11 Front Porch Theft: A res-ident of Church Lake Drive reported a set of tires was delivered to his residence, but that someone stole them before he returned home. No suspect information was available at the time of report.

The Bonney Lake Police Guild would like to say “thank you” to the commu-nity for supporting the “We Got It From Here” benefit dinner & auction Jan. 11.

Every penny raised went directly to an educational trust fund for the three chil-dren of former Bonney Lake police officer Brian Kelly, who passed away last year due to cancer. The event sold out and raised nearly $21,000.

I have always loved books and the art of storytell-ing.

My dad read to my sisters and I every night when we were kids and my mom always took us to the library and let us check out as many books as we wanted. I read every Nancy Drew book, as well as the entire Trixie Belden series, and an abundance

of books about horses. As a teenager I checked out — and read — every book the library had about Walt Disney.

I learned of Goodreads last spring, which has continued to feed my love of books.

If you aren’t familiar with Goodreads, it’s essen-tially a social media site based entirely around the written word. Like Pinterest but only for books. A way to organize the chaos.

The site lets you create bookshelves and organize books, track what you’ve read or what you want to read.

You can also connect with friends and see what is on their bookshelves or browse lists of books. You get the idea.

The definition of a plutocrat is “a person who derives power from wealth.” Warren Buffet fits in that category. Buffet said in 2011 about the U.S. government: “We are still a democracy, but we have moved in my lifetime towards a plutocracy. We do not have a plutocracy, I want to emphasize that, but the distribution of wealth and the influence of wealth have moved in that direction.”

These are troubling words from Buffett, but he should know. Ironically, though, he, like other plutocrats in their own areas, has gained greatly from government help in order to create monopolies.

In 2009, his company, Berkshire Hathaway, purchased 77 percent of the shares of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for $44 billion, according to David Cay Johnston in his best seller “The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use Plain English to Rob You Blind.” (You can see BNSF railcars in Auburn.)

Had you purchased $1 worth of stocks in BNSF just after Buffett bought the lion’s share, the value would have grown to $3.75 by 2012, much better than the stock market a year after the 2008 economic crash.

By understanding how he did it, we can consider what it says about Buffett, and plutocrats as a group.

BNSF is a near monopoly, control-ling 49 percent of rail traffic in the West. For farmers who need to ship their products to the cities, it’s the cheapest and virtually only means they have to do so. Truck hauling is far too expensive compared to trains. Farmers are considered “cap-tive shippers.”

Forty-four percent of rail freight in 2012 was coal. According to Johnston, the best and most sulfur-free coal comes from Wyoming. The federal government limits coal pro-duction to cut down on air pollution, so most of the U.S. coal comes from Wyoming. Therefore the price is

higher. This was a factor in Buffett’s purchase of BNSF.

Just before Buffet bought BNSF, the Surface Transportation Board, which regulates the industry, made an announcement that BNSF’s rates were too low – meaning that they could be raised. The STB tends to have more empathy for the railroads than it has for rail customers. That is the current attitude of both state and the federal regulatory agencies toward large corporations, accord-ing to Johnston.

Buffett, in buying the BNSF, now had two positive ways to make a profit: the opportunity to raise rail rates and a near monopoly on ship-ping coal. Buffett is known to prefer “market monopolies.” Competition, as Buffet says, “tends to eat up any excess profits.” This is the antithesis of capitalism, which is supposed to thrive on competition.

Buffet also owns an electric utility in Oregon, PacifiCorp, which uses coal to generate electricity. So not only does he control a railroad vir-tual monopoly, he also owns another government-regulated monopoly, a

The recent snow storms and subfreezing tempera-tures in the aftermath of Seahawk celebrations mask the fact that the spring pruning season will soon arrive.

February through April is the traditional time for pruning fruit trees. Winter is also a good time to work on ornamental trees because it is easier to determine what needs to be pruned before new leaves begin to grow.

There are three major items to consider when planning your spring tree work.

First, fruit trees will benefit from pruning to enhance fruit production.

Second, pruning orna-mental trees is completely different from pruning fruit trees.

Third, if hiring someone to do the work, choose a reputable tree service or a professional arborist. Unfortunately, there are plenty of well-meaning folks that do not possess the knowledge of proper prun-ing techniques.

Fruit TreesIf they have

been pruned on a regular basis, they have devel-oped numerous water sprouts. As a general rule, one-third or more can be

thinned out. Most of the remaining sprouts should be shortened to 4 to 10 inches.

Careful pruning will help control the size of a tree and keep the fruit more reachable.

Treat Ornamental Trees Gently

Severe topping or aggres-

sive pruning of any orna-mental tree should be avoided to maintain its natural shape. Not only is it ugly, but the resulting water sprouts are a survival response as a tree attempts to replenish the lost food-manufacturing branches and leaves.

These fast growing sprouts can grow up to 5 feet or more a year. This may require frequent work by maintenance crews that could have been avoided by proper thinning and prun-ing.

Early spring means dwarf daf-fodils, crocus, hellebores, for-sythia and even some flowering plum trees are edging onto the stage as the big show of petal-performers unfolds.

Take a moment to take in this budding introduction, then get to work on early-spring garden chores. Cut back ornamental grasses that have browned and dried during the winter. If you chop these dormant grasses to the ground now – before they sprout – you won’t have to worry about disturbing the fresh new growth later on.

While you are out there clean-ing up, be sure to rake away any faded hosta foliage before the slug eggs hatch. Start raking the debris and loose grass from your lawn and get your mowing machine tuned up and sharpened – soon you’ll be ready to mow.

Q. I love to eat fresh aspar-agus. How easy is this

vegetable to grow here? I have

done well with other vegetables in my raised bed garden beds. M., Olympia

A. Be patient and you’ll be harvesting your own

asparagus in two or three years. Asparagus is a perennial which means it will return year after year unlike most vegetables that are annuals and need replant-ing each spring. February is the time to buy asparagus roots from a garden center or nursery. This crop prefers full sun but will adapt to part sun as long as you make sure the soil is fer-tile and well drained. Your raised beds will be ideal. First, layer

the top of your soil with at least six inches of compost and work this into the top 24 inches of soil. Next dig a ditch 18 inches deep and lay the brown roots called “asparagus crowns” into the bot-tom of this trench, spacing them 2 feet apart. Cover the roots with 4 inches of soil and wait a month. When you see green shoots emerging, add more soil and then continue adding soil as the shoots grow taller. Once the trench is filled, add a mulch and keep the asparagus bed weeded – asparagus is one plant that hates competition. You won’t be able to harvest the new shoots of asparagus this year but your second spring will provide the first of many future harvests. Asparagus is easy to grow when you keep the area weed-free and well-mulched.

Q. I bought some primroses from the grocery store.

Planted them into the ground and now they have almost disap-

peared! First the flowers went and now the leaves are disappear-ing. What is eating them? T.Y., Puyallup

A. My best guess is that those primrose thieves are

slimy slugs. Look for traces of slime and scalloped bite marks on the leaves and any f lower petals. Primroses with bright colors and large blooms are the common polyantha varieties that slugs love. The more expen-sive English type primroses have smaller but more slug-resistant blooms and foliage. You find these hardier English primroses at nurseries rather than grocery stores. A pet-safe slug bait like Worry Free will protect not just primroses but any plant with tender spring growth. Baiting now will help control future generations of slugs in your gar-den. A practical way to enjoy the early-blooming and inexpensive primroses is to leave them in their plastic nursery pots and

display them in porch or patio pots using moss or bark chips to hide the plastic containers. Then you can transplant these spring bloomers into the gar-den when the summer annuals become available in May.

ing plums during the January 2012 ice storm. The resulting masses of sprouts will provide chal-lenges for the next few years. Proper thinning can help renovate many of these trees.

Responsible tree ser-vices and certified arbor-ists will discourage tree topping. The key to suc-cessful ornamental prun-ing is to have the final result look as if very little has been done to a tree.

Overgrown TreesIf a tree is too wide or

tall for its space, there are at least two options:

1 – Carefully select some of the longer, unsight ly branches. Either cut them back to where they join a larger branch or the main trunk or lightly trim them back

to a shorter length.2 – Remove the tree

and plant one that will grow to fill, not over-crowd, a chosen space. This is much preferable to doing a severe prun-ing job. Be aware that the height estimates on nursery labels are often conservative.

Do the Right ThingI often ask a home-

owner what he or she wants a tree to look like. Sometimes I have to explain why their request may not be practical or healthy for a tree and we will dis-cuss some options. This should be the approach of any knowledgeable and responsible tree pruner.

Sometimes a home-owner will tell me to “do what I think needs to be done.” This can be a dangerous instruction to give because some tree

pruners do not know the correct way to treat orna-mental trees. The results may be painful to look at. And it might be even more painful to write a check.

I always insist that a homeowner be present during a job. That way he or she can immediately approve or express con-cerns of the work in prog-ress and be available to ask or answer questions.

power utility. According to Oregon law, utilities were given the right in 2011 to pocket state taxes, something that Buffett’s lobbyists were able to lobby into law through the Oregon legislature. So, Oregon taxpayers unknowingly pay a state tax that goes directly into the pock-ets of PacifiCorp.

Buffet raised railroad rates, which in turn raised utility rates in Oregon. This meant he benefited from rising prices from both companies, and the consumers were held captive to those rising costs.

Railroad executives used to complain about employee “featherbedding” by unions who did not allow railroads to lay off excess workers. “Now we have, by

government policy, what might be called ‘capital featherbedding’. But you won’t hear the railroad executives gripe about that,” Johnston writes.

Part of the problem with the nation today is that plutocrats have been able to control government through lobbying of Congress and by financing political campaigns, thus buying influence. This, in turn, increases profits for the super wealthy and creates monopolies.

The consumer experiences rising pric-es and reduced buying power while the superrich like Buffett and other pluto-crats get even richer. Buffett’s giving away of part of his wealth to noble causes con-ceals the money-grubbing plutocrat he really is. We are truly living in a second Gilded Age – bright and shiny gold on the outside, but of low quality on the inside.

Sumner students host benefit night

Fate has a way of throw-ing curve balls from time to time – life-threatening illness, house fires and other catastrophes occur daily. For local commu-nity member and soccer coach Darren Painter, sev-eral of those events col-lided into an approximate three-year time frame, culminating with a cancer diagnosis last June. For eight years, the annual Sumner High School ASB Benefit Night Talent Show and Dinner Auction has donated 100 percent of its proceeds to support and uplift a local family in the midst of struggle. Painter is the recipient this year.

Doctors told Painter he has a lethal form of mela-noma skin cancer, with about a 10 to 15 percent chance of survival. The family has faced other challenges in the recent past, including a house fire during the 2011 holi-day season that nearly destroyed their home. And in 2010, a heart con-dition caused Painter’s wife Kerry to fight for her life. She survived and now stands by her husband as he fights for his.

The Painter fam-ily includes five children. Painter is currently unem-ployed but he receives supplemental income from his passion; paint-ing. He also spends his free time as a Mt. Rainier soccer club girls coach.

“Open your heart, and

listen,” Painter said in a press release about the three-night fundraiser, which begins with a din-ner auction at 6 p.m., Feb. 19 in the Sumner High School Commons. Local Johnny Cash trib-ute band, Folsom Prism, will provide the evening’s opening entertainment. Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at Sumner High School.

The event is best described as an annual highlight for the commu-nity, with entertainment provided from within the community, and the pro-ceeds of which directly benefit a member of the community, said Folsom Prism front man Corey Wilkins.

“It’s an honor to be invited to play and it’s great to have the oppor-tunity to give back to the community. One of my good friends from high school, Julie Nordyke Moltke, was a past recipi-ent and greatly benefited from this event. It’s spe-cial to be a part of some-thing that made a direct contribution to a person-al friend, who has since passed away,” Wilkins said.

Two talent shows will also be held at 7 p.m., Feb. 20 and 21 in the Sumner High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $8 per person and may be purchased at the door. Both evenings will include acts performed by students and other com-munity members.

This is the first time vot-ers have seen proposition 2 on the ballot.

Results are certified by the Canvassing Board Feb. 25.

The woman awoke to the smell of smoke and crashing sounds from the first f loor, according to East Pierce Battalion Chief Rick Goetz.

“She did all the right things,” Goetz said. “She felt the bedroom door and found it was hot, so she didn’t open it. She called 911 and advised the dis-patcher precisely where she was and then went to the window to wait for the firefighters. That’s exactly what we teach people to do.”

not enough time to read all the good books. Every time I finish a book, I add at least three more. It’s basically fighting a losing battle.

See, it started off with a shelf for books about journalism – the history, the current state of things, anthologies of great works of journalism. Then came the fiction and nonfiction and Disney — yes, I have a Disney bookshelf — and all kinds of other shelves.

Oy with the poodles already.

I’m also a frequent flyer over at the library. I’ve been known to check out way more books in a month than I could ever possibly read. It’s the “my eyes are bigger than my stomach” thing, but in this case it’s that my curiosity is bigger than my available amounts of time.

Last summer Kris Hill laughed with (at?) me when I would run over to the library to pick up an-other stack of journalism books and come troop-ing back in with them. But then she made the problem worse by loaning

me a book on breaking the rules of grammar, so there’s that.

Currently on my Kindle, I’m reading “The Everything Store” – yes, note the irony there. After that I have “I am Malala” waiting for me, not to mention the two books by Rich Sterns I have from the library. And I’m half-way through “Jane Eyre,” but since I own that it’s lower on the priority list.

Side note, I thought “Jane Eyre” was a nice

little story, and then all of the sudden the manor was on fire and the guy was pretending to be a fortune teller and I was all, ‘what just happened?’ So yeah, I’ll have to get back to that.

Technically, accord-ing to Goodreads, I’m still reading “Reporting Vietnam” — an anthol-ogy of reporting from during the Vietnam War. I was reading it over the summer but ran out of renewals at the library

and had to finally return it. Someday I’ll be able to click “completed.”

and A.W. Tozer have also made my reading list re-cently, as have a smatter-ing of things that fit into the dystopian lit genre.

I highly recommend “The Book Thief ” for those who haven’t read it. It’s creative and beauti-ful and sad. And so good. And endlessly quotable.

a line, whereas my own is a circle, and I have the endless ability to be in the right place at the right time. The consequence of this is that I’m always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both.”

See? The book is nar-rated by Death — who is talking in the aforemen-tioned quote — which at first sounds rather mor-bid, but it’s a fascinating

perspective and was one of the things that drew me into the book.

And all of this doesn’t even begin to touch on movies and the annual rush to get caught up be-fore the Oscars, which is really the only awards show I watch, so I figure I should at least know something about some of the nominees.

So much story, so little time. But it’s fun, and I keep trying to catch up anyway.

has sleep apnea by recog-nizing abrupt awakenings from shortness of breath or intermittent pauses in his or her breathing during sleep. Also, it is important to note that snoring may not be a sign of sleep apnea, but very often loud snor-ing punctuated by periods

of silence is a pretty good indicator of apnea.

Risk FactorsMany people experience

sleep apnea, though it may be more pronounced in certain groups of people. Those who are overweight

may have obstructions to breathing. People with a thick neck also may have a narrower airway. Genetics also may play a role in a narrow airway in the throat or enlarged adenoids or tonsils that contribute to airway obstruction.

Men are twice as like-ly to have sleep apnea as women, and men who are older than age 60 have an increased risk over young-er men.

Smokers are three times more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea over people who have never smoked. That’s because, according to the Mayo Clinic, inf lamma-tion and mucus retention may occur in the upper airway.

People who naturally have difficulty breathing through the nose may be at a higher risk for sleep apnea.

TreatmentsAfter being tested for

sleep apnea, which usually involves some sort of sleep test, whether at home or a nocturnal polysonmogra-phy that measures heart, lung and brain activity is conducted at a sleep center, a doctor may refer patients to an ear, nose and throat doctor if there is a physi-cal obstruction causing the apnea. Recommendations may include losing weight, quitting smoking and other lifestyle changes if these are thought to be the

primary causes behind the apnea.

Therapies for obstruc-tive sleep apnea can include continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, which uses a machine to deliver continuous air pressure into the nose and mouth to keep air passages open. There are other air pressure devices as well. Surgery, including implants or cre-ating a new air passageway via a tracheostomy, may be necessary in severe cases that don’t respond to other treatments.

Sleep apnea is not a con-dition to take lightly. It affects millions of people and requires action to pre-vent other maladies result-ing from lack of oxygen to the body.

Several new studies focusing on heart health confirm that following certain dietary guidelines is crucial for preventing heart disease, one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Many, if not most, of these deaths could be avoided with appropriate diet and life-style changes.

um (salt) and added sugars in processed and packaged foods are believed to be among the main culprits for the dramatic rise of the disease over the past few decades.

High sodium levels in the blood stream are a cause for high blood pres-

sure, which, in turn, is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Decreasing sodium intake (www.cdc.gov/features/dssodium/) could prevent thousands of deaths annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Consuming sugary foods and beverages also apparently adds to the risk of heart disease. A recent study (www.archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1819573) on the health effects of added sugars in sodas, cakes, candy, and other sweet-ened foods found that participants were more

likely to develop heart disease as their percentage of total calo-rie intake from sugars went up. In fact, those whose diet included more than 25 percent from added sugars almost

tripled their risk.According to the CDC,

most of us consume way too much of both ingre-dients.

On average, Americans have a daily sodium intake of about 3,400 mg, sig-nificantly above the rec-ommended limit of 2,300 mg, and more than twice the amount considered adequate, which is about 1,500 mg.

An estimated 16 to 20 percent of total daily calories in the typical American diet come from added sugars (www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db87.htm), according to the CDC. Curbing con-

sumption could reduce calorie intake from nutri-tionally deficient sources and help prevent diseas-es associated with over-weight and obesity, includ-ing heart disease.

Unfortunately, trying to make such reductions may prove difficult for consum-ers because the sources of sodium and sugars are not always easily identifiable. Even items that don’t taste especially salty or sweet may still have high sodium and/or sugar contents.

Nutrition experts rec-ommend to carefully read food labels. If the sodium amount per serving is 5 percent daily value or less, it is a low-sodium product. Everything over 20 per-cent daily value is consid-ered high.

Because sugars are not required nutrients, there are no official lim-its or guidelines avail-able. The Institute of Medicine (www.iom.edu/re p or t s /2 011/ le a d i n g-he a l t h-i nd ic ator s -for-

healthy-people-2020/table.aspx) (IOM) recommends that consumption should not exceed 25 percent of daily calories, an amount some experts (www.food-p ol i t i c s . c om /2 013/0 2 /lets-ask-marion-whats-the-recommended-daily-allowance-of-sugar/) still consider excessively high.

The best way to lower the risk of heart disease may be making gradual improvements to your meal plans by adding more fruits, vegetables and other fresh ingredients, while limiting or elimi-nating processed items as much as possible.

A not her recent study (www.amjmed.c o m / a r t i c l e / S 0 0 0 2 -9343%2813%2901111-X/abstract) on the subject revealed that a so-called “whole diet approach” that focuses on increased consumption of healthful foods can be more effective than, for example, being too concerned with fat con-tent. Diet plans like DASH

(Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) or the Mediterranean-style diet seem especially helpful in this regard.

Like with most other diet and lifestyle-relat-ed health problems, it is unlikely that we will alter the current trends anytime soon. But better education and willingness to over-come ingrained preferenc-es could eventually move us in the right direction.
